View Full Version : Running
Ive just started back training, I'm running at 6 in morning before work.
Starting of with a mile, how far should I be running in a few weeks?

Ive always preferred setting a set distance like a mile and then progressively trying to beat my time. Way more effective and fun!:hammert: Then once you run a mile in a time your happy with, say 6 minutes, or whatever your target is, you could add distance a little at a time, if you wanted, while trying to maintain the pace. No point working up to running 5 miles if your doing it at an old granny pace, IMO.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines, plus I start work at 7 so need to get home showered and out the door asap.
I ran it this morning in about 12 mins. Obviously a slow pace but I was happy enough considering I was injured for so long. I would be confident in cutting that in half in no time.
I gotta agree..
start with the mile.. do it faster and faster..
intensity is better than distance for sure

Yeah, start off easy. It all depends on your bodytype, height, and such. I'm 5ft7 with relatively short legs, so I'm not likely to set any world records. I will, however, improve a great deal if I keep it up. A mile is good to start off with. That's almost a walking pace that you're doing.
What's your height, weight, etc etc?
Who gives a sh*t??!?!?! Don't worry about no stupid intensity and improvements. What you need to worry about is CONTINUING to get the f*ck up at 6am in the morning to do this sh*t, even if it's half a mile or just walking a mile.
The fact that your body is working and functioning to the point of being able to get up early and do a run will become a reward in itself as you feel better.
The one problem you'll run into is how long you'll be able to keep this up. Most people quit after a while from injuries, laziness, lack of results, etc.
You should just try doing this maybe two times a week at best. Why try to start off at the top? Why try to worry so soon about how many miles and sh*t you can run when you haven't really done sh*t for most of your life?
And furthermore, what makes you think you're going to be able to continue waking up at 6am to do this sh*t if you don't have any real goal in mind.
If you want to motivate yourself and strive to acheive something, don't try going straight to the top with all the intensity and increased miles so quickly. Just try repeating this early morning walk/run for maybe once or twice a week and then let it progress from there.
Don't go taking advice from LOK or Buddy. They have their own reasons for doing the sh*t they do. You worry about yourself and how you want to do things. Don't take their advice about increasing your workload because you've been injured and all that's gonna happen is you'll just aggravate your injuries and you'll quit.
If you want to acheive a goal or find motivation to keep this up, pick up a muscle/fitness magazine and strive to look like somebody in there, or get your wife to promise you that she'll suck your dick for every 3lbs you lose.
She'll probably do it anyway but abstince may work better in this case.

Hanzy,
He was asking for advice. :dunno:
Seeing as how you don't run, you shouldn't be trying to give advice. Furthermore, LOK and I are hardly elite athletes, so he may get some benefit from our experience. If he wants advice on how to eat Big Macs one-handed on the couch or create photoshops, he can come to you. If he wants to work out, he can easily come to us. There's nothing wrong with him wanting to get advice and set goals.http://www.fightbeat.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

Why pass judgement? I DO run. Begrudgingly, I run. 30 minutes treadmill, and 4000m on the Rowing Machine. I don't get off the Rowing Machine until I've done 4000m.
Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it!:flip:

LOL
the one thing I will agree with here is not to start too fast..
most people start fast give up fast..
you know.. I smoked years ago... I smoked for 10 years..
one day I decided I didn't want to anymore and started running.. I never smoked again
I tell people that the easy way to give up smoking is to take up running cuz you can't do both really..
trouble is 95% of people will quit running not quit smoking..
if you REALLY REALLY want it.. it's easy..

Thanks for the advice guys
and for Hanz,
I do have a goal and I have not been sitting on my ass all my life. I've been playing sports all my life. I injured my pelvis about a year ago that resulted in ligament and muscle strain all down my left leg making it painful to even sit.
Now I want to get myself back in shape hockey season starts in 2 months.
I asked for advice on running as I never ran before and wanted to make sure I wasn't over doing it.
My time was pretty slow but Ill be happy at that speed for the first 4-5 sessions. Getting up that early does work your body well.

I hear ya about the hockey. I will be playing floor hockey once a week and we don't have subs, so we run back and forth for over an hour. That requires cardio, specifically windsprints. I am getting them done.
Also today I ran 10k. Not bad for an old man.

Yeah I'm playing ice hockey, I was back on the ice for the first time last week. Lets just say I have a long way to go before the league starts.

yeah.. Listen to the 5 foot 300lb guy who lives on McDonalds:laughing:
McDonald's is the source of my power! That's why I've never been sick or had an injury. My back is strong, no problems there. My knees are made of steel, no problems there either. All the while, I laugh at my family who all do their exercise and following healthy diets and sh*t and still get sick while I'm chomping on a cheese burger and laughing.
You should see my old man. He's about 5'8 155lbs. He gets up at 7am every morning and runs 2 laps around the lake. Then comes home and drinks a big cup of that fruit-drink stuff that he makes in the blender. And he STILL gets sick. What a bitch! They ain't rock solid tough like me.
LOK, isn't your body failing you too? I heard you got a seriously jacked up knee and back. Isn't your jacked up knee the reason you had to pull out of giving Royce Gracie a beatdown some years ago?

