View Full Version : What Hatton brings that PBF's never dealt with...

Now obviously a similar thread can be made as to the things Hatton will be forced to deal with in PBF that he's never had to before. So let's not let that debate bleed into this one. This particular thread is about the things that Hatton brings to the table that PBF has yet to prove he can cope with. Here's my list so far:
1. Excessive holding and grappling - to the best of my recollection, PBF's never faced an opponent who has used the clinch at nearly 10 second intervals in order to control the pace of a fight and steal some resting time
2. Angles. The biggest advice Roger had for PBF in the first Castillo fight was for him to keep Castillo in front of him. If you watch the fight, he says this at least twice to PBF. Hatton is a master at leaping to his opponents flanks and attacking from there. This I think can cause PBF some problems as his defense is geared in order to protect the line primarily.
3. Unparalleled hunger and determination. There's few fighters out there you could claim are hungrier or more determined than Hatton. This has always been a key ingredient in defeating a so called genius like PBF (see Rocky I).
4. Undefeatedness. Off the top of my head, I can't recall PBF beating a fellow undefeated fighter who was also in his prime. Corrales I suppose qualifies, but given his circumstances at the time, he was clearly without the confidence normally attributable to a fighter who has not yet lost a fight. Was N'dou undefeated? Maybe. If so, I stand corrected. Still, Hatton's undefeatedness, whether PBF has dealt with it before, will be a factor.
5. Unorthodoxy. PBF has never faced a guy as unpredictable and wiley in the ring as Hatton. Hatton bounces on his feet, attacks suddenly, grabs, holds, pushes, all at a very rapid pace. Watch his fight with Castillo. Castillo was very disoriented by Hatton's pace and ryhthm. My guess is PBF will have difficulty adjusting too - especially when it comes to getting his offense going.

yep. i think of all the things anyone could think of to list, this will be the biggest factor. hatton basically cheats everytime out by holding and grappling the way he does. and the most annoying part is when he does it right after he lands a punch. i hate guys who do that. casamayor does that shit. hit and hold. hit and hold. wtf? you just hit the guy? now you're gonna grab him? it's not popular to point out, but SRL did that shit incessantly against Hagler to try to steal rounds. i fuckin can't stand it. see this is why i'm torn about who to root for in this fight. hatton is such a fucking stinker and he makes no apology for it either, even trying to defend it as a legitimate tactic and "part of boxing."

Actually Hatton claims to be an exciting fighter. He is up there with Spinks, Ruiz for the most boring fighter.

I disagree with the way you categorized his use of holding in your initial post (about stealing rest) but agree with what you say here.
I don't think Hatton does it to rest or buy time. He's a short fighter with short arms, he doesn't have a great jab and he's not great on the outside...I think Hatton does it primarily to manage distance, to get inside and get in position to throw his power punches. He's pretty good about punching both before and after clinches.
It not only is a good way for him to get close, but it also keeps his target more stationary...and allows him to load up on his punches (especially to the body).
He's also incredibly strong and can wear down his opponents by holding and wrestling.
Hatton wrestles and mauls to sap an opponents energy, plus when grappling he pushes off to get room, digs a couple in and re-grapples.

He holds because he sucks period. He has shitty ass stamina and no defence and hes scared to get hit inside. I would like to personally thank Floyd Money Mayweather for beating the shit out of this clown.

Its going to be interesting to see how the ref deals with Hatton's holding. The last time I saw a boxer/grappler get offset because he couldn't use those tactics due to the ref is Ruiz/JOnes. I remember Jay Nady reffed that fight.

I guarantee you all that Floyd will win. And he'll win dirty.
Whenever hatton gets near him he'll hold and tie Ricky up. Then he'll just potshot his way to the most boring megafight victory ever.
You heard it hear first.

Floyd's faced pressure fighters before. Many of them. Whilst Floyd will be head and shoulders the most skilled/talented fighter Ricky has ever faced. The last time he faced anyone with skills it was Collazo, and we all saw how well he faced. Ricky will get pot shotted to death next saturday.

I agree with this post. We all know that PBF has the ability to adapt/adjust to any type of fighter. The question is how will Hatton deal with PBF's boxing ability and speed. Yeah he can get fast sparring partners but nothing will compare him to the skill level that PBF possess. I'll Holla 5000

It's true - without a shadow of a doubt - that Hatton has never faced anybody near as good as Mayweather. He's faced a lot of good fighters, but there is nothing else like Mayweather out there.
However, the same is true for Floyd, IMO. Floyd's resume is much better than Ricky's, but in Hatton, Mayweather is facing the most dangerous, hungry and possibly difficult fighter for him to control, in his entire career.
This Hatton is twice as good as the De La Hoya that Mayweather faced. That version of Oscar would have lost to Hatton as well, IMO.
It's a big fight for a reason and its not the same reason Floyd v Judah and De La Hoya wre big fights. This one is live, regardless of the ridiculous fan bravado on these boards.

Floyd dd face a pressure fighter in Castillo and was not overly impressive in there. And as we saw, Hatton is in different league as a pressure fighter so who knows

I think it is the combination of pressure and speed that Floyd hasn't really faced.
Castillo applied pressure, but he is a pretty slow fighter and not nearly as dynamic as Ricky. DLH still has fast hands, but he isn't too quick on his feat and is not capable of maintaining the level of pressure that Ricky applies.
The closer i am getting to the fight, the more i can see Ricky doing it....which is strange for me because the opposite thing usually happens as we get closer to a big fight involving one of my fav fighters

Brother, I am hoping to GOD that you are right on every point, so don't get me wrong.
But I think that Hatton is so made stylistically for Floyd that it isn't funny.
Hatton is strong enough, but not nearly quick or fast or big enough to beat Floyd.
DLH at this point is faster, quicker and bigger than Hatton...and Floyd dealt with it and won albeit ugly as fuck.

But DLH is bigger, faster and more powerful at 147 than Hatton is.
I do realize that styles make fights alot of times, and Hatton's style is more problamtic for Mayweather than Oscar's style.
But again, I think that even at this point, DLH would stop Hatton.
I really think that Floyd will win this fight easy, even if it probably will be a stinker.

Floyd isn't a big strong man either. DLH isn't part of the equation. Floyd had to fight a style that was enough to get the win and expose DLH's weaknesses, that being DLH's old legs and his inactivity and his attempt at fighting in spurts because of his inability to fight at a constant pace throwing a high volume of punches.
I think Hatton brings a very different style to the ring AND youth with a much higher volume of punches and a tremendous amount of pressure not to mention a lot of body punching.

DLH's handspeed is faster than Hatton's, but his footwork is slower. But then, DLH could also reach out and touch Mayweather with his jab...Hatton doesn't exactly have that option.

That is a big thing. Against Tszyu (who was a very good and accurate counter-puncher too) he could handle them by staying close all the time and not giving Tszyu room to be effective. Against Flyd it will be different but I think Hatton will try that
