:bears: Made the Calgary Herald today. I was covering Dale Brown's retirement show last night. Here's what they ran with....

Dale Brown is calling it a career, but boxing in Calgary has a bright
future.

In front of an estimated 600 fans, super lightweight prospect Julius Odion
improved his record to 9-0-2 with a dominating unanimous decision over
Mexico's Jorge Luis Lopez at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino on Saturday night. A
five punch combination dropped Lopez in the first round and Odion won every
round afterwards.

The night, however, belonged to former three-time world title challenger
Dale Brown. Brown, who retired from the ring in January, was awarded an
honorary World Championship belt before the fights. The usually even-keeled
Brown choked back tears during a ten minute speech in the ring.

On the undercard, Calgary's Goitom Ghebrezghi lost a technical decision to
the game Eduardo Calderon. The fight was stopped in the third round after
an accidental clash of heads opened up a cut over Calderon's right eye.

To open the show, Dale Philips, Calgary, and Jegbefumere Bone Albert,
Vancouver, both scored second round knockouts against over-matched Mexican
opponents.

Congratulations.

I guess the over-matched Mexican opponents shall go nameless.

 They were fucking BUMS man. I didn't want to mention that both took clear dives.

I had to write that REALLY FAST. The fights didn't end until 11:20, and I had an 11:30 deadline. It was crazy... pretty cool though.

They were that obvious?

The first one was. Albert, who opened the show, was making his bro debut. He's this huge nigerian kid... and he was fighting a short, chunky mexican fellow. A decent right hand sent the kid to the ropes and he just fell down and took a count.

In the second fight, Dale dropped his opponent with a body shot. Looked like he could have gotten up to me, but even if he couldn't, he didn't need to be mentioned.

Calgary? Holy Land or that other shithole???

You suck at paragraphs. That's the type of drivel people are used to reading at Sherdog, this shithole and other internet sites. You have no business writing for a newspaper, except when they are in desperate, desperate need of filler. I mean, you say that Calgary has a bright future for boxing, but don't even attempt to support that view.

Yeah, a lot harder to hit the favorites button and copying something from Wikpedia.

As I said, I had 11 minutes. It was a small, small story at the end of the sports section.

And besides, I'm not really a print guy. I don't have much experience, but I think I did a solid job considering I was asked to do it the night before.

You contribute nothing here as far as coverage, or interviews, or articles are concerned.

Andrew:
I know the deal where the imported guys take dives "You haul and we fall", so why not write up what you deduced from the fight after all?
The folks at the fish wrap probably wouldn't have printed it though, and sounds like they only wanted the results in print.

Well, if I had more time I would have went more in depth. It was just a few paragraph's to go next to a big picture of Dale Brown. They did a feature piece on Dale the day of the fight, so all they wanted from me was a quick recap of the night.

Thanks for the kind words, Karl.

Karl recognizes that the fundemental nature of the boards is for people to take their avatar-selves way too serious. When he chooses to, he provides better insight than almost anyone and if he respects what one has to say he can be a hell of a conversation.
