View Full Version : Berto-Ortiz: Final Predictions

Less than a week away now.
This is a win-win fight for me. No matter which one loses, I'll be happy. I'm taking Berto within 8-9. Victoria does have a puncher's chance. The way Berto squares himself up he's gonna be hittable. I can see him walking into an Ortiz right hook and getting badly buzzed, maybe even put away. But I think the more likely scenario is that Ortiz doesnt do very well against a man with faster hands than himself. Also, I cant help but think that eventually he's gonna get caught with Berto's right uppercut, and will be on Donald Curry street.

Not to sound like Lou Dibella, but Ortiz is more of a welterweight. I'm willing to bet that he'll come into the ring weighing more than Berto. Plus, all you have to do is watch the press confrence when the two are standing face-to-face. Berto is hardly the bigger man IMO.

I would prefer that Ortiz wins. I think he will at least try to make bigger fights happen and hes much more marketable that Andre.
The only wild card in this fight is that if Ortiz remembers that he actually has punching power, Berto's chin is fairly crappy.
Aside from heart, Ortiz is also the much more talented fighter. The problem is, he'd rather be doing something else.
A motivated Berto should stop him in eight or so rounds.
The Al Haymon-don't-worry-I'll-still-get-you-on-HBO version goes through the motions and settles for a clear decision.

How do you figure that Ortiz is the much better fighter?
I think Berto has much better defence and he mixes up his attack more.

I don't disagree. I don't really hate Ortiz, just the push behind him even though the public has already seen the contrary to be true.
With Berto - he's a good dude, but I just don't like anything about him in the ring, in addition to his being forced down our throat.

I HOPE its a shootout. But with these two, it will either be a shootout, or a cautious pose fest.
i expect berto will be aggressive early and take the fight to ortiz, who will catch him with some hard shots

Like SD says, Ortiz does seem like a total douche, and he's clearly not all there mentally.
But by fuck I hope he wins.
After initially being somewhat of a Berto defender, I can't stand his unwillingness to fight anyone legit. It's pathetic.
So on principle alone, I hope Ortiz wins, Berto deserves to lose more than Ortiz, put it that way.
By the way Xplosive, they are a similar height but Berto looks significantly chunkier. I think Berto is bigger, even though he IS a fairly small welterweight himself.
As far as a prediction goes, I'm honestly not sure. I'll wait till nearer the fight.

I commend whoever is representing Ortiz, they are the very definition of management, whoever they are.
Ortiz rehabilitation at 147 is most impressive, resulting in two HBO dates and a title shot, all stemming from doing a worse job vs Maidana than an ancient Erik Morales, and a division below, at that.

I thought Berto was a MW in the ams or something because I remember his pro debut consisted of a SMW fight so that makes him naturally bigger
Berto UD. 9-3 in rounds. In a fight that we will all call boring, and it will be Berto's fault.

It is pretty funny that Ortiz basically got destroyed and quit against a guy who just got a MD over a shot 122 pound legend.
But Berto isn't exactly much good either. In fact I thought Collazo won their fight close but clear.
I'm really not sure on this one.
I actually think Ortiz is probably the better of the two, but he does kind of have a screw loose, and regardless of how big you think they both are, Berto is at least used to fighting at WW and is clearly more filled out at the weight etc.

So why exactly do you think Berto KO's him early?
Ortiz is better than anyone Berto has fought. It's no guarantee Berto would even beat Maidana.

Are you a retard? "122 pound legend".
He's not a legend from his epic battles at 140 with Jose Alfaro, his prime weight was 122 pounds, thus he's a 122 pound legend.
If you come to the conclusion he's NOT shot after saturday, you're the real dolt. He's not Roy shot, but not many people are. He's still shot.
But even a shot Morales can give as good as he gets to most world class fighters. Only Pacquiao has blown him out.

Morales is a 122lb legend. I disagree with Neil- Its like walking up to Ali and asking him when the last time he weighed 215, and then striking his name from the record books because he's way past his best and fat.
Morales did more good work at 122 than he did at 140.
However, is he shot? Probably not. He's damaged goods and I suspect he may never fight again.

