Calm down , Aaron you're not saying anything 99% of experts and fans aren't already.

Take a look around - only the staunchest Jones supporters are saying he'll win. Seriously, if he loses...who cares? Will anyone be shocked? I mean, is it worth calling out those who think he'll win like we're talking about some pick 'em bout? And how stupid will YOU look if (surprise!) he wins?

There are a half dozen people on this site who've claimed Roy will win.

Given we have maybe 15-20 active members thats much more sizable than 1% brother kenneth.

We can work on the details of any kind of terms, but I'll give 3-1 on sigtime/money bets.

I'll tell ya what - truthfully, I'm scared to bet. Not cuz I think he's gonna lose. But because I think I'm gonna jinx it.

For example, I'm a huge Giants (football fan). Bet on games throughout the year (friendly bets, money, etc.). Once we hit the playoffs, I didn't make one bet and we went all the way through. I attribute our success to my humility (how's that for irony?). So I don't wanna jinx my boy Roy either!

But either way, WE GOT THIS!

This doesn't make any sense. You bring up a point that I was wrong about, but it's completely unrelated. Of course we are all wrong here and there, how is that relevant now?

It just seems like a very odd comparison, Roy/Toney and Calzaghe/Jirov are completely different, no stylistic similiarities, what compelled you to make the comparison?

In all seriousness Mex, because I believe the fight will play out just like Jirov-Toney did.

As far as styles, like Jirov, Calzaghe will come forward, throw a lot of punches and attempt to impose his will on the supposedly weaker man.

Jones will gladly play the role of weaker man by laying on the ropes, where he won't have to use his shot legs. The ruling school of thought is that if Jones does this, he gets battered. I think the exact opposite.

But Kenneth - Jirov is shit. Seriously, I never rated him, he is not a patch on Calzaghe.

Compared to Calzaghe Jirov is slow, ponderous and most of all PREDICTABLE.

I honestly think calzaghe's biggest strength is his sheer unpredictability and ability to adapt.

And his loose, freestyle way of fighting is quite the opposite of Jirov's rigid Euro style.

There are more similarities with Roy and Toney, despite not being vry similar, Calzaghe and Jirov are really nothing alike.

Certainly Roy might try to do what you insinuate, counter off the ropes etc, he might even have some success, like Nard did in the first 3 rounds.

But ultimately Roy is far more shot than Toney was against Jirov, far more shot than Nard was against Joe, and moreover Joe is 10x the fighter than Jirov is.

Jirov is sh*t. But he wasn't until Toney landed 400 punches on him lol. He was actually pretty f*cking good. Ehh...whatever.

Compared to Calzaghe Jirov is slow, ponderous and most of all PREDICTABLE.

Well lets see how Calzaghe's "hand speed" looks against Roy's.

I honestly think calzaghe's biggest strength is his sheer unpredictability and ability to adapt.

Me too - on the ability to adapt. His sheer unpredictability can work against him.

And his loose, freestyle way of fighting is quite the opposite of Jirov's rigid Euro style.

Not when the other fighter is against the ropes and he's slapping away.

There are more similarities with Roy and Toney, despite not being vry similar, Calzaghe and Jirov are really nothing alike.

I think Roy boxes early...just like Toney did ;).

But ultimately Roy is far more shot than Toney was against Jirov, far more shot than Nard was against Joe, and moreover Joe is 10x the fighter than Jirov is.

What does shot mean? Jones still has the great hand speed, combinations, creativity. His legs have slowed considerably and reflexes too. But I don't think that will trouble him too much with the fight I'm describing here.

I agree with MWS here. Jirov was primarily a swarmer that never took a step back, no matter how many punches he had to take to get in position. At that point, he was trying to land his best punches, hooks to the body, which left his head unprotected. He was getting tagged repeatedly by an ancient Jorge Castro who was 3 weight class above his best weight. The same shit happened against about anyone he fought. His style played right into Toney's hands.

