According to a recent report released in Esto, a Mexican news agency, Team Ponce De Leon has received an ultimatum from Golden Boy Promotion to fight Gerry Penalosa. In my eyes this was good news. After all, the fans have been crying for the rematch—so hopefully everything has finally fallen into place. Joe Hernandez, Ponce De Leon’s adviser, dropped a bomb on me.

I think it's realistic. Ponce has been barely getting past these bums. If I put everything he said, oh boy hahahahahaha

Come on, tell us something else he said.
Anf of course, it IS realistic, it's just incredibly rare to see such realistic-ness and honesty in boxing. It's usually all hype or excuses.

Exactly, how often do you hear something that honest in boxing?

so basically, he's saying:
my fighter isn't worthy of his belt and doesn't have the ability to defend it. so i'm going to bitch and moan and feast on weak competition so that he can keep it (and so a better fighter than Ponce will be denied the opportunity to win it).
this is why boxing is shit. and why promoters and managers ruin the sport.
if boxing were a real sport, Ponce wouldn't have any choice about who he fought. and we'd get to see who the best fighters in the world "really" are.

He said they want him to fight Penalosa, which is what just about everyone said after they fought last year...but that if they go to the Phillipines they want compensation (and deservingly so).
They also have a tough mandatory coming up with Juan Manuel Lopez.
Hernandez didn't say they were ducking either.
There's no reason Ponce De Leon should move up in weight to fight Linares other than money...and if they accepted the fight they'd simply be cashing out (as many fighters do) and he basically admitted that.

i like how hernandez calls linares a beast, considering the guy has one decent win over a shot oscar larios. de leon is 5 years older and has fought better competition thus far.
if he hadn't already made any progress, then he probably never will.

blah blah blah. Boxing is the most real sport and the fact that sanctioning bodies exist is the main reason we often do get to see who the best fighters are. Take away sanctioning bodies and it would be far worse.

I thought that was a little funny too. Linares is a great prospect, but hardly worthy of "beast" status, at least not yet
I like De Leon but he should stay away from Linares...but that is a strange statement from a manager..

I thought the title was a misprint. It's both refreshing and disturbing to see how candid the manager is.

where have i mentioned sanctioning bodies? !!!

It was critical to the point I was making. The best can and do face each other in boxing often. And when they do, it's often because sanctioning bodies have provided recognition to the challenger by ranking him or the champ by giving him recognition via their belt.

Me too. I might give him a swift beating for his troubles too.
The article or the subject of the article doesn't make any sense.
Who has Ponce barely been getting past?
Last 6 fights...
Escobedo: wins 7, 9, and 10 rounds.
Lopez: KO 5
Bautista: KO 1
Penalosa: the judges had him winning 12, 11, and 11.
Seeger: KO8
Looknongyangotoy: KO 1
and it keeps going...
Did his manager get him mixed up with Jhonny?
An ultimatum to move up in weight? Easy answer to that. Fuck off.

I see his manager's point. The kid is a mess.:dunno: He is strong, willful and the kid can crack, but his skills are lacking. I applaud the guys honesty... by recognizing the truth they can manage the kid properly and play to his strengths.

You just have to watch the kid fight to see the manger's point. He is also concerned that the kid takes a lot of punishment. In the lighter weight classes this is a real issue. Guys get killed fighting like Ponce does. They hang in there get hit in the head many many times, go into a coma.
This guy is trying to manage Ponce and clean him up while keeping his title run alive. His last fight he got hit a lot thats for sure.

Guys get killed because they are in the sport of boxing. Who reminds you of Ponce who has died in the ring? The only guy I can think of is Tomasello. That's one.
I agree that Ponce doesn't match up well with Linares, but who does? Penalosa rematch makes sense, but I don't think Ponce has to be afraid of Juanma. He may lose, but I'd pick Ponce.

He won with bullshit, but I thought he won as well. Penalosa landed the better shots but didn't win enough rounds.

Am I the only one who thought Ponce deserved the decision in the first fight? No, I thought he won too but he could certainly have lost if the fight had been held in Philippines. Ih guess his manager doesn't think he can fight a better fight than that against Penalosa so I can see his point, it's not a question of confidence, It's a question of realism. The risks are higher there so give him a higher reward, I'm in total agreement with that. I guess it's a pretty big fight over there so there's probably money to pay him correctly.

For real, its not like he is struggling with complete bums, for all his limitations he has has put together a half decent resume so far, Lopez would be another excelent addition...he is absolutely right to avoid Linares at 126 however, particularly if making 122 is not yet a problem

Hell, I would have given him a COMPREHENSIVE beating.
What the hell is the man thinking? I appreciate that honest is a rare commodity in boxing, but no manager worth a bean would sit there and say the sort of stuff Hernandez is coming out with. You would think he was talking about some kind of 10 fight, failed pro rather than a world champion.
What on earth does Ponce make of all of this, I wonder? :dunno:

Maybe he is trying to talk the guy into a situation where guys are happy to fight him and thus he gets fights he might not otherwise have gotten.

Boxing management is generally short sided. Most managers would see that this kid could make them a bit of gravy and then would be outfinessed in spectacular fashion due to his lack of refinements.
This manager is remarkable because he is really trying to do right by this kid. I don't know why more people don't see that frankly. Ponce has a family that loves him. He can't take a beating every fight at that weight class. The culmulative effect of the punches will harm him. He just gets hit too much.
Most managers, like Stewart go out of their way to protect their good name... For example, Taylor's lack of a jab is not STewart's fault! God forbid he should take ultimate responsability for seeing Jermaine through. This manager is trying to get Ponce wise to the big picture and in the big picture Ponce will get injured if every fight of his he takes lots of shots.