Besides, who gives a crap about Floor Hockey? Bitch sport!

What about your knees and back? You were saying on here a little while back that your back gave you trouble which is why you could't do more back strengthning exercises like deadlifts, etc? And that your knee was hurting.

when is "a little while ago" ?
I jacked up my back years ago.. YEARS ago.. ,but it is fine now.. my knees are in great shape
I do believe that heavy leg extensions put too much pressure on the knee.. I would not do them and heavy ass deadlifting probably not real good either IMO

Deadlifting is a whole body exercise but mostly a great back strengthener. It's a good exercise for people who do a lot of lifting like at UPS or furniture movers. I read in Muscle & Fitness that it's the core exercise for strength training. Really kills. Buddy and I both do it. Buddy can do over 500lbs which is wicked!

I hear you Hanzy.. I just personally don't like it
it no doubt is a core.. along with heavy squats which I no longer do either

Hanzy, when I need advice on a pie-eating contest, you may post. Until then, do not post when the rest of us, who actually exercise, are discussing exercise matters. Heed your betters and pay homage.
And actually a lot of people would say that windsprints and shuttleruns are great for hockey.
AND I know I don't NEED to run 10k. I want to be able to, and quickly. If I only did what I had to do, I would never run. :kick:

Which is almost 500lbs using the 1 rep max calculator. 425 x 6 = 494lbs
So you could probably do 500 for a rep if you tried.

How talk are you, Mustard? That's a pretty good pace. 3 miles in or around 26 minutes.I'm 6'3" and currently weight 215lb.
BTW, when I clocked 26 minutes, the conditions were perfect: 6.00pm, zero wind, warm temperature and I'd eaten properly an hour beforehand and warmed-up/stretched. I got into a really good groove.
Sometimes, I go running when I haven't eaten for about 5 hours and that can be tough when the body starts using up stored energy/fat.
My normal time when I don't push it is around 27-28 minutes so I want shave 60-90 seconds off that.
I'm going again in about 3 hours and will post the time.
I thought you said yoiu were quite overweight and unfit?
Or have you made an effort to change your existing lifestyle?
I'm fat and unfit but I was always active and played every sport. Just that I was fat. But I'm still able to run. It's not like I'm bedridden.
The problem with running is that it eats the muscle before anything else, and then it goes for fat. Not the other way around.
That calculator doesn't account for people who have better endurance fibres than raw strength fibres. Essentially, I know I wouldn't be able to get more than 450. That's just the way it is.
That doesn't make any sense. If you can do 425 x 6 then you can do a much heavier weight than 425 for 1 rep. It's strength more than endurance. Every rep you do gets tougher and tougher and hence it's your strength that's keeping you going, not just endurance. I bet you your own life that you could put up over 480 for 1 rep. Believe in yourself! :kidcool:

it is a decieving fact Hanzy..
a lot of body builders are so againest running.. they like to walk at a snails pace on an incline treadmill..
funny thing is.. for as many hours a week they put in the gym.. these guys are in terrible shape really.. I knew bodybuilders that looked great but would pass out if they had to RUN a mile..
they spread this "running burns muscle"
when really "Sprinting" can help BUILD muscle as it raises your growth hormone and other things in your body more than almost any other exercise.. look at sprinters.. they are chiseled where as long distance runners look soft

But sprinting and running are two different things. On this forum, everybody is talking about running 3-5 miles every day. Look at Buddy Rydell, he's given up his bodybuilding to now focus more on running and therefore he's going to lose all the strength he's gained after years of weight lifting in exchange for looking leaner and being faster. Which is good IMO. But you have to give up 1 for the other. Bodybuilders, at least professional bodybuilders have to do what they do for the sake of competitions. They don't run because running serves no purpose in their sport.

I agree here Hanzy..
although I think the worry of "losing muscle" on a 3 mile run is very un-warented.. and I think it's sad that guys spend their life in a gym and if they had to run to save their life they couldn't.. these guys live in the gym and are not really "healthy"

True and also, even if they don't want to run, they can still do other things like the stair climber, exercise bike, or rowing machine. Rowing machine is my favourite. I kick all sorts of ass on there. I go all out as much as I can and we try to race to see who can clear 2000m first. We put up money bets too just for added motivation.
Even when you're about to die on there, you still have to keep it up because it's such a tight race with like 4-5 guys all trying to win.

I ran at least 5 miles today, and I'm just under 200lbs at 5ft7. I'm not in danger of losing my muscle...particularly when I'm doing 70 chins and 90 HSPU a day now.
I'm only working up to long distance so I can beat my high school totals. Soon I'm going to work in mile training, and I already do windsprints. As a matter of fact, I might have to cut my long distance stuff down to 2-3 days a week because my hip tendons and ligaments are getting majorly sore and I just can't run effectively everyday.
I might start doing a weekly distance run, and then mix it up with much faster stuff.

Back bridge, ,back bridge, back bridge!
it will REALLY help your hip flexors.. it stretches them like nothing else
I'll probably do some tonight. I gotta stretch because I'm just getting too inflexible.

man.. I swear by the bridging.. I think it really does the body wonders!