Calzaghe is way more versatile, and if you only see him as a swarmer, I'd suggest you to watch a few of his fights. Calzaghe moves a lot, even when he has his man on the ropes. He'll take steps back to get into position, will move slightly laterally to get a better angle, he varies the power and the speed of his flurries, and he's way harder to hit than Jirov, who's not much harder to hit than a punching bag once he decides to try to walk you down, which is always at about 1:30 of the first round, when it isn't during the ring walk.

Two totally different fighters. They're both southpaw, that's it.

I've seen plenty Calzaghe fights, dating back to 1998. In fact, I was a fan then. Not anymore as his nuthuggers disgust me.

Anyway, he'll swarm against Jones. Book it. Although he'd be wise to keep it in the center of the ring and force Jones to move. But he won't. He's just gonna lose to a smarter, more savvy fighter.

I tell ya, the only reason he's taking this fight is because he (like most) believes Jones is done. He better hope he's right. Because if he isn't, he'll be facing a reborn, extremely hungry great champion given one final chance at glory.

Most ironic post ever.

This sounds alot like certain disgusting nuthuggers who said Roy would bring back RJJ in the third Tarver fight.

Seriously who is a Calzaghe nuthugger? Where are these people claiming stupid shit about him as there are about a "reborn, extremely hungry great champion given one final chance at glory"

Do you think for one second Joe Calzaghe took this fight because he thinks "Roy is done, this will be easy"

Has he taken that same step in the past few years when he obliterated the perceived #1 threat (Lacy), then took on the next perceived #1 threat (Kessler), then moving up in weight to take on the recent conquerer of Wright and Tarver (Hopkins).

He convincingly beat all three, power puncher, boxer puncher, and cagey veteran. There is absolutely nothing Roy Jones has done in the past FIVE years to suggest this can even be competitive, but all the nuthuggers are clinging to some myth about what he can be in 2008.

Its hypocritical bullshit to be disgusted by "Calzaghe Nuthuggers" for even one fucking second. The only nuthuggers are people going gaga over wins over Anthony Hanshaw and Prince Badi Ajamu...or a washed up Trinidad.

How is this so hard to see?

First you say my post is ironic because of SOMEONE ELSE (someone who said RJJ was coming for Tarver??).

Then you said, do you really think Calzaghe took the fight because he's done? I pointed out that Calzaghe did in fact say - prior to signing the fight - that he would never fight Roy because he's done.

Then you spout Calzaghe's recent record for...reminder?

I shouldn't because I'm a confessed RJJ nuthugger myself - I bet Mex is ready to verbally beat me down if RJJ loses!

But yeah, I'm glad someone sees where I'm coming from. I'm not THAT crazy. And sure Calzaghe can win; he's supposed to! But sometimes you see something that gnaws at you.

I worry about his consistency too but his motivation is gonna be THROUGH THE ROOF. And he's really tinkered his style a lot. I'm VERY impressed. Of course, it's been against mid-level opposition but let's see how it looks on September 20th.

I had a chance to speak to Roy for an extended time last summer. And it was all Calzaghe, Calzaghe, Calzaghe. He's wanted this fight for a while. So did Hops - they both saw something. I'm just betting one of them isn't quite done yet. And it's the one no one thought.

This last bit is why I'm getting on you about this.

Hopkins beat Tarver and Winky, then got soundly beaten by Calzaghe.

Roy beat Trinidad, Ajamu, and Hanshaw, and couldn't KO any of them.

How can the guy beating fringe top 15 fighters be "not done yet" compared to the lineal Lt. Heavyweight champion?

Hopkins has been the better fighter for the last 5 years. Hopkins had beaten the better people and looked better doing so. And he got beaten like he hadn't been by Calzaghe in his last fight.

Roy has objectively done NOTHING to suggest this fight with Joe will be competitive.

What's the matter? Don't wanna discuss werewolfs, aliens and Calzaghe nuthuggers anymore?

How about you transplanting what you think into what Calzaghe thinks?

ANYWAY...

I really don't wanna go through the list of fighters who had objectively done NOTHING to suggest a bout would be competitive except...be great. That list is long, my friend.

Shot means he looks like a shell of his former self, and got KTFO and dominated by guys that he would hammered in his prime.

He's not so shot that he loses to bums no, but he is very washed up to be sure.

Well if it stands that he is an all-time great and was pretty much unbeatbable in his prime, he may settle for just being a "good to pretty good" fighter now. I think if people objectively looked at him now (without comparing him to the old Roy), they'd see that.

But getting back to your point, he got KTFO because he never adjusted. Toney rebuilt himself. Hopkins rebuilt himself. Jones never did...mainly because he never had to. But he has.

And yes, he's been KTFO. And then came back to fight Tarver a third time. Honestly...did he look shot? Or gun-shy? Because when he let his hands go, Tarver looked like an amateur.

Furthermore, in a complete 180 from the first two fights, Jones' best moments came when he was against the ropes. He's spent plenty of time working on it and continues to do so in preparation for this bout.

I hear ya though. He just may be shot. And I don't think Calzaghe would've taken this fight if he thought he wasn't. Sh*t, he didn't dream of coming to the US when he was a nobody. But if Jones has some gas in the tank..given the right game plan, his ring savvy and motivation, it could get ugly for Mr. Joe C. Somehow, I don't think Roy takes his foot off the gas if he has him hurt.

Very good post dawg and I agree 100 percent. This fight is gonna be ugly and a very painful exerience for the Calzaghe fans as well as for the non-RJ believers. I'll Holla 5000

OK, what about this sig:

"ROY JONES JR. HAS NEVER BEEN ANY GOOD. FLASHY? YES, BUT HE'S ALWAYS BEEN HORSE MANURE AND GOT BEATEN BY 2 GUYS WHO WERE NOT AFRAID OF HIM. GLENN JOHNSON AND ANTONIO TARVER ARE ROY'S DADDIES, AND JOE CALZAGHE IS WELCOME TO THE FAMILY."

But... no matter..

Calzaga is made to order for Roy and Roy will embarrass him send his Welch ass back to get a job in Germany as a philosophical janitor.. Kinda like Eddie quoting niche in "coming to America"

Joe will talk about the good ole days...

I hope he does not get seriously hurt in the fight

Get ready for some welching on behalf of planet roid. Actually, I have won 2 suicide bets. Joe King was the original death welcher.

I&I fagged out on his suicide bet as well. But its against the rules to call him a cowardly, balding, welching faggot on the general forum. Unfortunately.

"That's a big left to the body and Calzaghe didn't like it....here we go!"

You have a point, I picked the Patriots in the fightbeat pool just so I could win in Vegas betting the Giants.

LOK, BigDawg, Kenneth, Mister REED et al- I will take a sig or AV bet with any of you if you choose to pick this version of Jones over Calzaghe. I'll even match the terms offered by Rubio: I'll give you 2-1 against in terms of length of sig/AV.

i'm not a sports psychologist, but i highly doubt that calzaghe is scared.

history has shown, calzaghe has postponed several of his fights in the past including the kessler fight which he comfortably won.

jones is shot to shit and calzaghe will make the highest purse of his career.

not sure if it's the warren law suit that's holding him back or he didnt like the date of the fight taking place. or maybe he really did injure his hand.

REED:hammert:

Utter, utter, shit...

Calzaghe is sooooooooooooooo much better than this version of RJJ it's an absolute DISGRACE that he is even fighting Jones.

Jones is completely and utterly shot. As in cannonball shot...

I STILL cannot believe that there are people talking about this fight as if it is a live contest. Hell, lets get Ali out of retirement and see if he fancies a shot of Wlad- I've always been a fan and in his prime he would have waxed Wlad, so now, miles and miles after his prime has gone, he still has a shot because, well, he is Ali...

Mister REED, stop hiding behind this rhetoric and put your sig/AV where your mouth is. I'll give you 2-1 in terms of time, just as I have given BIGDAWG.

No, I never picked Jones to lose to the grappling man.

A death bet on a loss to Tarver, however, was too good to pass up. If there are archives then this can be confirmed. Be a man and shoot yourself, or, run 5 feet and die of a heart attack.
