...as mentioned in the other thread. Here we can keep track our weekly training so that others have a notion of what we do on a regular basis.
In a bit, I'll list what I've done this week thus far. There'll be two entries, one will be The Regular Workout, and the other will be Greasing The Groove! It'll also keep me from getting lazy!
Maybe I'll join in too Buddy!

Ok, Sunday was my first workout day of this week, so I did the following:
1. Squats
1(set)*6(reps) with 135lbs
1(set)*6(reps) with 225lbs
1(set)*6(reps) with 315lbs
1(set)*5(reps) with 405lbs (I caught the bar on the holding pins that stick out from the side of the squat rack and almost lost my balance, so I racked the weight rather than do a working set which would have been 10 reps)
1(set)*6(reps) with 425lbs (I thought I'd go up 20lbs since my old training partner was spotting me, and I didn't go all the way down but rather 3 inches above parallel.)
2. Seated Calf Raise
1(set)*15(reps) with 135lbs (I'm guessing the contraption that I sit on weighs about 45lbs.)
1(set)*15(reps) with 225lbs
3. Weighted Chinups
1(set)*6(reps) with bodyweight (warmup)
1(set)*10(reps) with bodyweight and 25lb weightvest
1(set)*10(reps) with bodyweight and 25lb weightvest
4. Hanging Leg Raises (hanging from chinup bar)
1(set)*10(reps) with bodyweight
1(set)*10(reps) with bodyweight
5. Bench Leg Lifts
1(set)*15(reps) with bodyweight
1(set)*20(reps) with bodyweight
6. Shoulder Throws(My own invention)
1(set)*15(reps) with 50lbs
1(set)*15(reps) with 105lbs
1(set)*15(reps) with 150lbs
7. Leg Extensions (Haven't done these often recently)
1*10(60lbs)
1*10(120lbs)
1*6(180lbs) I could have done more, but the pad that goes around the front of your instep and frontal calf was worn away and the bar was digging into my shin...piece of crap machine.
*Shoulder throws are hard to explain. If any of you has ever done a judo throw, a shoulder throw, it's the same type of movement but done with a pulldown machine. It works the hip flexors, abdominals, and pretty much all muscle groups to a greater or lesser extent.
That was Sunday's workout. I generally have 10-15seconds rest between sets, but my back was a bit sore between my second-last and last set, so I sat down for a minute.
Short and sweet! :dunno:

Day 2: Monday's Workout
First I warmed up by doing 10 chinups with my bodyweight.
1. Standing powerpresses ( I do these and it's kind of a pushpress, using the legs but not a great deal. It works your whole body when you have to hold the weight overhead. I take it from the squat rack.)
1*6 (115lbs---I know, low reps, but it's hard on the wrists for me.)
1*6 (155lbs)
1*10 (195lbs---and at the conclusion of the set, I racked the weight, took a deep breath, grabbed it back, and raised it to the top position, held it for 5 seconds, and then lowered it fairly slowly...4-6 seconds on the way down.)
2. Rotator Cuff Raise(protects the rotator cuff and tightens it.)
1*20reps(10lbs each arm---to be abbreviated: e.a.)
1*15reps(10lbs e.a.)
3a. Incline Barbell Press (supersetted with upright rows)
1*50reps(45lbs)
1*50reps(45lbs)
3b. Upright Rows
1*25reps(50lbs)
1*25reps(50lbs)
4a. Barbell Bench Press(supersetted with lateral raises)
1*50reps(45lbs)
1*50reps(45lbs)
4b. Lateral Raises
1*20reps (15lbs e.a.)
1*20reps (15lbs e.a.)
5a. Decline Press (supersetted with Bent Over Laterals)
1*50reps(45lbs)
1*50reps(45lbs)
5b. Bent Over Laterals
1*20 (15lbs e.a.)
1*20 (15lbs e.a.)
And that's the first two days of my workout. I recently changed the routine so that it starts on Sunday rather than Monday. I do high reps for the bodyparts in which I don't want to gain mass.)