Does running suck muscle first or not?
Your Body will only burn muscle it has no choice.
The Main source of energy to the body is a chemical Called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).
This chemical is synthesised from the things we eat.
The order in which we burn things to make ATP is -
Carbohydrates, such as glucose.(this is the most effective form)
When the carbs have run out your body will burn fat (breaking triglycerides to fatty acids and glycerol) , from your food and fat reserves.
if you do get to the stage where you do not have enough fat your body will use protein(taken from muscles)
this is very dangerous and painful.
when muscle tissue is broken down it releases ammonia into our blood which results in pain(which could be mistaken for cramp) and if the ammonia is allowed to build up by extreme training it can result in sickness.

When burning bodyfat, you will likely lose some muscle. It happens but not to a great extent unless you are very consistently overtraining. There's a reason why the cardio machines often have a heartrate range listed as the fatburning zone. Even if you go higher than this zone, you will likely keep most of your muscle.
Look at sprinters and rugby players. They get it done in windsprints and they hardly lose muscle as a result. For that matter, NBA basketball players are built like tanks, and they run back and forth for hours a day.
Bottom line: saying that running burns muscle first is horseshit. If it happened that way, you'd see runners with no muscle and some fat when the opposite is unfailingly true.
Even long distance or marathon runners have some muscle and low fat, but not nearly as much as sprinters because sprinters need to explode with powerful muscle contractions, which build muscle.

This is like the gayest thing in the world to worry about.. lol
sure bodybuilders who eat perfectly clean to be perfectly lean.. don't wanna run.. they have no real carbs in them to burn so they could burn/lose muscle
for general people.. this is just not a concern

Speaking of running, there are some weird pains and injuries you can get from running for a long time. Friction burns on the insides of your legs from running is one. Bleeding nipples from your shirt rubbing on your chest for over an hour is another one.
I ran over 10km at lunchtime, and when I took my shirt off, my nipples were bleeding down my chest and stomach. Apparently I have to either put bandages on them or vaseline. I had worn a white dress shirt to the gym, but I had to wear a spare t-shirt afterwards because I couldn't have a bloody shirt going back to work.
It's no joke. It's funny, but it really hurts.

it is common practice for marathoners to put vasoline on the nipples

That's cool. I'm around 200 (just under actually). I'm starting to look a bit skinny compared to my former massively-muscled goodness.
I figure by spring I'll be 180 or so without an ounce of fat on me. That'll be the lightest I've been in 12-13 years, not counting 3 or 4 years ago when I went down to 169, but shot right back up after I started lifting weights again.
This time I'm lifting weights and doing the cardio. I hit the weights this morning from 6am-7am before I made it into work actually. my limbs feel a bit tired, but I am toning up bigtime! :bears:

BTW, Massa, I now run 10k or more three times a week, and I do lighter stuff in between along with circuit training like I did this morning.
LOK and I started off by running really short distances each day, and then gradually building up. That way your joints get a chance to heal and toughen up. I might do a mile today, but I did over 10km yesterday. I'm gonna add 5 minutes a week to my running and eventually get up to doing a half marathon. Who knows? I might even do a marathon next year just to try it out. I have no illusions about being worldclass or anything, but I am now running the 8k faster than I did in high school when I took Most Improved for cross-country running.
Mass I gotta agree with Buddy that this is the way to go.. start off with short distances but do it consistantly.. let your joints adapt

for the past 3 weeks i been running up and down a mountain, its only 2.4 miles 1.2 up and 1.2 down, even though its tremendously steep, i did it twice yesterday for the first time. i think thats what im going to start doing about 5 days a week.

Strangely enough, I think it's a good idea to be more careful on your way down than on your way up, Mass. On the way down, it's easier to build up speed and twist your ankle or pop your knee. Good luck and have fun although it's likely to be tough at first.
I don't have any mountains right nearby, but that sounds like a great idea.

no doubt that going down is harder and more dangerous than up..
just be careful Mass..
if it's too steep it would even be good to sprint/run up and briskly walk down..
if you are tubby and try running down you might jack up your knee

Secondly, I wouldn't start off with more than the 5 miles you already did. Even on a track, it gets hard on the knees.

5 miles is a lot man..
seriously.. if you can do 5 miles 3 times a week and do it for week after week you WILL see a difference, also doing it on the track is nice.. if it's the rubberized surface that is so nice on your legs and joints..

How expensive are the trainers you guys use? I really hate having to spend relying on ANY excess equipment to work out but my shins hurt if I run more than 2 days running ATM. Worth spending extra on 'good' running shoes?

shoes don't matter much I'd say. I wear some $8.99 ben wallace brand shoes and they are fine. I run five to six miles a day, five days a week.

Ah, and how much do you weigh? I don't know if I asked this before.
5ft1, eh? Your legs must be moving like crazy. You must not weigh too too much to be able to sustain that pace all the way through, or you must have a long stride. I'm gonna have to work to get down to that time per mile. Pretty impressive actually! :bears:
