Calzaghe plans return to 168!
WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has stated that his September 20 light heavyweight bout against Roy Jones Jr. will not be his last and that he plans to return to the super middleweight division following that fight. In a fax sent to WBO President Paco Valcarcel on British Boxing Board of Control letterhead dated July 16, 2008, and signed by Joe, the longtime 168lb champion wrote:
Dear Paco,
Further to our phone conversation of today's date I wish to remain as the WBO's Super Middleweight Champion. Following my proposed contest against Roy Jones Jnr. it is my intention to defend the WBO Super Middleweight Championship. I am proud to be a WBO Champion and thank you, as always, for the opportunities given to me in the past.
Kind regards,
JOE CALZAGHE CBE

After he retires Michael Vick's uncle for good he
s going to take target practice on Kelly Pavlik (if Pavlik is finished fighting welterweights by then). :fightme:

By then there'll be some 140-pounder Pavlik will have his sights set on.
I'm calling Pavlik-Pacquaio in the summer of '09.

Exactly how many welterweight has Pavlik fought? ZERO. The Williams fight hasn't even happened yet! You all act like he has been doing this forever when has hasn't done it at all yet. It's not like he's fighting small guys like Taylor did for years. He's fighting one welterweight, who is a titleholder who is a freakish giant for 147.
I guess you'd rather see him fight some fringe MW contender just because he's a MW? Williams is far better than anyone else mentioned other than Winky. The Abraham fight can't happen until Abraham beats Marquez.

I don't know about you but I'm excited about Pavlik taking on Pacquiao...it should be an entertaining scrap.

the problem is, the opponents mentioned before Williams were Rubio, who just recently moved up to MW after honestly going nowhere @ 154, and Mora, who's now a junior middleweight titlist.
Of the names floated around for his next fight, a grand total of none are natural middleweights. For such a scenario to follow a fight like Lockett, I can't blame people for being less than forgiving, even if to the point of exaggeration.
forget going to 168... he might be going to the MORGUE!!!

so calzaghe will go from an old roy jones to a roy jones wannabe (pascal, assuming he wins the eliminator)?

So Williams is indeed a much better fighter than others that were mentioned. I'm not saying I'm not a little upset about it, but I'm not going to start talking shit about Pavlik over it.
Who exactly IS available for Pavlik that is better than Williams? Pavlik would be fighting Calzaghe next had he accepted the fight. Or Winky if he didn't price himself out or Abraham if he didn't have a mandatory due. It's not like Pavlik is out there seeking these fringe contenders and "Small" guys. He has limited options at this point.
Now if this keeps up for more than the two fights then I will be pissed, but I'm givnig Pavlik the benifit of the doubt as of now.

Pascal is horrendous! I would pick Slappy by brutal KO, and he punches like a girl.

Well, in defense of pavlik, Winky's name was mentioned for one whole day! :partie:

He's afraid of Glen Johnson. Always has been. Always will be.

I don't think he wants a lot of light heavyweights...and neither does Roy...and neither did Hopkins.
They help each other out that way.

yeah, with Top Rank submitting a purse offer "in the neighborhood" of what they were looking to pay Mora.... They offered Mora a little over a million, and Wink a little under.
Though that said, Wink should've taken the damn offer, and if nothing else negotiate for at least purse parity in the rematch - not unlike how he secured the first Shane fight.

Seems a Pavlik fight may well still happen. If it does Joe regains my respect...I wont begrudge him his paycheck in that farce of a fight vs Jones if it's just a tune up for Pavlik!

Calzaghe-Jones isn't all that bad in that at least everyone else is fighting each other rather than standing in line for the same payday. Dawson-Tarver is in October, Diaconu will probably fight Glen Johnson... help me out, who else is relevant @ LHW these days?

Joe is gonna have no choice but to return back to 168 after he realizes what fighting a true 175lber is all about. Joe gets ko'd and runs back to 168 like Hatton ran back to 140lbs. I'll Holla 5000
joe will retire for sure.. forget going to 168.. he is going to wash cars!

Joe gets beat by a washed up Jones. Pavlik then ushers him into retirement while being fed by a tube.