I will post today's workout tonight because I haven't done it yet.
I didn't really do Jack Sunday.. some chins but didn't really keep track

Buddy Rydell
01-15-2008, 03:47 PM
I thought you were running the mile everyday, LOK?
Regardless, I will post today's workout tonight. I've already done a set of 8 and a set of 9 chinups.
yeah man.. every day
I said "didn't do Jack"
I should have said "besides my mile"
I do that 7 days a week

Well, today I greased the groove:
Chinups:
1. Set of 8 bodyweight
2. Set of 9 bodyweight
3. Set of 9 bodyweight
4. Set of 9 bodyweight
5. Set of 9 bodyweight
And now I will do a few 12 oz curls on the couch with my wife in honour of her birthday and since she can't drink, I must have a few extras for her.
EDIT: DAMN, she asked me to get the 100 for her birthday so I'm committed, guys.
6. 8 reps with bodyweight
7. 8 reps with bodyweight
That makes 60 total. I'm getting the 100 tonight!
Buddy Rydell
01-15-2008, 06:26 PM
8. 9 reps with bodyweight
9. 9 reps with bodyweight

Buddy Rydell
01-15-2008, 06:44 PM
10. 1 set of 8
11. 1 set of 4...damn, I am fading. I've been banging them out pretty regularly.

Buddy Rydell
01-15-2008, 07:18 PM
Sorry Lokster, I couldn't get 100, I had to get 101!!!
100 for Natasha and 1 for our son, whose 29th week is today!!!!   :bears: :bears: :bears:
Awesome Buddy!
for me, today was pretty mellow..
100 pushups,
50 chins x10
1 mile run (on the eliptical today) about 7 min mile pace
then.. some handstand, walking on hands,
a couple minutes of the eliptical on hands.. *this one I'm really still working on, it is pretty fricken hard*
that's about it for today.. plus some back bridging... these REALLY help my lower back that has been bothering me a bit lately
Buddy Rydell
01-15-2008, 11:17 PM
Wrestler's bridges?
50 chins x10 chins? That would be 500 chins dude...and that would be bullshit!
Buddy Rydell
01-16-2008, 09:54 AM
Geez, my hands are a bit swollen today, and I have the occasional shooting pain going up my biceps!
yeah.. wrestlers Bridges and gymnastic bridges (on myhands) also..
my lower back has been bothering me since the weekend and the bridges really help out
I meant to type 5x10.. 50 chins.. not 500:lol:
Although I would like to work up to 500 chin sundays.. once I can do sets of 50:lol:

I'm a bit sore from yesterday and I DEFINITELY won't be doing weighted chins today. I'll probably skip biceps and back altogether today, and instead get'em tomorrow. I'll only do deadlifts for back today. Geez, I'm feeling it!

I didn't do dick today. I went out for lunch and had no workout at all. My arms and back are just simply too tired.

Yep, after doing 100 chins, LOK takes a rest also. It's not a situation where your body will recover because it is a very intense workout.:dunno:

50 chins 10x5

Buddy Rydell

I did two sets of 10 in the chins today at work. I'm headed to the gym at lunch, and I'll detail my workout afterwards.
Buddy Rydell
01-18-2008, 02:46 PM
Deadlifts
1*10(135)
1*10(225)
1*4(335) (*WTF? I did 10 with 315 last week, no problem. Obviously this is where my grip strength needs work, so...*)
Deadlift Grip Hold
1*25 secs (holding 225 on the Olympic bar)
1*30 secs (again, 225)
1*39 secs (225)
*This is a new exercise and I will do it to improve my grip and get my deadlift going up again. I'm actually a bit embarrassed. I used to do 405 for 8 reps.
One-Arm Dumbbell Extensions
1*30(30lbs e.a.)
1*30(30lbs e.a.)
Very easy. I could have gone heavier, but my grip was turned to mush by the deadlift holds.
Hanging Knee Kicks
1*15 (bodyweight)
1*20 (bodyweight)
E-Z Bar Curls
1*10(65lbs)
1*10(85lbs)...obviously my grip was still crap.
Leg Curls
1*25(50lbs)
1*10(70lbs)...nice and light, no problems.
Hammer Curls (Done as a giant set, no rest)
1*6(15s)
1*6(30s)
1*6(45s)
I could have done more, but I had to change and drive back to work. I know I could curl at least the 60s for 8-10 reps with a bit of effort. Maybe I'll start working biceps regularly again. Normally I don't because I do lots of chinups of different types.
I'll have to do Shrugs, Weighted Chins, Power Cleans, Reverse Toe Raises, and the plate-loaded gripping machine at home tonight. I just plain ran out of time.:dunno:

