aren't most guys here boxing fans too? i dont understand this boxing vs. mma talk. i like both sports for what they are. shit, i even like high school, college, freestyle/greco wrestling.

at the end of the day, i like seeing top notch talent pitted against another top notch foe. boxing and mma provide both a few times a year.

Yeah and boxing fans are notorious for calling some boxers bums but on the MMA board its considered an act of hate to call a bum a bum. Godfather was about to cry at one point on this thread.

It should, considering it's been around longer and this is a boxing forum.

Not to mention MMA wasn't that big during the prime of this forum.

So...fail.

Yes, that's my point. This is a boxing forum.

Dude, I am a huge boxing fan. I've watched fights since Ali was still Clay. And I love the fact that both sports can co exist.

The problem is there are a few boxing fans that must feel threatened by the success of MMA and the UFC in particular. They never miss an opportunity to come in here and trash the sport.

I would be equally pissed if some clown was on the General Forum mindlessly trashing boxing. Why do it?

I can't wait for Cain-Lesnar. Cain may not hit as hard as Carwin but he throws very straight and sharp punches. But Lesnar proved he's a tough guy to stop. Cain will have his hands full. And he doesn't want to end up on his back even once.

Another great fight.

My only question with that fight is..

1: Cain is a lot smaller than both Carwin and Lesnar, that's a big factor.
2: Cain had trouble stopping Big Bum Rothwell and couldn't stop Kongo despite punching them 1,000 times. If Carwin couldn't stop Lesnar, can Cain?
3: Cain's chin isn't that great, Lesnar can put him away with a big shot, standing or grounded.

I havent bashed boxing once

i wasn't singling you out. but i'm just saying, i often read folks compare boxing and mma. i don't support one over the other. they're two different sports and business.

whoever mentioned that duddy/chavez thread not being popular is dead wrong though. that was a shit fight even from a boxing fan's standpoint.

i'm sure you won't get more than 3 pages of thread if matt brown and chris lyrtle headlined a ppv.

Me too. The dude showed that he is more than size and athletic ability. He's got a big will as well. When he got back to his feet at the end of round one the 6 people I was watching the fight with went bananas. It just showed what the dude is made of.

That being said, if you watch the replay, he never really got hurt standing. He was overwhelmed when Carwin exploded but only the one uppercut really landed solid on their feet. On the ground, the punches and elbows did damage but Brock was always aware and moving to defend.

Anyway, like I said with my dad and my brother(although he watched a bit more than the former), I bet you the UFC and MMA as a whole gained a lot of fans tonight. Lesnar draws in casuals like no one else in the sport, and he had strong support from the undercard guys. Funny thing is, my dad wrestled himself so he doesn't even find the ground game boring. And appreciates the submission holds. Even fans with less tolerance for the ground game had to be satisfied with the fights tonight. Two wars(Bonnar-Pollack, Akiyama-Leben) and then the drama filled main event.

We were saying the same thing at my house. None of the fights were boring even those that spent some time on the ground.

I don't know that I've ever seen a card with so many submission attempts and big punches. Freaking Lytle throws nothing but bombs and then sinks in one of the coolest subs ever.

I gotta be honest this was the first MMA PPV card that I took in and I must say the shit was whack to me. When the dudes are standing and boxing their technique is fucking horrible. Then when they go to the ground they throw hella punches while grappling. Which is boring to me as well. Don't like the idea of dry humping. Then they get tired and lay on each other. In the case of the Lesnar fight yea Lesnar got the win and I actually wanted him to win but damn he was scared to death when dude let his hands go. Then all he did was wait till the cat got tired out. The other dude was done after the first round and it was over. I don't get all the hoopla that surrounds MMA. But that's just my opinion. I'll Holla 5000

The boxing is very different. For a multitude of reasons. Not as good, technically. And of you don't like grappling then it's just not for you. Some people don't but it's a major part of the sport.Kudos for at least discussing your opinions in a civilized manner.

