I hope it works out for the best for you, LOK. Myself, I find they are a very useful training tool, but I am definitely gravitating towards bodyweight exercises and such on a regular basis. The chins and handstand pushups have been really kicking it up a notch for me.

they're quite interesting books, nothing advanced, but there's alot of stuff there I've never seen anywhere else and it's certainly a pretty unique approach to exercise if nothing else. I mix them up with weight training for supersets sometimes, and it's great to have kicking around in your head if your gonna be traveling etc. I reckon if you really got into them they could be very effective exercises.
Unfortunately the guys become a bit of a cult figure....and he litters irritating religious references through the boks which I personally could have done without.

Meh, I find weights useful. I see how it would be much more difficult to maintain muscle mass as the body starts to slow down though. It's definitely a good idea to slim down.

It's also much easier on the joints. Mainly though, doing the chins the way I am able to do them now is amazing. I can do 20 without thinking about it. I could never have done 20 before. Chins are a fun thing. I also think it might be easier to do the chins and handstand pushups while I'm dropping bodyfat and concentrating on my running. :dunno:

great, bodyweight exercises, with minimal use of equipment, boxes for jumps, bands, and medicine ball perhaps

lok and others:
gimme a simple, minimalist workout. i travel a lot, so want no equipment. something i can do in my apartment in the morning, wherever i am.
dont want to put on muscle, just want to get a bit fitter, lose a bit of weight. since im getting older and a little soggy around the middle... something simple, like 10 mins of press-ups and another exercise in the morning.
i was watching the movie 'marathon man' and roy scheider gets up in the morning and does press-ups. that kinda stuff...
my diet's ok. i do some cardio 1-2 times a week (football).

start with 3 sets of ten if you want. But then the next day do 3 sets of 11, then the next day 3 sets of 12, and so on. Progression is the key. You'll eventually burn out doing that though, so every 6 days reset by 2 days and every 6 weeks reset by 2 weeks then start adding again. 3 steps forward, 1 step back.
The only thing with so many push ups & nothing else is that you'll eventually get a muscle imbalance and possibly have some postural problems. That happened to me when I was a kid and did nothing but push ups for months on end. Not a good look. The only real bodyweight exercises you can do without a chin up bar are isometric. 1 is a lying superman, which is great for posture (google it), and another is a standing version of that which targets the upper back better. Look up and clasp your two hands together hard and pull them back whilst contracting your upper back HARD. Doing 3 sets of 5 reps of them along with your push ups will keep your back strong, which is important.
As LOK said, definitely do some bodyweight squats as well. Don't skip them, they'll help you at least as much as push ups. Mix up those 3/4 exercises along with a bit of cardio and you'll definitely tone up.

I've read somehwere they are like the best upper body excericise out there. I feel amazing after doing a day of chins
I've recently started doing a variation of chins that a friend told me a bout. HOlding both your legs 90 degrees forward while doing chins. Great for your abs.
I'm really getting into the abs too. I love doing situps.
I alternate on days though. Sometimes I rest a day or two because my body is hurting, to allow it to rest.

ok guys.
i'm 5 foot 11" and weigh 14 stone.
i came back from travelling about 9 months ago. when i returned i was 11 and a half stone and in really good shape. right up until i went travelling and during i was boxing.
since i came home i've been too busy and have done little exercise and ate way too much, hence my 2 and a half stone increase. my belly has gotten quite big and none of my shirts fit me round that area anymore, its quite depressing.
i decided it was time to get back in shape. i don't have time to box anymore at present, in fact not too much time to do anything.
what i have started doing over the last week is running, started 4 mile runs every night, but i need to do more explosive stuff like the boxing, and exercises to get lean and stay that way.
what do you recommend i do? press-ups, sit ups? just those with running will be ok? how many. i can do them in the morning and how many for quickish results without killing myself?
i can't do chin ups as i don't have a bar or a place for one.
please help?

pushups are the best thing in the world.. but if you really wanna gain size.. heavy flat and incline bench can not be beat..
sets of 4-6 reps intially.. then once you get strong.. I'd stay in the 10-15 rep range

I probably do 400 pushups a week. How many at once; how often do you recommend, I also do bridges. I got sick of taking pain killers so I am doing mad situps. Well, mad is relative. I do 500 3 times a week and on the bowflex. My lower back is rellay f'd up. I walk hunched over so I am trying to make my core strong. I really think if I build up my chest it will push my upper body back and straighten out my spine and remove the pain.

Bridging really REALLY helped my back..
400 a week is nothing if you want your chest to get big.. you really gotta bench..
if not and you wanna do it with pushups.. strive for 100 straight.. and at least 500 per day

I think building up your chest will just pull your shoulders further forward. Certainly thats what generally happens if the chest is strong relative to the back. You'd probably be better served doing barbell rows & chin ups. Also superman isometric holds are brilliant for posture as they contract every muscle in your body which keeps you in extension at once. And, as unconnected as the two things sound, posture issues are often related to overly tight hamstrings, so it might be worth trying stretching them.

Isolation exercises can't be beat.....your arms can give out before your chest does when benching. So by definition, benching can be beat. Low reps implies heavy weights, it's better to work down in reps....
10, 8, 6 reps in that order, increasing weight each set and getting your muscles prepared for the heavier weight to help prevent injury. I question your logic....

Low reps- heavy weights.. = stronger
higher reps.. 10-15 is more of a pump and promotes growth..
powerlifters are more in the low rep range, bodybuilders in higher reps..
I say Bench can not be beat becasue it is the staple exercise of chest..
isolation exercises are sissy IMO.. to build size and strength compond movements are key

10 8 6 covers that. You go for 15, you just contradicted yourself. You do 15 reps in sets, you miss just one or two days you lose more mass than you would with lower reps. Bench press uses many other muscle groups, you can say isolation is sissy.....but I was more built in my chest @ 19 than you probably were at any time of your life. So at least I have proof isolation works, especially by defintion it ISOLATES building that muscle.....which is exactly what someone here WANTS :slap:At the very least you MUST incorporate isolation exercises with good all around movements if you want to pinpoint a muscle group......body builders have been doing this since Arnold, it's really common sense and can't be argued against without talking out of your ass.

To develop a nice big chest, you do have to bench (whether it be barbell or dumbbells), but you also have to do isolation exercises.
If you pre-exhaust your pectorals with flyes or pec deck flyes or crossovers, then you don't have to worry about your arms giving out before your chest does.
Heavy dumbbell benchpresses done right after flyes will thicken up the ol' lower chest as will heavy incline dumbbell benchpresses done right after heavy dumbbell flyes for the upper chest.
Doing only isolation exercises is not a good idea. You need compound movements as well as isolation exercises or else you might develop a muscle imbalance and be more predisposed to injury.

I guess I am asking how long is too long? I mean, I used to stay at the kickboxing gym for 4-5 hour blocks. People thought I was a freak. If you take breaks, your body can recharge.
I am serious about building my chest. Not to be too graphic but I have no ass and no chest. My dna coded and I guess those two things never coded. My chest is sore a little. What is crazy is during the day I will bust out into a sweat. I must be doing something because I can feel my body burning fat, not that i HAVE much. I am built allot like Margarito or DLH. My chest just seems to never grow. I willing to really work hard just to prove scientists right. I have heard everyone say if you work the muscle it will grow. Well, if that were true I would look like Dolly Parton with Jon Holmes' cock. I know genetics are basically everything. I just want to make my chest as big as possible.