Time to start a handstand pushup thread. I just tried to do one, and my balance was all screwed up. I had a hard time getting up and against the wall. I was actually doing a handstand for like 3 seconds while trying to get my feet balanced against the wall.
I wound up getting halfway down about three times. It felt weird after a long time of not having done them. I plan on trying them about 5 more times today. If I can get one full one without slipping, I'll be happy.
That was another concern. Slipping and falling. It's like when I started chinups. All the stabilizer muscles have to toughen up first!
Buddy, the HSPU is a little akward at first but you'll get it quick (with wall anyway)
I still use the wall, I can't wait until I can do it without the wall but for now I need it
Buddy Rydell
01-21-2008, 11:20 AM
Through no choice of my own, I almost wound up getting one without the wall.
lol
I'm really trying to master handstands.. I practice them daily.. one of my goals is to walk a football field on my hands.. I'm getting better at it but not that good yet!
I am up to 30 or so HSPU on the wall

man.. I was just thinking I really need to step up the intensity Buddy..
I gotta rig up some dumbells in a backpack cuz I dont have a weighted vest, then I could do weighted chins
have you tried doing your chins holding onto towls over the bar instead of the bar? I hear that's tough

That would be tough, and like it is too tough for me right now. I want to develop my grip, and having a towel slide around would just decrease the traction. You could do it for awhile, but as you said before, when are you going to do that in real life?
The closest would be wearing gloves. You're not likely to climb anything by wrapping a towel around it and then gripping the towel with your hands. That's just not common. More likely, you'd use gloves.

with the towels, you put the towels over the bar and grip on the towels, as in they are hanging vertically.. you grip them like that.. does that make sense?

No no, I understand what you're saying. You're making the exercise harder by having to grip the towel, which is wrapped around the bar but not fastened to the bar with tape or anything.
The towel will slip and move around. Your grip has to be harder to compensate. Sounds good, but I couldn't handle it yet. :dunno:
And as I said, you don't always have a towel around like when you're at work, for instance.

Use a thick towel, I guess. Gripping the bar would be more effective in my opinion, but I guess your idea is a change of pace to shock the muscles...particularly the gripping muscles?

Well, the handstand pushups have made things interesting when it comes to working shoulders.
Last week I got 10 or so reps with 195...I can't remember exactly.
This week I did 11 reps with 205 in the standing power press, no problem.
Then I thought, what the hell---toss 225 on the Olympic bar, so that is four 45lb plates and the Olympic bar.
It looked like I was tossing it up, it was so easy. Then I held it for 5 secs, and then lowered it back down to my shoulders slowly for a count of at least 5 on the way down.
Yep, handstand pushups are pretty great!

that's what I'm sayin Buddy!
I had not actually shouldered in a while.. I went to my buddy's gym..
185 (a plate and a quarter) was like nothing.. honestly.. I could have done 30-40 reps
205 (plate and 35) an easy 15
225 (2 plates) prolly did like 12...
I was suprised.. that is all from HSPU's
But.. I guess if you consider my weight.. (currently 196- down from 210) and I do lots of HSPU's.. that's good weight

I'll post a clip when I can do 25 handstand pushups. I'll have a specific goal for each clip I do. For example, pressing 315 over my head, doing chins with a 50lb vest, squatting 500.
I plan on posting goals as soon as I acomplish them.

Shit, did I forget to post yesterday's training?
I did 3 sets of 10 in chinups
I did 3 sets of 3 in handstand pushups
and then there was my gym workout:
Standing Power Presses
1*6(125lbs)---a light warmup
1*6(165ls)
1*11(205lbs)
Rotator Cuff Raises
1*20(10lbs)
1*20(10lbs)
Incline Presses
1*50(45lbs)
1*50(45lbs)
Upright Rows
1*30(45lbs)
1*35(45lbs)
Bench Presses
1*50(45lbs)
1*50(45lbs)
Lateral Raises

1*50(45lbs)
Bent Over Laterals
1*20(20lbs)

