unless you speak Spanish, I'm not sure how you can claim him to be a good interpreter.

I don't know a single Spanish-speaking person who ever claimed Torres does a good job. My wife laughs every time he does a broadcast, and she's usually half-asleep for most of them.

But Jake, you have to admit he is funny.

I like him for the simple fact he tries to capture the essence and emotions of the cornermen. Other translators just translate in a monotonous, deadpan delivery.

Torres captures feeling, how cares if he gets the odd word wrong

no doubt. his best moments are when he does Erik Morales fights, as his corner (according to Torres, anyway) always seems to yell out "Pour some water on his balls."

and once again, your extensive Spanish-speaking background qualifies your opinion, right?

Here's exactly what he said:

Ese negro pega durisimo

The literal translation is: that black guy sticks very hard. In boxing terms, it's "that black guy hits very hard."

When Hispanics want to call a brother a n1gg3r (in a derogatory sense), they won't use an obvious term like "negro."

I don't think Torres is as bad as they say. His tone is what is absurd. Anyway, sometines he has to clean up what is said. It is funny that some of you know three words of Spanish or "your wife" or "your friend" or some other expert says something and youmake it proof positive for an anti-Torres rant. I thought Mayorga said in the corner that the black guy had hard hair. He makes mistakes, but sometimes he is just cleaning it up.

Not that it was Torres, but Jose Luis Castillo was asked if Chico Corrales was a hypocrite for suing him and then not making weight himself. Incidently. this was before Diego died. Castillo said "Chingue su madre." Literally, fuck his mother. The translator said "Forget that guy, I don't want to talk about him. I guess he sucks too:rolleyes:

As for my Spanish, I post on Spanish boxing boards and posted here for a few days entirely in Spanish and Donnybrook and I had long conversations in Spanish. I am not fluent in speech, but I understand it a great deal. Torres is decent. He just sounds stupid.

The problem with Torres aside from his annoying tone of voice is that he is fucking lazy when translating. For Example:

If a trainer tells his fighter to set up the jab, follow with a hook and work the body, all Torres will say is the last part. He would say: Hit him low! Hit him low! YOu have to hit him Low!

The guy has been around boxing too long not to know how to properly translate a hook or uppercut.

Alot of the times he sounds like he is making stuff as he is talking. I can hear the corner say something and in my mind I know exactly what a good translation would sound like and Torres will try to translate it and half way he'll just change it to something that sounds like it.

I've had other spanish speaking friends and family members watch fights with me and they have the same reaction to Torres. Some think he doesn't know how to translate. I think they guy has been around long enough not to know and is just fucking lazy.

Some times he is not even close to what the fighter is saying. Sometimes the HBO crew wonders why the corner is saying certaing things to the fighter but Torres translates about half of what is said or less at a time.

I thought Mayorga said in the corner that the black guy had hard hair.

That is correct. what Mayorga said was :"el pelo de ese negro es durisimo" which means that black guy's hair is rough. but when he said it, it also sounded like "Ese negro pega durisimo" which means that black guy hits hard.

Torres was fucking up at that post fight interview when Mayorga was talking shit about Forrest.

But as annoying as Torres is I think Luis de Cubas who manages and translates for Casamayor is worst. That dude adds alot of shit to what Casamayor says. Joel usually talks shit about everyone but that fool takes it to another level. He is just a clown.

Dude, I am convinced Casamayor doesn't even speak Spanish. I cannot understand a fucking word he says. Tito was difficult as well. I have trouble with Carribean Dialects because I am used to the laconic Mexican Spanish.

Wlad Guerrero is no easy time either. He just did an interview in Sport's cliches and I barely got a word.

I agree with you about Torres. I can't think of anything more boring than translating the shit that comes out of athletes or trainers mouths. I notice he usually tranlates the last 2 or 3 lines and might ignore the forst 2 or 3 as well.

I understand American Spanish Speakers, North or South and Spanish Spanish speakers, but People from the DR, Cuba and Puerto Rico speak Spanish in a crazy manner.

I just don't think he is bad. I used to work with translators and it really is an art. People make it out that he lies and is deceitful. He isn't. I think you nailed it. He is lazy at times.

It's a filler word, Reed. In English, people say, uhm, alot or Zab Judah says "you know what I'm saying." It is just to open the sentence. Bueno means good usually, but in this case it is just a filler word.

This is a filler word up front. I tend to say um OR AH. Like a waitress says do you want White or wheat bread, I say uh..wheat. I know what I want and I could just say wheat but a sound comes out first. I also say man allot. You know, man. Ok, man.

Exactly though, "nah mean" is common. Some people say "Yo."

I remember a post fight interview years ago, I can't remember the fighter but I'm thinking Humberto Gonzalez, anyway, the translater would say "I'm going to ask him..." and say the question in English, then he would ask the question in Spanish. The problem was, when the fighter would answer in Spanish, he never bothered to translate the answers back into English, he'd just go on to the next question.

Anyone remember what fight I'm talking about?

