View Full Version : Okay, let's get real: Spinks was robbed!

Dick Flaherty is a fine ref who got it right. 117-111 Spinks was perfect.
Forget what compubox says, it's run by 76 year old women clicking a button.
Spinks was rarely hit clean, he was controlling the pace of the fight, and he was landing flush left crosses on Taylor at will.
Taylor is usually an aggressive, wild swinging cowboy in there, but Spinks jinxed his ass. Spinks should be given an immediate rematch. :nono:
Of course the HBO house fighter gets the nod.

yeah. Spinks should've been more aggressive, though, like PBF. now PBF knows how to put on a show.

PBF was hit cleanly by Dela Joto way more than Spinks was in his fight.
Spinks was hit clean MAYBE 6-8 times. Even a replay of this apparently "big left hook" that Lampley called out didn't even hit Spinks, it barely brushed his cheek.
Taylor beat Spinks by throwing 30 punches a round. This is a travesty.

i'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not in your claims, but believe it or not, i agree with you that a case could be made that Spinks won the fight.
now, we certainly wouldn't hear about it from Lederman or Lampley, or even Merchant (although Merchant did say in the 7th round that Spinks deserved credit for his skills only to call for him to retire by the time the fight ended). but round by round? Spinks probably did land more punches in more rounds than Taylor did.

Bama I like you, but I think you should rethink this issue. Stinks lost pretty clearly. The numbers don't support you position and Taylor did land 40% of his punches amazing for hitting a running target. As a judge, I would give Taylor more credit for one or 2 blows then 12 of Stinks'.

Ike, you know we're cool, and I wouldn't throw acid in your face like I would most of the shitheads who post here, but Taylor is a fucking bum. I was laughing my ass off when Manny Steward was about to whip his ass in between the 11th and 12th rounds. That would've been more fun than watching Jermaine trying to waltz with Corey for 12 rounds.

Double L, you've always been a guy who has had a realistic take and viewpoint on boxing issues. I respect your opinion.
Round by round, Spinks clearly controlled each round except the 12th. I gave that round clearly to Taylor because Spinks, like most fans who can score a fight, had himself clearly ahead and he was just protecting that lead.

A 7 rounds to 5 or 6-5-1 round even win for Spinks is certainly arguable. Even in the rounds he didn't land, he seemed to control Taylor with his jab and movement. JT was lost in there the whole night.

That's true, sometimes Jer-bum was able to land 3 out of 30 and the HBO commentators would be like, "Taylor is beginning to pick up his activity."
If you scored the fight for Jer-bum, you're basically supporting the viewpoint that if you land 1 or 2 good shots in a round, you can win against a guy who hits you 7-15 times a round with solid but not extremely hard shots. This is boxing not toughman.

isn't Manny Steward Taylor's manager? as well as his trainer? if so, shame on him for pretending to be without blame as to Taylor's choice of Spinks.
Steward does this all the time. He has no problem taking credit for a fighter's success, but when and if the fighter loses, or performs poorly, or is boring as hell, he pretends he's just one of us, just as frustrated as the fans.
Steward likes to have it both ways.

i find it hilarious that DiBella's whole grand scheme back-fired completely. he figured he'd put Taylor in with Spinks, Taylor could play the big bad wolf - they guy who "wants" to fight (a role he hasn't always assumed) - and eventually, he'd knock Spinks out and look like a hero.
instead, looked at against the back-drop of Pavlik/Miranda, Taylor looks like a chump. not only did his camp hand-pick a shit opponent from a different weight class which nobody in the whole world was interested in seeing, but the fight was boring as hell too. Taylor diddle-daddled against a feather-fisted welter-weight, couldn't put him away, and was made to look bad in the process. all in the name of fears that Taylor would be knocked out had he faced a legitimate middle-weight. and then DiBella looks on as his ambitious client claims he will fight anyone, knowing that just because it's his fault doesn't mean Taylor sounds like any less of an ass saying such things.
basically, DiBella makes Taylor look like an ass everytime out. and makes him less and less likable.

either way. DiBella's the one who figured incorrectly that if he put someone in front of Taylor who couldn't hurt him that Taylor would be more aggressive.
i think the exact opposite is true. that when and if Taylor ever feels threatened is when he will truly shine (or be KTFO).

I guess the best thing you can say about Cory is that he genuinely seems like a decent person. I understand Leon wasn't always around for him but I've seen them both up at the HOF in New York and Cory really dotes on his father, taking care of him. One year Leon looked like he was really sick and Cory was always there by his side. Carrying his snotrag around and wiping his nose for him.
It was kind of sad to watch but Cory didn't seem like he was put out by it at all.

He stayed out of Jermaine's range and jumped in and landed 1 or 2 shots a round. The whole second half of the fight he was deplorable.
Jermaine sucked but Spinks was even worse. Jermaine couldn't handle Spinks speed but Spinks didn't do any better against Jermain's size and strength advantage.
It's becoming like every fight that goes to a decision is deemed a robbery nowadays. Mayweather won clearly 2 weeks ago and Taylor won pretty clearly last weekend.
I don't even like Jermaine, I was rooting like crazy against him in the Hopkins fight but it seems like people are scoring fights against him just so they can say he hasn't actually beaten any quality opponents.
I can already see the ridiculous claims that he's actually 0-4 against Hopkins, Wright and Spinks.

I agree, Compubox is crap including the number of punches that Spinks threw. Shooting out a jab that you miss by 3 feet shouldn't exactly count for a punch or given any credit.

I would give DLH the win against Mayweather before I give Spinks the win over Taylor.
Spinks did FUCK ALL the entire fight.

Why would it be a ridiculous claim? I scored all four against him - not because I have a vendetta against him, just because I thought he lost all four.
That said, I don't consider this one a great robbery. I had Spinks winning, but really haven't vehemently argued any scorecard, since so little action was offered in any round. But this was certainly the worst performance of Jermain's prime.

I have him 1 and 1 vs. Hopkins and I'm a huge Bernard fan. I thought he beat Spinks fairly easily even though he sucked in the fight and the Winky fight was a legitimate draw IMO. Once again I was rooting for Winky but he just gave it away at the end, similar to the Vargas fight.
All the fights were close and while Jermain is a frustrating fighter to watch I think it's a bit disingenuous to claim 4 losses for him in each of those fights. That's just my opinion anyway.
There is something about Jermain that makes other fighters stink to. Probably his tentativeness mixed with a wildness when he does decide to unload. Makes other fighters as nervous as him.
I hope he gets taken out his next fight...............but I think that's easier said then done.
I don't say that he's 0-4 in suggesting that he sucks, though. Sometimes the scorecards just turn out the way they do. It's what happens when you score fights round by round, rather than as a whole.
Of the four, I never really argued agains the outcome of Hopkins II, and this fight. The Wright fight, IMO, is actually the clearest loss - the more I rewatch it, the more I realize how badly Wink was screwed. And that's even if you go along with the suggestion that he gave away the 12th (which he didn't, he just didn't attempt to shoeshine as much as Jermain).

Jermain is Paulie Ayala reincarnated.
I didn't score the fight. Frankly, I stopped paying attention after four or five rounds. the "onliest" times I looked up was to hear Manny yelling at Jermain.
