Either I misunderstood the measuring places (most likely) or the count is way off. Aren't waist and Iliac pretty much the same?

Nah, waist is round your belly button and illiac is just round the jut of your hip bones. Hips is measured round the widest part of your ass.

The weird thing is that I've lost over 10lbs in the past month or so from ropeclimbing and circuit training. I'm actually a bit under the weather right now with a wicked cold, but I've probably never been stronger overall in my life.

Even Shane Mosley felt this way before the Floyd match. Fact is, 38 is long past your physical prime whether you feel stronger or not. You're already deteriorated in your keen senses, reflexes and overall body strength.

Which World's Strongest Men were still winning titles at age 38? They were way past their best in their late 30s. Everything diminishes by age 38, no matter the sport you play. You lose a bit of everything including speed, reflexes and hand-eye and you get a little slower in the mind.

Unless, of course, you do a lot of work that involves research and analysis.

And, you have to keep in mind that people who train frequently continue to gain longer than those who don't. Look at Fred Hatfield for example.

Loads of top powerlifters are still near the top in their late 30s. Dont know anything about strongman, bet its the same. Britains strongest man competition is usually dominated by guys WELL into their 30s though.

You gotta factor in injuries in these competitions too. It isn't so much age that cuts allot of these guys careers short its the accumulation of injuries. An injury free 38 year old is just as STRONG as an injury free 28 year old, assuming training etc. And even after that the decline isn't THAT great....it might be enough to make the hair of difference that matters at the elite level but it's not this horrendous dramatic decline. Put it this way, id bet you're stronger than 98% of people my age, including me and if you keep training will still be in 10 years.

I mean like you said, Fred Hatfield broke the ALL TIME squat record aged 45. He was still totalling close to 2000 into his 50s, ffs. Puny old codger.

Hut*Hut
05-17-2010, 08:40 AM
Oh and another thing about Hatfield - he squatted pretty close stance, without much help from a suit AT ALL. I'm not sure if it was raw per se but there was certainly no 4 foot wide stance, waddling the bar off the monolift and bouncing it off a triple ply steel suit. In real strength terms that might well have been the strongest squat of all time to this day.

Up to 201 and down to 15%. Waist down from about 34 to under 33. Somehow....because my trainings been lax. Somewhat mysterious. Started logging my eating at fitday about a month ago, so it really must have helped beef up/clean up my diet a bit.

By FAR the biggest my skinny ass has ever been, felt very weird seeing a '2' when the digital scale weight came up. I was 165 this time last year, which is about my natural weight or even slightly higher since I was kinda training at that point.

I started with the intention/expectation that'd I'd gain a fair amount of fat with such rapid weight gain but in all honesty it's been less than expected and it'll come off fast when I feel like getting rid of it. Im a bit soft with my shirt off but there's certainly no 'belly'.

Somebody who doesn't run but yet goes 1.6 miles in 9 mins is complete bullsh*t. If you don't run, you wouldn't even be able to run a mile, let alone run 1.6 miles in only 9 minutes on roads and up and down hills.

I used to run a wee course around my neighbourhood about once a fortnight one summer. It came out on 'map my run' to be just over 1.6 miles. My best time was a hair over 9m. I averaged allot lower than that though. Maybe 'map my run' got the distance wrong but since I have no respect for distance runners whatsoever as Ive said again and again on this board it's hardly something I'd give internet stats about. Comes out to like 5:40 a mile or something on my one best day, hardly Kenyan stuff.

Anyway, Google says top runners do the 5k in 12 minutes - 20m seems like a respectable target to shoot for to me.

EDIT - Any non fat person can run a fucking mile. I doubt I know anyone my age who couldn't run a single mile. Get real.

I am getting real. I've seen what seem like physically fit guys and girls on treadmills who stop before even reaching the mile. The fact is, if your body isn't pre-conditioned to doing even moderate long distance running over even a half mile, then you ain't gonna run the full mile whether you're skinny or not, especially not in 9 minutes on the roads and hills.
If you're saying that you ran before then that's different. If you're saying that you never ever ran before in your life and then one day just got up out of bed and ran 1.6 miles in 9 minutes through roads and hills, then you're a f*cking bullsh*tter!
If you never ran, you ain't gonna run the f*cking mile through the roads without your heart exploding. Just like some random skinny little sh*t who's never benched in his life comes on here and claims he pressed 200lbs in his first ever attempt on the bench press. It's complete crap! You have to build up to those types of stats unless you're a f*cking genetic freak.
I know you're a bullsh*tter Hut. You're lying when you say you don't run. You definitely run. Ain't no motherf*cker who's never run before in his life gonna be running the roads and hills for 1.6 miles in under 9 minutes in his first go. It's not happening. It takes many months of practice to even get to that level.
Only a very small percentage of people can even run 1.5 miles in under 10 minutes on a treadmill even with tremendous training. And you're saying you can do 1.6 miles in 9 minutes on the road without ever even running in your life.:lol: Whatever!
Another typical FightBeat bullsh*tter!:atu:

A mile in under 6 minutes is pretty good. In our phys ed class, only one person could do it, but we didn't really have any notice. I'm not that tall, about 5ft7, but a taller person could definitely do it in under 6 minutes.

It depends on leg length, bodyweight, and leg strength. Hutster trains his legs regularly.

Keep in mind that Hanzy claims to be 5ft2 and 300lbs. He couldn't run a mile but that doesn't mean others couldn't.

I think the fastest I ever did a mile was 6 minutes 20 seconds at around my current bodyweight, but I was frigging dying. If the weight is spread out more on a frame and you can take longer strides, you're definitely gonna break 6 minutes.