Holy crap, I can already HEAR my rotator cuff tearing in half!
Well, today's workout was good, but I ripped a callous open on my right hand doing deadlift holds!
Deadlifts
1*6(135lbs)
1*6(225lbs)
1*6(335lbs)...I actually pulled the weight about 4-6 inches above waist height to get it onto the squat rack because I wanted to use the same weight for deadlift holds(basically holding the weight at the top of a deadlift for as long as you can to improve grip strength).
Deadlift Holds
1*10seconds(335lbs)
1*15seconds(335lbs)
1*7seconds(335lbs...I died on this set)
Chinups (just to wear out the grip)
1*(8+3) (bodyweight...I had planned to do 11 like usual but my grip conked out, so I had to jump back up right away and get 3 more)
One-Arm Dumbbell Extensions
1*35reps(30lbs e.a.)
1*25reps(30lbs e.a.)
Leg Curls
1*15reps(50lbs)
1*15reps(70lbs)
That's it for the gym as I had to hurry back.
Just chins, handstand pushups, leg raises, and regular pushups left throughout the day. It's a good day!

200 pushups

someburpees
100 bodyweight squats
from now on I am doing a least 100-200 squats a day after my burpees..

Light cardio today, I tweaked something in my sternum from squatting 455 for 3 yesterday, so I just walked for 20 minutes on the treadmill at the gym.
Also I've done chinups, but they go in another thread. :dunno:
last night
Ran my mile outside "pushing the jogging stroller" :)
5 minutes of elipitical on hands
5 sets of 10 HSPU
50 chins
some weighted one's.. DAYUM that was hard:doh:
3 sets of back/wrestlers bridge

I'm probably 3 or 4 weeks away from pressing 315 over my head. To tell you the truth, I don't even know how much I can get right now, but my guess is 225 for 10 today or 215 for 15. I'm getting geared up for the big push, so we'll see where things sit at the end of today.
One thing is for sure: my shoulders are getting worked today!
Buddy Rydell
01-30-2008, 02:15 PM
I was close.
I'll post my workout in a bit, but the high point was the 225lbs for 9 reps in the standing powerpress.
Buddy Rydell
01-30-2008, 03:48 PM
Grease-the-Groove warmup set of chins---6 quick reps.
1. Standing Power Press
1*6(135)
1*6(175)
1*8(225)
1*1(225----held at the top for 5 seconds, and then lowered agonizingly slowly...at which point I heard a little click and a pop:eeeek: ).
2. Rotator Cuff Raises
1*10(20lbers)
1*10(20lbers)
3a) Incline Presses (supersetted with upright rows)
1*50(45)
1*50(45)
3b) Upright Rows
1*35(45)
1*40(45)
4a) Bench Press (supersetted with lateral raises)
1*50(45)
1*50(45)
4b) Lateral Raises
1*20(20lbers)
1*10(20lbers)
5a) Decline Press (supersetted with bent over laterals)
1*50(45)
1*50(45)
5b) Bent Over Laterals
1*25(20lbers)
1*25(20lbers)
All my high-rep stuff on benches(incline, flat bench, decline) is done really fast and explosively to develop power.
That's it, that's all. I'm gonna rest up for tomorrow, which'll be chinups and handstand pushups...if my shoulder stays fine.
so.. check it out..
I was doing my 100 chins today and went out to Sams club to buy some steak and other things.. I end up coming home with a full smith machine/squat setup  so much for my bodyweight only training.. I'll be benching, squating and shouldering a lot now on top of my chinning and pushups. I just couldn't pass it up, great deal!

I haven't filled in my training log in a bit..
yesterday I decided that I was doing ZERO training.. I feel it was time to take a day off.. (well I did do a couple sets of pushups and my daily mile) but nothing else..

I don't have time to put it all in now, but those handstand pushups are definitely helping. I did 12 reps with 225lbs in the standing powerpress. That's an increase of 4 reps from last week. I decided to do only 3 sets because my lungs were gasping for air at the end of the set.
I have been slowly indroducing Burpees,
I am going to start doing these daily..
full ROM Burpees with a pushup,
starting doing decending sets starting at 10 work my way up to 20

Man, I'm thinking of changing my workout around so that I don't increase my reps in grease-the-groove all the time. We'll see, but it might be smart to maintain the chinups for awhile. Maybe stick to 5 sets of 10 for a bit and then work harder on other things. :dunno:

1*6(20lbers)
Yep, I'm on track to nail 225 for 15 next week, which I could probably make into 245 for 10.
I've never done 225lbs for 12 consecutive reps standing, so this is an all-time record already. The sky's the limit!

