ABOVE: Ricky Hatton29th May 2008 By Kevin Francis RICKY Hatton was last night tipped to follow in the footsteps of the great Oscar De La Hoya by becoming a knockout fight promoter.
I can reveal that ‘The Hitman’ will co-promote his first show at Birmingham’s Motorcycle Museum on September 4 under his newly-acquired banner of Ricky Hatton Promotions.
And Ken Purchase, whose Ringside Promotions organisation will jointly promote the dinner show with Hatton, predicted: “He can become the Oscar De La Hoya of British boxing. I have no doubt about it.”
Multi-world title holder De La Hoya owns Golden Boy Promotions which co-promoted Hatton’s IBO world light-welterweight title win over Juan Lazcano on Saturday.
And Purchase added: “Ricky is a great friend of Oscar who, like Ricky, is still boxing but also doing so very well at promoting.”

Hatton will have around 600 fans at the Birmingham date and also has a promotion lined up for Bristol later in the year as he seeks to get the OK from the British Board of Control to stage title fights.
Hatton first became involved with De La Hoya, with whom he has a three-fight deal, when he lost to Floyd Mayweather last December.
He said: “Some of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world are with Oscar.
“One of the reasons is because he’s a friend to them and there is an honesty there, which sometimes is rare with promoters. I want to take what they do in the US and bring it over here.
“Once I hang my gloves up I think the next best thing is to try to help fulfil the dreams of other fighters.
“I’m going to train fighters and manage fighters and give them as much happiness as I have had. I want to put as much back into the sport as I can.”
