I did 3 halfway down handstand pushups. Like when I started doing the chinups, I gotta start slow and build up momentum. :bears:
So this is the thread to get'er done. I will be doing tons by the time my kid is born.

I got my first one, all the way down. :bears:

K, I'm on it now. I got 2 all the way down. Balance is improving. Good thing I have been doing heavy shoulder movements or it might be too hard. I'm gonna get 5 sets of 2 each day this week, and then gradually build it up.
I'm at 30 or so Buddy but I have been working at it for a bit.
I'm going to try them on my perfect pushup's so I can go deeper or else on phone books

You could probably get a couple of cinderblocks and do them on those.

yeah.. I need somthing.. I have just been doing them on my hands but as you know.. your head hits before you are that low.. I'm sure when I get on blocks my numbers will go down.
I'm shooting for 50 though
Buddy Rydell

I'm sure I can increase them faster than the chinups because I did them before.:dunno:

are you gonna take a clip?
Buddy Rydell

are you gonna take a clip?
As soon as I get a respectable number like 20 or 25. I'm not going to waste a bunch of time to record me doing one. We need to take an inventory of the clips for each thing that we're gonna do.
Also, I'm finding that the nerves in my neck, shoulders, traps and upper back are kind of re-routing a bit because the tendons and everything is getting reaccustomed to supporting my bodyweight upside down. I get little nerve firings going up and down my neck and arms occasionally.
No problem with the handstand pushups now though. I'm gonna do 2 or 3 reps for about 5-6 sets today.:dunno:
I would take a clip but I dont think anyone really cares:lol:

Also do u keep balance all the time or are u using a wall for it?

I still have to use the wall at this point
Buddy Rydell
01-22-2008, 05:21 PM
It's probably for the best.
Future tip: I find that if I look at the floor when I'm doing a handstand, it's easier to get balance for a handstand without wall support. I'm just sayin'!

no way - and when i do those shoulder pushes with free weights i could do my own bodyweight maximum 10 times if even...

i can do about 10.......i like doing a set each day before dinner...then when i'm done just stand on my head for a while as a neck muscle excercise
but i tried it with blocks to get a better ROM and i couldn't even get up off the floor    :dunno: :dunno: :shit: whats with that? :warning:

Solid sets of 3s now, anytime I want'em. The body is getting accustomed to the extra weight, and I shake a tiny bit as the neuromuscular pathways reaccustom themselves to the old movement, but it's gonna pay dividends in all my pressing movements.

last time I shoulderpressed I was suprised at my strength considering I really dont lift weights anymore.. I was shoulderin 225 for reps.. I know that is not incredible or anything but I was happy

Do your shoulder presses standing. Your whole body has to handle the load rather than sitting in a chair where you don't have to stabilize everything as much.

I like doing them standing.. I used to in the gym...
I really dont do them much at all.. I just do my handstand pushups..
I've worked out with a guy who was much stronger than me with the shoulderpress but couldnt do a single HSPU

why not?
Buddy Rydell
01-23-2008, 11:01 PM
why not?
Because your traps and neck might relax a bit as might other muscles that are resting. Your hand slips and you could snap your neck. Trust me, I know. When I was a kid, I was supposed to be doing handstands in gym class and I wound up with torn neck muscles, a separated shoulder, and fucked nerves in my neck.

01-25-2008, 10:21 AM
 i'll try to avoid it then
could doing HSPU be shitty in terms of getting a ROM? :dunno: like developing only part of tricep, shoulder
Buddy Rydell
01-25-2008, 11:09 AM
I dunno. Bench press is done lying on a bench. If you did it on the floor, you would only get your elbows down to a 90 degree angle. True handstand presses don't give as far a range of movement as doing presses behind the neck, but if you go too low doing presses behind hte neck, you can tear your rotator cuff, tendons, cartilage, or just plain dislocate your shoulders.
I wonder how many people have gotten tendonitis from presses behind the neck.
I'm sure handstand pushups are fine as a training adjunct, provided you have a competent spotter. :dunno:
Buddy Rydell
01-25-2008, 11:27 AM
3 sets of 3 today already. I may do a bunch more before the day is out!
do it on blocks to get better ROM
Buddy Rydell
01-25-2008, 12:27 PM
Also, try to keep your hands a bit closer together than you normally would. That also increases the range of motion for the triceps and deltoids. I'm actually feeling nerves firing here and there as they re-route and grow accustomed to all that weight on my hands.
It's a cool feeling though because I know that the muscles, tendons, and connective tissue are all growing accustomed, which translates to greater strength!

He must have titanium tendons. I would probably lose my front teeth if I did something like that. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they could do at least 50 with perfect form and good speed.