Monday's Workout
1. Squats
1*10(135)
1*10(225)
1*10(315)
1*4(405)...the bar started to slip off, and I was really going low so I kept it like this. I could have done more, but I want to get really low in the squat.
2. Leg Extensions
1*15(90lbs)
1*10(110lbs)
3a)Hanging Leg Raise supersetted with 3b)Hanging Knee Kicks
1*10(bw)
1*10(bw)

Well, the road to 315 is being put on hold for now. I am just too busy with baby preparations and work to really give it my all at the gym. Looks like I'm gonna have to revamp my training methods and switch it up a bit. Although the chins and handstand pushups can stay, the other stuff is taking up too much time and energy.
Today I did 8 reps with 245lbs in the standing pushpress, but I'm afraid I have to switch gears. I gotta get slim down a bit and that means changing my training and doing much more cardio. Maybe I'll get back into heavy presses later, but right now I gotta maintain.:dunno:
Tyler Durden

I predicted this.
i have upped my dailys on pushups to 500.. I think that is realistic..my chins not as mucg
Buddy Rydell
02-26-2008, 07:41 AM
I predicted this.
If you knew I was having a baby, then you probably did. Otherwise you're blowing smoke. I'm getting squeezed at both ends: the baby stuff and also work. I'm working towards getting another big promotion this year AND Natasha is starting to keep me awake all night because the baby is keeping HER awake all night.
Don't get me wrong; I don't mind. I can't wait to meet him, but after increasing my weights in the squat, powerpress, and deadlift for the last 6 months, the gains were bound to plateau eventually.
So I'll regroup, build my chinning and handstand pushup strength, and then start another building phase after this one-month maintenance phase is over....or maybe I'll keep concentrating on cardio. :dunno:
As long as I keep improving, that's the main thing for me.

It was going real well until the Superbowl :old: When Manning threw that reception  I threw my arm up in the air (I was hammered) I guess it was too relaxed and came out of socket a bit. It was an old injury about 10 years ago. I stopped for a few weeks. Felt like a tear in the back of my shoulder. Went to the doctor and he was telling me the front part of my shoulder was overdeveloped compared to the back of it, he is right.....I neglected to work that part of it. I am back on my routine now, seems to be OK. Only minor discomfort on incline presses, everything else is like it was :blobbox:
Buddy Rydell
02-27-2008, 02:17 PM
Maybe so, Lok, but there's no denying that's a sweet-looking tanktop he's wearing. Looks flexible too! Ty's the man!
I revamped the ol' squat routine so that my ass goes almost all the way down to the floor, and I use no weightbelt. It'll take awhile to get my weight in the squat back up to the same weight I used with a weightbelt, but it'll strengthen my core. New plan of attack which will give me better health overall. I'm doing front squats, regular squats, lunges, and leg extensions.
Plus, I did two sets of 17 and 1 set of 20 in the chinups. Life is good.

Marriage didn't do it because Natasha and I are so happy together, gray hairs didn't do it because I don't have a lot of them, but having a baby, a tiny child that will depend on me for everything...let's just say that really drove home the realization that I'm an adult, so I better be a really good one since I always wanted to give my kids a really good life. :dunno:

Well, I have made the transition to not wearing a weightbelt for any of my lifts. It's gonna take about 4-6 weeks to get my poundages back to what they were with the belt, but it will be worth it in the end. My core is tighter, my abs are sharpening up, and as soon as I can run again, I will (Christ, I really nailed my foot off the basement stairs).

Ty Ty Ty. This is a perfect chance for me to air this example. You think that flyes and isolation exercises are the best way to go. For me, they are clearly not. Different philosophies, different tastes. You're no more wrong than Reed is (your training philosophy and interests and REED's taste in music).
Bottom line, I bust on you and we have a few laughs, but anytime you want to start a thread in the Training and Conditioning forum, you know I'd be open to contributing to it and not just trying to ruin it for you.
So in that vein, let's keep this thread for rap music enjoyment. If a person doesn't enjoy rap music, they shouldn't post in it and they are free to start their own thread. :dunno:
I know how precious your rap thread was so I brought it here
I most certainly did not say the exercises I did were the best way to go, I said they were best for me :nono: In fact, you guys wanted me to do benching and other exercises instead, I explained I do not do them and then you went on about making fun of baby weights.... so you are a complete hypocrite on your soap box.