Ortiz can't slip or block a straight right hand and Berto hasn't fought punchers for a reason. I REALLY want Ortiz to clip Berto and put us out of our misery but I think he will get over aggressive then get caught with a counter he doesn't see.

Morales isn't SHOT like Roy etc, just washed up. He can still fight to some extent, he's just very dimished from the prime Morales.

Objectively speaking, if we were academics for example, studying and comparing the performances of both fighters, there's no question but that Ortiz is superior. Berto is basically a hack with fast hands and he's anxious to hold. That isn't skill. And it won't get him far. Even if he beats a top 5 140 pounder in Ortiz, his challenges will still have fallen short of the likes of Cintron, Clottey, Margarito and of course Mosley. His debatable win over Collazo is probably the main reason DiBella, that bald ugly fucker, is trying to shove Berto down our throats the way he did Taylor, with one meaningless vicory after another against guys from a smaller weight class.
What's stupid is that Berto's a boring fighter. If DiBella were smart, he'd sign a guy who can actually fight to beat Berto up before someone under another banner does it. It wil happen. And it will be before Berto is a legitimate attraction.

Absolutely, you can't compare Berto to Taylor at all.
One thing you have to give Jermain, he fought everyone, wasn't afraid to fight legit fighters in his own weight class, and only quit the super 6 because he was clearly done.
The most accurate way of describing Berto is actually as you described, a drag on the sport, taking up a spot he hasn't earned.
A guy like Berto hasn't earned the right to cherry pick, he hasn't even beaten one legit WW ffs, and he's masquerading as a world champ.

Pacquiao against Berto wouldn't even be competitive. Pacquiao would pretty much destroy him, it wouldn't be much different from Pacquiao Vs Hatton.
Berto is no risk at all. Even this version of Shane represents more risk. He is tougher and more powerful, even if he is borderline shot.
Berto would jump at the chance? He wouldn't get 10 mil or even close to it, and did you not see the interview where they mentioned Pacquiao's name? He literally just mumbled something, he has no interest in fighting Manny at all.

Actually I think it's you that's naive.
Most promoters are content to just milk their fighters for all they're worth, selling one bullshit fight to the public after another. Just like Frunk Werren made a career out of.
For that to change, GENERALLY, it's up the fighter to actually campaign to get better fights, or move to another promoter. Berto is clearly content with taking no risks.

Naive my fucking arsehole, if anyone is naive, it's those that think the fighter has no say. The fighter ALWAYS has a say ultimately.
It's really whether they choose to enact that say, or be content to poodle along fighting nobodies, like Calzaghe did for most of his career, and like Berto seems happy to do.

berto would never get $10 million...that would mean Manny's getting $75 million.
Berto has no fanbase so he'd have to take whatever they offered. Would simply mean Manny gets a larger slice of the pie.
Don't forget, berto drew less than 1,000 folks to his "this one's for Haiti" fight. There are friday night fight cards that draw better than that.

Whats the deal with Berto? Is he a misguided softy who thinks he can fight, or is he a real fighter who just fights down to the level of his pretty average comp? :dunno:
Is a "thinking" fighter like Ortiz really the man to do a number on him?
Kellerman alluded to how "timing" was needed to beat a guy as fast as Berto, does Ortiz have that timing??
I think Ortiz might just be cashing out here....although.....he might have seen something in Berto....like Schmelling did in Louis, and like Morales did in Maidana.
Could this be Davey Moore {Berto} vs Roberto Duran {Ortiz} all over again??

Fact is, Berto doesn't know how to fight. He's athletic and can time the occasional clean counter, but basically, he doesn't know how to fight.

Ortiz cheated, is probably on gear, outweighed his man, and was "fah-fah" by the 6th round.
The only palatable aspect of his win is that Berto is Ortiz-Lite, pardon the pun.

Neil, I promise, if I could sit down and have a beer with you, you would see where I am coming from, much easier. First 6 rounds were up there with most of these sort of poor-mans Hagler-Hearns fests we have had, very entertaining, with both men showing balls, heart and skill- breath-taking fare, albeit on a slightly lower skill-level than anything Hearns-Hagler offered up.
After the 6th, it degenerated into a butt-fest, hold-fest, with lots of "fah-fah" from Ortiz. The drama ebbed away and it become a grinding affair, with intermittent class from both men which did little to interrupt the overall maul the fight had become.
Ortiz, a man who quit at 140 versus a guy who Khan and, according to you guys, Morales got the better of, comes off a draw, moves up a gear, comes into the ring weighing the same as, and looking like, a Middleweight. That kind of kills the amusement for me, for openers.
Go back and check the posts- I wanted Ortiz to win from way back but that changed once I observed what I interpret as, sham. Its like motor-racing. Some guys have better sponsors, better fuel, better tires, so they win. Bollox to that.
If I want to see guys win fights because they have size advantages, I will go elsewhere.

Haven't seen this Ortiz fight yet, but I've seen Ortiz before, so I'm stunned by this result.
Collazzo couldn't punch yet hurt Berto. ortiz can punch and kept Berto hurt.
Also, for all the shit talked about Ortiz's heart in the 6th round what he did should forever erase that talk.

Ortiz was butting? Give me a fucking break.
That was a fantastic fight. Through 7 or 8 rounds, one of the absolute best I've seen in years.
Turns out Ortiz does have heart. That was a KO punch in round 6.

Rios would get KO'd by Ortiz at 147. And at 140, Ortiz would probably get stopped due to being drained.
Its up to Rios if he'd be willing to move to 147 to get this fight.

Doesn't Ortiz winning a DECISION just shit on all of that? I thought it was a sham in Berto's favor as well but the result proved us wrong and in a good way.
Oh, I see, win a decision in an entertaining fight and all past sins are forgotten? I didn't know it worked that way.

Thats true. Ortiz had a better inside game, thanks to his being far stronger {we'll come back to that later, no doubt} but please, his use of the head was flagrant. It happened in every round.
He would move in, throwing punches, then use the head.
Are you saying he did not use his head persistently in that fight? How many times did Michael "Son of A Mexican Legend" Ortega warn him about the head?
And there is Larry Merchant...."Ortega is imposing himself in this fight too much...we are not here to see him"...fuck that. The rules are the rules. Ortega did a shitty job of enforcing them but they are there nonetheless.
Ortiz was flagrant and persistent with the butting.
You will have to forgive my cynicism, but the Khan fight, another De La Hoya production....set the tone for the evening.

Ahhhhhh.
But how far does the fight have to veer from the true pugilistic path before the entertainment value fades??
Quite far, it seems, especially if Housey is Winning.
I would agree- it was cracking stuff, especially early rather than later, but it just wanes for me when it becomes obvious what is happening. I get jaded when I see awkward stories about being "drained at 140" raising their ugly head when we all know that the Bay Area was hard at work last night.

The "fight" was comparatively tepid stuff after the 6th. Berto did not "stop fighting" after that, he won at least 2 of the remaining 6 rounds.

The fact is, Ortiz took more chances in 12 rounds last night than Wlad has since Brewster.

But even being drained, theres NO excuse for him not destroying Peterson.
But obviously, fighting like he did last night, he woulda had Peterson gone very quickly.

I came to be more of a Berto fan last night than an Ortiz fan.....he never quit and made a fatal mistake in the 6th when he should have taken his 10-8 instead of trying to finish Ortiz. No biggie.
I think he showed plenty of fight and got a raw deal from the commentary team who were clearly rooting for Ortiz.
The attempt, by the very people who hyped Berto up in the first place, to make Berto look like he was seeking a way out of the fight, that he was eliciting fouls from his opponent, and playing to the referee, was as cheap as it was obvious.
And this from a Network who have aired fight after fight of a guy who feigns he has been hit low, feigns that he has been hit to the back of the head, goes down, tries to get opponents disqualified.

Amir Khan.
Amir, after all, does not have to fight Tim Bradley, as he is going onto to bigger and better things at 147, where he will not fight Manny Pac, who is his friend, you see.
That leaves Ortiz, whom as you have all already alluded to, is afraid of Khan.