I can run 2 miles very easily. I can do it because I've trained to do it after 3 years. I didn't do 2 miles out of the blue without ever having done it. My point is, Hut claims he ran the roads and hills for a distance of 1.6 miles at under 9 minutes WITHOUT ever having done any kind of cardio exercise before. And I'm saying, unless you're some genetic f*cking freak, nobody out of the blue is going to run that distance at that kind of time. That kind of time would put him at the elite level of fitness. And you can't attain that level without a lot of f*cking training. And he claims he doesn't run which is what I'm calling him out on.

Yes, I know there are people out there who can do it but not a f*cking 200lb+ guy who's never even trained himself to do it. You're carrying a f*ckload of mass on you at that weight and then running 1.6 miles in under 9 minutes on the road which in itself would put him at the very top level of physical fitness WITHOUT actually even working up to that point from years of running. He didn't say "WITHOUT ever having done any kind of cardio exercise before". He said he doesn't run, which I took to mean he doesn't run regularly. Everyone has run at one time or another. Some do it for primary school gym class or track and field, some in high school, and some for a kick to see how good they can get.

I took it to mean it's something he doesn't usually do. He didn't say that he had never run before. I think he meant it's not his focus but he was still able to do it. How old are you, Hanzy? I'd be doing that in more like 50 minutes.

You seem to read negative things into what people say, and he wasn't talking to you from what I saw until you engaged him and started digging at him.

I'm 44. And I don't care if Hut was talking to me or not. He made a claim that he can do 1.6 miles in 9 minutes on the roads and hills without being a runner and I called bullsh*t. There could be young guys visiting this thread and reading that crap and thinking that they need to be able to run 1.6 miles in 9 minutes and they could end up injuring themselves while trying. You people need to be careful with the kind of bullsh*t you post up here.

Did you or did you not run before achieving that time? That's what I want to know. If you never ran before and just got up one day and ran 1.6 miles in 9:31, I would like to know. I'm not saying you can't run it. I'm saying you're not going to run that distance and time without ever having run before.

Of course I'd run, I didn't spend my childhood bed ridden or chained up in a basement being fed fish heads. But I wasn't and had never been in any concerted training for running. That's what I meant. Gatti has a specific event he can train for every day, he can probably expect to do better.

But to clarify - I was wrong about 9 minutes, it was 9:31 and my average time was about 10:10. 9:31 was clearly me really pushing the envelope and I couldn't have kept that pace up for twice that long. So I think, considering Gatti has some time to train towards it, whereas I wasn't in any concerted running training at the time, just doing it now and then, something like 20m probably stands as an ambitious but doable target, IF he has a similar natural ability to me (ie painfully average but I was tall and skinny).

Buddy Rydell
06-13-2010, 10:09 PM
I'd forgotten that you were taller and rather on the thin side before, Hutster.

for one, I do not have shin splints

2) i do NOT have "jacked up knees"

Because you're over 200lbs LOK. You've got completely the wrong body type for running, especially running 6 min/miles for 30 minutes. If you're gonna be running that long in that short a time, you'd be like those ethiopian distance runners who don't look like they've eaten in years.

Zydrunas Savickas is 34.
Pudzianowski is 33.
Phil Pfister is 40.

These are the 3 oldest competitors and winners in the past 3 years. Looks like Hanzy was right. If I was going to win it, I should have won it back then.

The strongman competition isn't necessarily all about strength though too. A lot of it is explosiveness, which of course deteriorates with age.

It's a waste of time. I read about people from the old days who lived off the land and never did exercise or anything, and they lived well into their 80s and 90s. All this "Get Fit" sh*t is a scam, it's just a way for pharmacists, doctors and trainers and them to get rich, by forcing people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. People are still living into old age just fine without exercise. These doctors and trainers and authors want you to buy all that exercise equipment, all those drugs and powders and stuff and buy their Get Fit books and videos. It's how they make money.
Americans been living fine all these years. Live and let live.

If you are happy and love your life then you will exercise to live long. If you hate your life and have a crappy job and a sh*tty family and friends, then you'll probably not care if you die.
I see a lot of angry miserable people out there. People who don't have the money to enjoy their lives. People who can't get vacation time to get away from the 9 to 5 grind.
I'm not making excuses for people who don't exercise but I'm saying that not everybody values life.

isn't that kinda sad Hanzy?

it kinda makes me sick.. to see people just complaining and being miserable...
people who are miserable sometimes have a view on things as if the world revolves around them. If you put so SO SO much weight in how YOU are involved in everything.. people just have crazy ideas of their place

The world is spinning, grass is growing and life is all around weather people like or dislike is really not making any difference, things are just happening naturally and people act as if it is a plot for them to play in.. lol and it was all about them.

i know some people too that are pretty fat and happy but active. I think active is the key, lazy bums who eat garbage.. are not going to feel good that's just the fact

You don't look like a 200 pounder in that pic you posted.

I lost about 25lb+ since then. I was getting fat, experimenting with an ill fated 'squats and milk' project. During last summer I was actually over 200lb for a bit but my waist was creeping over 35".

In all honesty in retrospect my bodyfat % was optimistic. I have a naturally slight waist so when I put my measurements into estimate programs like Casey Butt's (which is still useful) it always comes back a couple % too low.

In the pick I posted I was about 180, Im about 175 now. Im 6'1+. Bf% probably a realistic 11-12 now.

It had been something I'd wanted to try for a while so I dont regret going for it, at least I know know it doesn't work for me. If I'd been 15 instead of 25, or if I'd really worked as hard as I might of who knows. It works for allot of people. I think I was just too insecure/vain to handle the fat gains. Im naturally very skinny. I have like 6.25" wrists.......Vernon Forrest shaped, naturally now, just about Bernard Hopkins shaped  though without B-Hops 17" neck unfortunately. That'd be good.