I capped on you because you started up arguing with me. REMEMBER? You can turn it whatever way you want, but I was being cool with you, and you were, in turn, trying to get an argument going. I tell you what: argue all you want because it's all good, but I wouldn't have teased you if you didn't show that you wanted to start up in the first place. :dunno:

There's a common thread though, Ty. You started pecking and being a bitch in this forum, so LOK and I teased you. In TAAA, I'm talking about rap, and then once again you look to get in a pissing contest and you start whining again. That's ok. I'm not really interested in that, but whatever floats your boat!
Thing is though, if you start this up, we're probably not gonna talk too much about serious topics because it'll always revert to teasing and oneupmanship. If you want it that way, cool. If not, cool too! :dunno:

I capped on you because you started up arguing with me. REMEMBER? You can turn it whatever way you want, but I was being cool with you, and you were, in turn, trying to get an argument going. I tell you what: argue all you want because it's all good, but I wouldn't have teased you if you didn't show that you wanted to start up in the first place. :dunno:
Yeah, and I was getting you guys pumped up and motivated, and using you to make myself do the same.....then you fizzled  You guys wanted me to do YOUR exercises but I wasn't having it because I was doing what was right for me

For awhile there, you didn't post in here for some time. LOK and I still did, so I kept up on the threads him and I posted in. And if you didn't have the wherewithal to post, you obviously weren't interested. :dunno:
LOK and I kept posting about our training, but we didn't detail everything. I told him I am dialing my poundages back up, but now I am doing my exercises without a weightbelt in order to strengthen my core (abs, intercostals, obliques, serratus and lower back).
Heck, we talked by phone about it. My exercises haven't changed at all, but I smashed my foot badly last week so I couldn't jog. Now I'm back to jogging everyday, and I still do my weights, chinups, one-arm chins, and handstand pushups.
Other than my foot being jacked up, my other training stayed on track.

well, I will say I have not kept as good a LOG as I should.. I just never feel like writing everything down. But I will say on a positive side... I am seriously getting close to being in the best shape of my life. I have run every single day and I am feeling GREAT! doing pushups daily, MAD crunches/situps daily, chinups Daily and running Daily. .

The nice thing about it, you can go back and see where you are slacking or where you need to step it up, alot of people plateau because they don't realize how they are lying to themselves little by little. If you ALWAYS make yourself write everything down, right away you know that set you took off, or that exercise you left out, or that rep you didn't get. You can tell yourself little white lies here and there and hurt yourself after awhile without even realizing it, at least that is what I learned from my "log" awhile back.

what is funny and ironic is when I was a trainer for a living I was very big on making clients keep logs, training and eating logs.. lol
but.. you know I guess I let myself off of it beacause it's not like I do complicated things. I don't do 3 day splits, or splits for that matter.. I don't do crazy reps, schemes of set etc..
I run 7 days a week, I chin and pushup 7 days a week for the most part.. some times I'll take a day and not do any chins or pushups.. but that is rare. I never take a day off from running
so.. I started a while back, before this fightbeat log, I was keeping one at home on paper.. but I stopped.. I kinda felt it was silly you know?
I do agree it's cool to look back.. when I'm banging out tons of chins or whatever it'd be cool to look back at say "wow.. I could only do 3 then!!"

Nice when you can look at the front page and see what you could only do, then go to the last page and see all that you accomplished. I did alot of different types of cardio and split routines, also kept food diary and was alawys trying to find new foods. For the training that You do, I guess it makes sense not to bother.

I've been doing 5 sets of 10 chins, 3 days a week. The last couple of Sundays, I've done 10 sets of 10 in addition to that. I want to gradually add more chins per week now that I can crank them out pretty easily.
If I want to do 300 chins in a week (up from 250), I can either:
1. Do 5 sets of 10, 4 days a week and then 10 sets of 10 on Sunday or
2. Do 4 sets of 15, 3 days a week and then 10 sets of 10 on Sunday
Which do you think is better? I'm sure it's something I have to try out for myself but I'd like some opinions.

