Dominic Salcido on Vicente Escobedo: "he’s not some pooh-butt fighter"

That's high praise for an upcoming opponent.

This is a really good match-up for Telefutura on 9/26.

Escobedo was a hot name four years ago, but he has to prove his career hasn't already plateaued. Meanwhile, it's a big step up fight for Salcido against his best opponent to-date.

Since they're both in the mid-20's, with pro careers that started only a year and a half a part, and with only 1 loss between them, it's hard to call it a cross-roads fight.

But it sorta feels like that.

Two losses for Escobedo and he'll get written off. But while he's younger, Salcido's actually been a pro longer, and this will be a lot of people's first look at him.

He's very honest. I read this earlier in Dougie's SoCal notebook. I don't know anything about Salcido, but after reading his quotes, I'm rooting for him!

Very little, and it's hard to judge him based off that and his competition level.

He looks like a solid fighter, relatively quick hands, solid technique, doesn't have a great jab and doesn't always use it as a weapon (measures with it), but not a bad array of punches outside of that. Not sure of his power or his chin. Has some waist/upper body movement on defense, uses some footwork, though sometimes it looks flashier than the result (sortal ike Malignaggi in that regard).

It will be an interesting fight. Escobedo will never be a great fighter. He just gets hit too much, is too easily countered, and his head is just too still. His success will depend on how tough he turns out to be and how well he can make that a factor in his fights...and from what I've seen he is a pretty tough fighter. Even when he was knocked down against Jiminez, I thought he regrouped and won the rest of the round.

Both still have a lot of unknowns about them though.