His standup is horrible because he didnt want to trade with Carwin? Despite that, standup can be improved upon. Ask Josh Koshchek and Rashad Evans about that. Both had bad standup and now its very good.

bad comparison. brock is quite athletic, however his upper body is way too big. his tree trunk arms will never be able to throw a correct hook with any sort of speed or combination. carwin while a big puncher has exactly the same problem. That's not something that can be "corrected".

throughout the history of mma, these giant wrestlers have never been able to punch well or correctly, apart from maybe a straight right. That will never change. Too big/thick too cumbersome.

it is to a certain extent.

he might be able to learn how to throw say a hook with correct form, but it will be slow as shit and will been seen from a mile away. his bodies is just too thick, so while it lends well for grappling, it never will for standup. he'll never be able to throw a combination with any matter.

obviously like other wrestlers he'll try to negate this by taking guys down before they get the chance.

It's a serious theory Seteve_Dave. It's obviously some type of insecurity issue with you and I am just trying to figure out why. You obviously have a deep resentment for the sport and get a rise out of deflating our discussions about it. Not meant to be a shot at you man, just trying to
make sense of it all.

I don't think so, but thanks for the consideration Bob. :bears:

Well, I would have picked Akiyama to win, so I would have gotten only three right out of 7. I was SHOCKED that Leben could pull that off.

Do you think we would be laughing at Fedor vs Overeem? Those guys happen to be real fighters. The guys tonight were two gorillas who should be flipping burgers not on PPV.

I agree with you about Carwin, he shouldn't be a fighter and these type of guy won't be revelant in a few years when the pay gets decent. But Lesnar, while his standup sucks, showed true profesionnalism , ''ring'' awareness and toughness by surviving the onslaught.

ANd people talk about about how pathetic are the bashers who are probably bitter boxing fans, I find it far more laughable to see the UFC lover not being disgusted by Carwin lack of professionalism and cardio and trying to pass it off as normal to see a top contender fighting in a championship fight on a huge PPV gassing after 3 minutes. Must be some real insecure fellow

Bullshit. How you gonna stop the fight when most of the punches werent landing? If Lenser's was hurt, how the fuck did he end up on his feet at the end of the round?

many many fights are stopped way earlier than this one was. The ref made an awesome call, but I wouldn't be shocked at all had it been stopped and yes, maybe it was because of LEsnar star status.

Problem is the ref told him to do something and he would. He kicked Shane off of him three times, controlled shane's wrist more than once. Was punching Shane's face back on more than one occassion. So the ref isnt going to yell show me something, you show him something and he stops the fight. That would be ridiculous IMO.

Fighters in MMA and boxing punch themselves out all the time. He went for the KO, blew his wad and Lesnar didn't go anywhere. Carwin will learn to be more economical and return as a better fighter.

Say what you want about Carwin, but he is still one of the most dangerous HW's in MMA. His punching power is the real deal.

I was certainly laughing when Fedor was subbed in a minute by Werdum. That was a world class move by Fedor, diving into the guard of a 2 time BJJ world champion. Fucking Hilarious you bring up Overeem, He's a real fighter, it's not like he's ever turned tail and ran like a bitch in a fight before..... You should watch more MMA before you say stupid shit. See Overeem vs Sergei Kharitonov

And I don't want anyone locked out or banned or anything. This is a boxing forum and these guys are protective and defensive. I get that.

There has to be a better pure MMA Forum for guys that just want to talk MMA without the boxing vs MMA tint on things.

I've honestly never visited any of the MMA site I see people mention because I enjoy the MMA discussion in here with guys like TFK, yourself, TLC and a few others. But man, you have to admit the slamming gets old. Hell, TLC and I rarely see eye-to-eye on things but at least we are fans of the sport.

I am right on line with you on this. The boxing vs MMA discussion is so old and tired. We all know it only really surfaces here at fightbeat, beings it has been a boxing site for so long. I have always enjoyed guys like REED who have come over and really embraced MMA. Of course, he's a boxing guy and makes no bones about it, but gets into his new fandom. Hell I love the good debates, I'm just so spent on the boxing vs MMA shit. I honestly can't figure out why guys can't embrace both, I do.

That is why REED is the man. He's not afraid to like something other than boxing and doesn't feel threatened by it like a lot of boxing fans.
