I really like Gomez, he's a good technical fighter, underrated by hardcore fans. But talk about a bridge too far. He'll be lucky to see the final bell.

I was one of the few that picked Gomez to stop Gatti.
He's underrated in some respects, but I don't see him as a good technical fighter. He's just solid - but better than people give him credit for.
Still, he's basic.
The one thing that IS vastly underrated is his CHIN...and remember Gomez has fought as high as 160.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this go the distance.
Peace.

if margarito is such an overrated bum as many of you haters might suggest, why doesnt cotto fight him instead of that club fighter?

I tend to agree Cotto already has an impressive CV, and bigger fights will come soon.

This fight's a big :flip: to everyone who said that Gomez was top-10 at welterweight because he beat the mighty Arturo Gatti.
whipping gatti obviously makes you a viable opponent as far as hbo is concerned. is a win over him at this point worth more than beating wilfredo negron, haters?
to quote michael irvin, I hope this match is criticized with "the SAME intensity" as when el nitro made his debut on the network.

margarito fought williams because williams was talking shit and he was also his mandatory.
regardless, he did take a gamble and lost. i'd still would like to see margarito-cotto.
win or lose, cotto won't escape unscathed from that fight.

Can someone translate this page, because this is what I got from the website through a cheap online translation.
"It sounds Gómez against Cotto 9-enero-2008 The suit would be April 26 with the semiestelar of Judah-Margarito. The next defense of Miguel Cotto is increasingly more concrete: April 26 in Atlantic City, possibly before Alfonso Gómez. According to sources of The New Day, Oscar Of the Valley seems inclined to be faced in its return to the ring to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in a collision of revenge indicated for May 3, remaining ruled out thus the champion boricua as rival of the Golden Boy. He narrowly beat Margarito and thats it. He's BEHIND Cotto.

You must not read many of my posts, cause I damn near dont bring up Phony's name unless a thread is about, or related to him. Its no secret I dont care for him, but to say I blindly hate on him is a joke.

i'd like to see Gomez in with someone around the lower middle/bottom of that Welterweight top 10 to see how he'd fair.....at the moment he hasn't done enough to warrant a shot at Cotto....and after beating Mosley, Gomez would be viewed as a soft touch....they've got to build on that momentum
When i first saw Gomez in the contender, his style did remind me of Cotto....the high guard, steady aggression and the way he puts his punches together

I guess I'll have to keep wondering.Yeah hes better but we all know Cotto beats the shit out of both. Obviously Cintron has more name and a title so he would be a bigger win. Getting Cintron in the ring would be the difficulty. Amagine how bad his hand would be if he was told he was fighting Cotto.

you'll have to ask Tam Tam that question - he's the one who brought him up. apparently, since Williams is slated to fight Cintron, it's taboo to ask the question, "why doesn't Cotto fight Williams?" I "think" that's what he's trying to say, although I can certainly understand your confusion as to the relevance.

i don't expect for a minute that Cotto/Williams will get made any time soon. Williams has one big win on his resume, and Cotto's an over-rated super-star. Why would he risk his HBO-hype credibility fighting a guy as durable and as big as Williams? But I don't think it's a crime to ask the question. Do you? I mean we all know that Cotto/Williams is "the" fight at 147 now that PBF has officially ducked all top welter-weights. Is there any denying that?
I think the argument could be made that Margarito and Williams are the two best welter-weights in the world. Let's see Cotto prove me wrong by fighting one of them. That's what I want to see (now that PBF has officially ducked all real challenges at 147).