Well, it's sets of 5 today. I have already done 3 sets of 5 handstand pushups. It really makes a huge difference. Eventually, I'll do them weighted!
Buddy Rydell
01-29-2008, 03:20 PM
Woo-hoo! Sets of 6 today. I was going to alternate days, but I decided not to. I am gonna shorten the gap between my handstand pushup strength and my chinup strength!
I think tonight I'll do a lot of HSPU's

I sued to love HSPs, but I haven't done them in a long time. I actually read that they are really bad for the shoulder/arm sockets.

I don't remember. I also read that leg extension machines and pull down machines are paricularly bad for joints, since the range of motion is restricted by the machine, putting most of the stress the joints. Actually, what I read stated that free weights are the easiest on the body when used properly, due to the fact that the body moves naturally without the restrictions of a machine.

I'm with you on some of it..
Leg Extensions are a terrible exercise! lat pull downs with a wide grip and done behind the neck are also no good on your joints...
but HSPU, I do not think that is bad at all.. I think generally handleing your own weight is a good thing.. now if you had no strength and tried one I guess you could hurt yourself

That's good. I'm gonna see how many reps I can get up to per set. There's a guy here at work who can do 30, but he's 160lbs. I'm doing sets of 13, but it is definitely a bit hard at times. The way I see it, I wanna see if I can work up to sets of 25-30 reps. If so, then I can do ropeclimbing in the spring with no problem at all.
As for the handstand pushups, I'm varying my hand-spacing, my back arch, my distance from the wall and even getting one or two without the wall although it is still nearby if I slip.

for the last few days i've been doing a set every 30min, alternating between chins and hspus....good pace for me i think, but i can only do these at home...which is maybe 4 hours after work before i go to sleep...so i cant get anywhere near the numbers you guys are talking about

I space them out evenly while I'm at work, and I do them perhaps a bit closer together when I'm at home. I am currently alternating days: yesterday was chins, and today is HSPU.
I do them an hour or so apart when I'm at work. I do'em at 10,11,12(at the gym) and either at 2pm. I do a set or two at home as well.

I am now doing sets of 15-17 reps now. I'll hit 20 reps in a few weeks. My goal is an improvement of 5 per month. That means I should be able to do around 65-70 reps at the end of next December.
We'll see how it goes.

Great thread!
this excercise is amazing for balance. Becaue of handstand pushups, I can do walking handstands across a room unaided now ! Its amazing how good your strength and balance improves.
I usually do three sets. first set between9-11reps, the second set rougly 8-10 and then 5-7 for the third set.
However it seems I'm plateaued a bit. Most I've done is 13 but I find it moe difficult to increase that.
Maybe I shuold increase the sets I'm doing like you guys are. I'd love to keep improving in this area.
Buddy Rydell
03-01-2008, 02:37 PM
I would make sure you space out your sets, Breeze. You don't want to blow your wad by trying to do it all close together. The idea here is functional strength, which means you can do it any day of the week. I usually have at least an hour between sets.
Hope this helps. I can actually now do one without touching the wall, but not always. Sometimes I have to touch a tiny bit when I start to wobble. Balance is a bitch in this one.

I would wait until you can do at least 20 against the wall comfortably. Who knows? Maybe your stabilizer muscles are stronger and can handle it. Mine can't yet but everybody is built different. How much do you weigh and what's your body dimensions? Bodyfat level? Height? That type of thing.

Got my third working set of 13 or so. I should have kept it to 10, but I felt like doing a few more. For my last few sets I'll do 9 or 10 each.

Did a set of 10 about an hour ago. Let's tally up thus far!
5, 11, 10, 13, 10---49 thus far. I guess I'll fire off 11 and make it an even 60.

Done, no probs...other than my arms being a bit tired.
Buddy Rydell

Once again, 5 to warm up just finished. I'ma keep this up for as long as I can...barring unforeseen baby stuff.
Buddy Rydell
03-24-2008, 06:13 PM
5, 10, 10, 10, 10, 7...I was a bit tired for some reason, or distracted as I think the baby has gotten into final position.

Well, back to the HSPU thread. Warmup of 5, 2 sets of 11, no problem...and three sets of 12 on the way. Gotta keep these up, no matter what!