Buddy.. you may think I'm nuts.. but I think I'm gearing up for my new plan
500 pushups daily
100 chins Daily
200 hspu daily
and my run daily
what do you think?
Buddy Rydell
03-14-2008, 02:35 PM
When doing that many chins, make sure to warm up your rotator cuffs with some rotator cuff raises. Be REALLY warmed up, Irish. More sets with less reps will make your chins more explosive, so don't be afraid to do more sets with less reps. That's my rule of thumb anyway. I sprained my ankle a bit today so I can't get my run on, but I ran for over an hour on and off today. I can still do chins though, and I'm gonna do a bunch of lesser-rep sets because I'm starting to feel my rotator cuff get a bit dicey.
More sets, less reps, and you protect your shoulders.

what do you think?
The pushups I can see.
The HSPUs I can see.
The chins would be amazing if you can keep it up, but just be careful because that's really high-level stuff. Try to keep your chins as explosive as possible so you can develop good pulling force and acceleration.

yeah.. I'm thinkin the chins will be the hard part..
I have been doing 50 daily for the last few days.. 5 sets of 10 and that seems fine.. the only thing that gets sore are my forearms..
I also have implemented crunches.. I have been doing only about 200 daily but plan to increase them as well
Buddy Rydell
03-14-2008, 02:56 PM
The chinups are really filling out my forearms. I'd say they are the bodypart that has grown the fastest other than my quadriceps because I've been squatting double my bodyweight for reps. I'm gonna do some chins today and keep'em going fast. I know I can get 50 but I usually get more, at least 5 sets of 15.
So it's not that far to 100 per day for me but I'd need to add some low-rep sets for the time being.
The way I see it, if Will Smith can do 4 sets of 50 in preparation for "I AM LEGEND", I can at least do more than I'm currently doing. :dunno:

Thanks for the feedback, fellas. I was leaning toward the first option, anyway. Hopefully, someday I'll get to the level you guys are at.
Buddy, thanks for the advice about warming up the rotator cuffs. I'm definitely going to do that now that I'm adding more chins to my routine.
Buddy Rydell
03-14-2008, 05:14 PM
Seriously, warming them is crucial. It's better to have them warmed up with a bit of exertion than be doing great and hear something pop. You're doing awesome though.
You actually motivated me, with my sprained ankle, to do a warmup set of 5, and then 5 sets of 10. I exploded over the bar because I was doing less reps, so I learned that endurance, in doing more chins, can set up really fast chins when I'm used to doing more in total.
Keep it up and sometime perhaps we'll all post vids of this stuff!

We did the shuttle run as part of the Canada Fitness Test. Back and forth, back and forth. I know what it's like.

You're such a child sometimes, Ty.
Short sprints of 10-20 metres: back and forth about 6-10 times. Start amd stop, start and stop. It tested your ability to sprint, decelerate, and accelerate again. There you go. Now that I have spoonfed the concept to you, do you feel better?

Yeah, I asked a fucking question.....thanks for answering, FINALLY :dunno: Sorry to bother you "grown-up". I guess it's like those basketball drills.

yeah, Buddy pretty much summed it up
it is used a lot in Bball drills etc..
I do it in my yard with tennis balls.
put a tennis ball out at maybe 10 feet, one at 20 feet, one at 30 feet, 40 and 50 feet
you run to the first, pick it up, back to the fence, run to the second, get it and bring it back.. etc.. etc. until you get them all.
it is done as FAST as possible and really gets your heart beating

Don't be so pouty, dude. If you had simply googled "Shuttle Run" and "exercise", then you'd probably answer your own question and not show yourself, YET AGAIN, to be such a bitch!
Let me show you: "Buddy, what is a 'shuttle run' ?" :dunno:
See, Ty? It's possible for you to communicate and ask questions without being an asshole!

That didn't explain shit. I had to give you an emoticon to get your panties twisted to get the answer. Then you said I was a child for giving you an emoticon  Cry me a river Mr. sensitivity.
Lok doesn't let his stature control his emotions, he gave me the answer without going into a tantrum.

