According to a recent report released in Esto, a Mexican news agency, Team Ponce De Leon has received an ultimatum from Golden Boy Promotion to fight Gerry Penalosa. In my eyes this was good news. After all, the fans have been crying for the rematch—so hopefully everything has finally fallen into place. Joe Hernandez, Ponce De Leon’s adviser, dropped a bomb on me.

Anf of course, it IS realistic, it's just incredibly rare to see such realistic-ness and honesty in boxing. It's usually all hype or excuses.

He said they want him to fight Penalosa, which is what just about everyone said after they fought last year...but that if they go to the Phillipines they want compensation (and deservingly so).

They also have a tough mandatory coming up with Juan Manuel Lopez.

Hernandez didn't say they were ducking either.

There's no reason Ponce De Leon should move up in weight to fight Linares other than money...and if they accepted the fight they'd simply be cashing out (as many fighters do) and he basically admitted that.

blah blah blah. Boxing is the most real sport and the fact that sanctioning bodies exist is the main reason we often do get to see who the best fighters are. Take away sanctioning bodies and it would be far worse.

It was critical to the point I was making. The best can and do face each other in boxing often. And when they do, it's often because sanctioning bodies have provided recognition to the challenger by ranking him or the champ by giving him recognition via their belt.

Guys get killed because they are in the sport of boxing. Who reminds you of Ponce who has died in the ring? The only guy I can think of is Tomasello. That's one.

I agree that Ponce doesn't match up well with Linares, but who does? Penalosa rematch makes sense, but I don't think Ponce has to be afraid of Juanma. He may lose, but I'd pick Ponce.

Ih guess his manager doesn't think he can fight a better fight than that against Penalosa so I can see his point, it's not a question of confidence, It's a question of realism. The risks are higher there so give him a higher reward, I'm in total agreement with that. I guess it's a pretty big fight over there so there's probably money to pay him correctly.

For real, its not like he is struggling with complete bums, for all his limitations he has has put together a half decent resume so far, Lopez would be another excelent addition...he is absolutely right to avoid Linares at 126 however, particularly if making 122 is not yet a problem

This manager is remarkable because he is really trying to do right by this kid. I don't know why more people don't see that frankly. Ponce has a family that loves him. Most managers, like Stewart go out of their way to protect their good name... For example, Taylor's lack of a jab is not STewart's fault! This manager is trying to get Ponce wise to the big picture and in the big picture Ponce will get injured if every fight of his he takes lots of shots.
