Los Angeles, Cal., February 1, 2008 – Alfonso S. Gomez (18-3-2) is speaking out about his upcoming fight against Miguel Cotto (31-0-0), saying that the 12-round battle for Cotto’s WBA Welterweight belt will give him the chance to achieve his life-long goal of a world title while silencing his critics once and for all.
The April 12 HBO World Championship Boxing event marks Gomez’s return to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the scene of his spectacular 7th round knockout of Arturo Gatti last July.

I'd love to see Gomez win this fight. It just isn't happening though.

Alfonso Gomez has the same chance of winning this fight that you would have of picking 213 out of a hat that contains the positive integers.

at times I think Gomez will surprise people because he is a solid fighter. Nothing special but he does alot of things well. But he just ain't fast enough or strong enough to keep Cotto of him.
Then again Cotto could have a lackluster performance like he did against Urkal. Probably and hopefully he won't. But if he does, Gomez will give him problems.

If Cotto has problems with Slowmez, he should go back to Caguas and hide under a rock.

true..everything is set for another lackluster performance by COTTO......even though even in his last lackluster fight against Urkal..he beat the shit out of him...Urkal won what?> 1 ROUND maybe..:dunno:
Better a lackluster performance against Gomez than Margarito....:crafty:

You can last more than 1,2 rounds and still not be in the same league as somebody.
I predict that Gomez will not win a round, and will get knocked out. He will be thoroughly outclassed because he has skills de mierda, and was on the contender making him :shit:

Gomez is bigger than Cotto and his toughness is underrated. That's why I was in the distinct minority in picking him to beat and stop Gatti.
And I'm almost sure Cotto is going to look past him.
LOL @ Gomez saying he's "faster" and that his "boxing and counterpunching skills are superior."
No doubt it SHOULD be a mismatch given Cotto's skill disparity...but a tough beard and relentless pressure go a long way, along with size and having fought at 154 lbs. for a long time.
Peace.

The bad thing is, being tough and strong is just going to get him severely injured. I see no chance of him beating Cotto in any way, and he may hang in for awhile and take some bombs, but ultimately nobody can just get broken down and keep coming (Jesse Feliciano?)....but yeah
pure mismatch, Cotto TKO 6, without losing a round

 Good point.
Just don't discount the mental laxity...when Cotto does that he tends to be lackadaisical and I can't see him getting up for Gomez.
Peace.

is he bigger?
He doesn't FIGHT bigger (i.e. long & tall)...but Gomez has been at higher weights longer and is a bit taller. And can be very physical.