TFK
I remember something similar when Chiquita fought Saman SorJarturang. IT was Chiquita's last fight, and Saman rallied back to stop him in the 7th. Anyway, they asked Saman a question, the translator couldn't even translate the question, or the answer. They had to get someone else to translate - it was a whole big ordeal where 3 or 4 people were involved for what amounted to less than 5 questions

there it is. stick it in a loop and you have a full-length Zab interview.

My favorite is when fighters say "i'm pound for pound the best in the world in my division."

It does mean that too. I was going to write that, but I made a judgement call because Tito uses it as a filler word. However, I am convinced that Tito uses all words like filler words. He could talk for 10 minutes and say nothing. Same with Fernando Vargas. If you deleted the word Mexican or anything related to Mexican in his transcripts it would read.

"I'm..because...fight like wild...because......and I am.....therefore a.....would always beat a fake.....because I am so ......

God, I hope someday writers refuse to interview athletes. Less than 1% of them say anything ever.
Don't forget, Tito not only had microphone filler but camera filler as well. Don't have a mic around for a sound bite? No problem, just watch as Tito shows you with his finger exactly who's number one, or gives you a first class glimpse of the fist he uses to pummel his opposition with.

And he'll make sure you see them too, by continually waving them into the camera while bitting on his lip for emphasis.

well... we differ in our preferences there Brother Ike,

IMO Holy is every bit as funny as Mike.

The Jesus this and that is just classic.. I love how frustrated Ferdie got that time..
Ferdie said "OK! ASIDE from Religion... ASIDE From that.. beacause hopefully God is with all of us... but let's talk BOXING... Tell me what it was in BOXING TERMS you did in there"

Holy- It's not what "I" did, it's that the HOly spirit is in me and JEsus is alive..

at this point Ferdie just walked away in disgust..
No, Holy is funny but just unintentionally. I guess, Tyson is too, but he is just funny. I could sell MSG out masturbating:lol:  Come on, that is good stuff.

Honestly, most athletes are dumb. I can't tell you how many times someone has seen me watching FNF when Atlas interviews an athlete and people say "you are too smart to watch this."

Holy is funny and disturbing at the same time. I am immediately shocked at any fighter who claims he is a Christian which to me is logically absurd, but this board is filled with Christians even though the thought of being a Christian and liking organized violence is a contradiction. I think Holyfield is stark raving mad. It is funny, but it is like laughing at a retard for drooling. Not real classy.

Holy spouting off about Jesus is just so so so ridiculous.. it's great!

I love his fights just for that

Tyson, he is hilarious also..

I think Holy and Foreman are the funniest..

Foreman was funny and totally unintentionally. I was watching Molina/DLH awhile ago and Foreman went on this rant that Molina had an advantage because at 135 he had such thick Thighs:lol:  No, Molina will benefit at this weight he can take punches better because he has weight in his thighs!!He was passionate like the time he said James Page is p4p number 1 or DLH/Vargas looked like light heavyweights because of their shoulders or the time he said DLH had thick shoulders and that intimidated his opponents.

Foreman is the funniest.. no doubt..

he said Tito was scared of DLH cuz DLH's shoulders:lol:

he said during one fight that "being the shorter guy, all you have to do is close your eyes and punch upwards"

which contradicts in another fight when he said that "the taller guy just has to punch down.. he doesnt even have to aim"

then of course the time he got suspended for when Bowe Holy were fighting and Bowe landed pretty good and Foreman jumped up and YELLED.. "STOP THE FIGHT!!! STOP THE FIGHT!!!!"

Lampley tried to calm him down and Foreman got mad and said..

"THIS MAN IS GONNA END UP IN A PINE BOX"

George used to contradict himself all the time. Lampley would always try to clean it up, well George don't you mean this. Usually, George would continue with his idiocy and Jim would just repaet it and say ok that's George's opinion. You could tell he and Merchant really thought little of George's intellect. I agree with them though and it is the only thing Howard Cosell got right. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you are a good commentator. George was funny.

It's a filler word, Reed. In English, people say, uhm, alot or Zab Judah says "you know what I'm saying." It is just to open the sentence. Bueno means good usually, but in this case it is just a filler word.

"bueno" is like the "well" some people use to start a sentence u stupid fucks...

We have dealt with that and I said why I think Tito uses it as a filler word. Half the questions he was asked were not question anyone would answer with well. Tito is a retard though. All he ever really said was , Bueno, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico, Don King, etc.

Funniest interview with Torres was after the first Chavez/DLH fight in Chavez's locker room. Basically Merchant asked if he quit. Torres wasn't even done asking the question when Chavez snaped and yelled at Merchant BULLSHIT! a couple of times.

Torres was too close to Chavez that Chavez told him to step away and not to touch him. At the same time they were stitching Chavez's cut while doing the interview.

Chavez gave his answer as to why he didn't quit and yelled at Torres to translate it properly. You can see Torres was fucking scared  He told Chavez "don't worry I'm about to tell him what you said"

that interview used to be available on youtube but last time I looked for it I couldn't find it.

I remember it, Chavez yelled at Torres (or was it Merchant through Torres?) after the 2nd De La Hoya fight, when Chavez was asked if he quit.

He said "bullshit, bullshit!"

They later interviewed Torres and Torres said "yeah, he didn't want to continue".