Wow, you are an angry little boy today, dude. Me getting upset, me getting my panties twisted, me crying, me not controlling my emotions, and then me having a tantrum.
Wow, all these accusations reflected nowhere in this thread. (*sniffle-sniffle*). I just don't know how I can handle all this stress and attacks on my stature. Y-y-you BRUTE!

I didn't say anything you don't already think about :dunno: Brutal as though it may seem, I have no control over what hand you were dealt. Just reminding you about your deep seeded anger towards God and why your complex makes you act the way you do.....I thought the baby would take your mind off of it, apparently nothing can if that won't.

Deep-seated, Ty.
The rest is a cast in the water with a fishing line. Either you're projecting or a horrible judge of character. The angry speech all seems to come from you, dude. :dunno:

I've taken some time off to heal a lingering injury, but I'm still doing chins and handstand pushups. On top of that, I'm working abs by doing leg raises as well. I'm getting back into the weights and running this week.

Been following Jeff Anderson's 'optimum anabolics' program for the last two weeks. It's based on his concept of 'hyperadaptive cycling', basically you regularly cycle both the load and your protein intake to keep your muscles guessing and stimulate testosterone production.
I've switched round a couple of days to fit in with my boxing training, but basically
Mon Arms
Wed Shoulders
Thu Legs
Fri Back
Sat Chest
Week 1: 3 sets of 6 exercises to failure
Week 2: 4 sets of 6 exercises to failure
Week 3: 5 sets of 6 exersices to failure
Week 4,5,6: 3 sets to 2 reps before failure
Week 7: back to week 1.
So this week is by far the most intense of the program. Very challenging doing 30 heavy sets to failure within the 50 minute time limit.
Protein deprivation cycle begins in week 7 - Im looking forward to seeing if it works as advertised. Can't make any judgements on the program 2 weeks in, but I have gained some muscle and lost some fat and dropped 2% body fat, which is in line with my goals (I started 171, 13% bf, goal in 16 weeks 171 or above at 8% bf) but that probably would have happened doing any decent lifting program. Report back in a few weeks with how Im getting on. :crafty:

I will. Im particularly curious to see how the cycle of protein deprivation works because he makes some very bold claims about it in the book and the kind of effect it has on anabolic hormones. He claims that if you continue training hard to the point where the body feels the need to build muscle yet temporarily cut protein intake your body over compensates with hormonal response. Sounds superficially plausible, we'll see. Apparently you'll be able to physically and psychologically feel the difference. I suppose if Im Im walking around with a hard-on 18 hours a day and getting into fist fights at work I'll know it's worked. Still a few weeks away yet though.
interesting.. I bet he has something there..

I'd question it though: stimulating a bit of hormone release would only be useful if it could be continuous. Doing it for a bit at the expense of protein wouldn't be advantageous because you're stimulating hormone release to build muscle. Those two woud seem to be at cross-purposes because when you reduce your protein intake, your muscles catabolize themselves for protein. :dunno:
Still, Hutster should DEFINITELY inform us of the results so that we can know if the application is useful for him.

well yeah, he says the hormonal spike persists for a period once the protein is returned. So in effect it's advantage is in it's after effect, once high protein is returned. That's the whole point in 'hyperadaptive cycling' as I understand it - your body's reaction to stimulus lags by a few weeks so by tactically cycling various periods of over training/undertraining and under consumption and over consumption of protein you can coax your body into effectively overcompensating during rest periods and high protein periods. They say there's nothing new under the sun - I am pretty skeptical too, but I felt like trying something new so Im giving it a go. The thought of an enormous surge in testosterone sounds like fun in and of its self anyway, doesn't it?:cheer:
I'll do this for the 16 weeks of the program then I'm getting my ass into a proper gym with a power rack and getting back on Rippetoe's starting strength.
I can tell you guys something that REALLY works..
the next best thing to steroids IMO
Body Opus..
it is kinda a modified atkins diet in a way..
I have done this 3 times or so and the results are incredible.. I mean.. enough so that some will think you are on juice.

I'll tell you what man.. This REALLY works.. if you follow it and train HARD, I have bet people money on this one.. it works like you won't believe. I thought of it when you said about that plan.. cuz this by playing with the carbs.. depleting and then carbing.. it has an effect on some anabolic and natural processes in your body and the gains are crazy.. each week after we'd "carb up" we were MUCH stronger than the week before
