Yo-Sam Choi dies
Former WBC light featherweight champion Yo-Sam Choi, who has been in a coma since winning a bout on December 25th in Seoul, South Korea, passed away at around midnight Wednesday after being removed from a ventilator. On Tuesday the fighter was declared brain dead by the Seoul Asan Hospital after two examinations by a neurosurgeon-led nine-member panel. According to the Korea Times, Choi's heart, kidneys, liver and corneas were transplanted to patients on the Korean Network for Organ Sharing (KONOS) patient list. Choi (32-5, 19 KOs) won the WBC light flyweight title from Saman Sorjaturong in October 1999 and defended it four times, finally relinquishing it to Jorge Arce in July 2002. The

He fights like a mini-Holyfield with tight punches and blatant head-butting and it's comical (and surreal) that the ref let's him get away with it as much as he did. (I think he loses one point when it should have been 50)...which lead to his Yo-Ram Choi nickname.

It's been a while since a major figure in our sport has passed from ring injuries, in mY memory, at least. Hopefully, it will be longer next time.

Choi won't be a big enough figure to get the ban-boxing movement rolling again (in the US, at least), but the newer fans should be aware that it always (always) follows a death or major injury of a popular fighter.

There's been talk of Oscar fighting Hatton in May and talk of Oscar fighting Cotto in May.

But I get the distinct feeling Oscar will fight the winner of Trinidad-Jones.

Oscar has tried for years to get Tito to engage in a rematch. If Trinidad defeats Jones, I think the rematch with Oscar is inked within two weeks. And Oscar can go out fighting Trinidad and Cotto this year.

If Jones defeats Trinidad, I think Oscar and Roy will fight in May at a catchweight below 168.

And, if Jones defeats Trinidad and Oscar, Golden Boy can match Jones with Hopkins at the end of the year in one big final payday for both guys.

Plus, if Oscar loses to Jones, there's still a fight with Cotto to be made at the end of the year and his promotional company can also promote Jones-Hopkins 2.

That scenario makes more sense than Oscar fighting Hatton -- who Mayweather stopped. That bout leads nowhere. And the Cotto fight is really more dangerous for Oscar than fighting Trinidad or Jones at this point, since they are both well past their primes.

Also, Jones is shorter than Hopkins was. Oscar, Trinidad and Jones are all roughly the same size.

Seems like the best play for Oscar and his company, don't you think?

Oscar isn't scared to fight anyone, that much is certain. There is a point where it's just too much though. He'd have to fight at a weight far beyond his best to face Jones and I don't see him doing that. If Jones could get down to 160 I have no doubt Oscar would take the fight. I just don't think there is a acceptable weight that they could agree on.