Wound up doing an even 60 yesterday. Today is the chins.
I havent done HSPU in 4 days!
today i'll bang some out..
I have been doing my chins, pushups, and situps daily but for some reason the HSPU have fallen off..
Buddy Rydell
04-23-2008, 08:48 AM
The nice thing about being at my job is routine, routine, routine. I can do my chins, pushups, and leg raises without fail throughout the day. I did 63 chins yesterday without really trying much. I just popped over to a quiet area, and then I do a quick set or two.
Plus, if I get here a bit early, I can take an extended lunch and get stuff done then as well.
Buddy Rydell
04-23-2008, 10:24 PM
Frig, so busy today I didn't have time for HSPUs. I'll get'em tomorrow. :dunno:
I did 3 set of 20 this evening
Buddy Rydell
04-24-2008, 09:12 AM
The lack of sleep really starts to get to me after awhile. I need to focus in order to get the sets, but all I want to do is sleep at my desk.
Buddy Rydell
04-25-2008, 01:20 PM
Thus far today, I've done 12, 14, 15, 15, and I'll probably do three or four more sets at home. I'm gonna go for 100 total today.
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 10:08 AM
These are getting to be an easy enough routine. Still, right around 20 or so, I crap out stamina-wise. I have to work these harder than chins, I guess. :dunno:
i'm going for 100 today too Buddy! you got me inspiried:bears: I've done none yet today but I'm going to start right now!:cheer:
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 10:53 AM
I've done 5, 15, 16, and I'm also going for 100 today, Lokster. I'll do 2 more sets of 15-20 when I'm at the gym today, and then a few more sets in the afternoon and a few in the evening. I will definitely get 100 HSPU today even if I have to do sets of 1-5 reps at the end!
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 12:12 PM
That's two more sets of 15. One at work and one at the gym. I could have gotten in two more sets, and in fact I might go get one now.
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 12:24 PM
Thus far, it's 5, 15, 16, 15, 15, 18...so that is 84 total. If I get one more set of 16, I'll have 100 before I go home. Heck, eventually I may have to go for 150 or 200.

Nothing compared to you two freaks, but got up to 3 sets of 5 chins with 75lb weight and 3 sets of 5 extended range incline push ups with 92lb yesterday. Coming along nicely, way stronger than a month ago. Aim to be well over 100lb on both by the end of the summer as well as up to 350 on Dead Lift.:blobbox:
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 12:44 PM
Hutster, do you wear a weightbelt when you do your deadlifts? I recently stopped wearing one, which necessitated me decreasing the weight until I work back up to my usual levels safely. 350 is really good. How much do you weigh?
Personally, right now, I'm sure I could do around 350 without a weightbelt. That's partly because I know my grip strength is strong enough to hold my weight, 205, hanging by one arm from the chinup bar for a little while.
Still, I'd be risking injury to do that. I'll work back up safely over the next few months.
Buddy Rydell
04-29-2008, 01:19 PM
And that was 16, which means that at 1:18pm, I have already done 100 handstand pushups for the day. If I kept going for more sets, I could really set a great record, but I'm gonna take it easy and just do chins tomorrow and alternate days!
Buddy Rydell

I get the feeling that the heavy shoulder presses were holding me back from doing really good numbers in the HSPUs. Now that I have put them on the backburner, my numbers will likely go up again. When I can do 100 HPSUs and 100 chins on an alternating daily basis, I will start adding more reps or different stuff.

I don't even know what a weight belt is for, TBH. I have very minimum equipment, just the bar and some iron. I do 1 arm benches on a stability ball (working my way up to 100lb on that as well) and I have to clean whatever I squat. Old school baby! (I weigh about 170)
Can't do 350 yet. Im working with 260 for reps right now, but thats going up very easy and progress is coming along linearly in everything, so Im thinking 3 months or so of adding weight to the bar and 350 is a realistic target. Strength training is the fucking bomb, every work out has a purpose!

oh fuck off you and stop patronizing me! Im just done telling you the other week that Im a novice on every lift and you two freaks are advanced or Elite for everything!
I'll get there though. I was actually pretty glad to find out how weak I was on the major lifts, in a weird way because it gave my work outs a purpose. Before I was just going through the motions with the vague intent of 'getting in shape' and generally getting nowhere. Now I have very specific targets which makes things way more fun and effective.:crafty:

I dunno, Lok. I can't see that vid at work, so I'll have to check it at home. I can do sets of 20 in the ol' handstand pushups now, so the next midrange goal is sets of 25. Eventually I'll be doing well over 100 every two days. I alternate them now, yesterday I did about 95 chins before I saw Iron Man, and today I'm doing about the same in HSPU. Between the two, I've changed my overall strength and it feels easier on the joints as well.
i do sets of 40 everytime now.. I'm going to go all out this weekend and see how many I can do.
I'm just doing them on the floor though.. the real way is on blocks or something so your head doesnt prevent full range of motion.. but.. oh well

You'd have to be careful that the cement blocks didn't slip. Regardless, The range of motion is increased if you hunch your shoulders or arch your back so that your eyes are aimed at the ground like you're doing a reverse incline press.
I know soon I'll be doing sets of 25 and then I'll just keep going up. I'm way stronger than I used to be. It's good to keep this type of overall body strength. Functional strength, that is.
I thought about trying kettlebells, but I'm wondering if it's worth it.

I was gonna do my 100 today, but I have so much crap that needs to be done, I'll get 100 tomorrow.
Today was a good day,
only ran 1mile
but I did 100 HSPU, 100 chins, 500 situps and 500 pushups

You guys gotta get yourselves a weighted vest for your hand stand push ups! I can't believe how much stronger Im getting with this thing - up to 30 chins from 14 and Im up to 100 push ups from 60 odd. In both cases I just stopped at a round figure, rather than going to failure. I've been working both in low rep ranges 6 reps, 5 reps, 3 reps, 2 reps with more weight each time, so I wasn't sure if that would translate to bigger numbers without the weight, but I just tested out today & works a treat. Doing chin without all that weight on my back feels like Im gonna launch myself through the ceiling. :crafty:
Im guessing you freaks could probably easily get up to 50 HSPU's with one of these things.:eeeek:
Buddy Rydell

I have a weightvest that goes up to 50lbs, but when you do handstand pushups, it starts to fall over your head even if you have it buckled at the waist. Perhaps if I figure out a way to have a strap between the back and front that goes between my legs without pinching my balls or choking my 10lbs of dangling fury, I might be able to use it for handstand pushups.
Hut*Hut
05-12-2008, 07:49 AM
ah....never thought about that. I've certainly seen guys doing HSPUs with vests though, you should find a solution, where there's a will there's a way! They'll send your numbers soaring if your anything like me.
but when you do handstand pushups, it starts to fall over your head
yeah.. that could be bad news:lol:

4 sets of 25 HSPU, baby! WOO-HOO! Alas, all is not perfect. My new computer has given me the blue screen of death, so I am forced to use my laptop until I can get the big one fixed. Fortunately I have a warranty, but there's a ton of good stuff on it, so I don't want to lose it. I am able to boot up for a few hours or so, so I'm gonna transfer everything.
Still, 4 sets of 25. That's a record for me. I did them outside where the patio stones are, and they provided enough traction that I wasn't worried about slipping! :kidcool:
From here, the next goal is 30, then 35, then 40, etc etc. When I can do 4 sets of 50, I won't increase the overall reps but instead I will eventually build to 2 sets of 100. :crafty:

I'm still knocking out the 25s, but I'm trying to diversify a little bit. I think I might drop down to 20s and also jump into circuit training. I don't do enough of that, and I have as much mass as I'll ever need. In fact, I'd look better if I lost a bit of muscle...and bodyfat!
i been slackin on my HSPU's lately.. I just did a couple sets and re- remembered how much I love them

I been doing a lot of pushups, running, ab wheel rollouts.. (on my feet) and bridging.. as well as chinning but not going crazy on chins.. just every time I walk by I do them
I probably average 50 chins per day most days and once a week do a 100

I do sets of HSPU still, and I seem to be able to increase the reps more easily on HSPU than on chins. I currently do 16 per set, but I know I could get at least 25 consecutive reps. I'm gonna keep uping my rep scheme or maybe go for a one-set max once a week.

Tried HSPUs for the first time the other day, was chuffed to manage 3 full range. :cheer: Yeah, I know, pitiful compared to you lot, but not bad for a first try especially as I honestly thought I wouldn't be able to manage a single one since I can only 'military' press about 80% of my bodyweight with a BB. I figured a HSPU would be at least 95% bw when you factor in the resistence of your feet against the wall?:dunno: I guess it doesn't work like that. Anyway, I've started working them in place of low rep presses.
I've been inspired by the gymnastics at the olypics to master my bodyweight so I'm also working towards 1 arm push ups, pistols and ab wheel roll outs. :bears: Pretty close on all of them. Pistols I can do full range on a bench, but I don't have the hamstring flexibility to go the ground yet (same problem with squat form I reckon so mastering pistols should help my squat form). 1APUs really come and go for some reason probably because they're the most mentally taxing with the amount of full body tension you need to muster up. I managed a full one the other week then regressed again this week. Just started the roll outs last week I'm expecting them to take a few weeks, pretty tough.
I figure learning these skills is an excellent investment for any times in the future when I don't have access to weights.

I have no problems with sets of 25, but I am doing chins immediately followed by HSPU, and then knee kicks and hanging side twists with my knees tucked up high to work my obliques.
I'm gonna see if I can keep them going higher and higher.
