RIP I never cared for him as a commentator and especially how dick-ish he came across on that Manila documentary, but he did the right thing in leaving Ali in 77’ and telling him to retire because it was too dangerous to fight on.
R I P but it must be one of the greatest feats in ali's career that his reputation alone kept this fella on tv and relevant for so long
Put it this way - I miss the 90s HBO team of Lampley (less biased in the 90s), Merchant, and Foreman (for comic relief). But I do NOT miss the 90s Showtime team of Albert, Pacheco, and Czyz. The worst broadcast team ever assembled.
I don’t know if I ever heard an insightful or funny comment from Pacheco in all those years on Showtime.
I liked when Ferdie referred to Whitaker as pee-wee. It'd be funny if it were making fun of Whitaker's actual nick-name. But in Pacheco's case, it was due to utter ignorance on his part, which for a paid so-called expert, was inexcusable in my opinion. Still, I used to laugh everytime he said it, partly because he was so clueless, and partly because it was disparaging to Whitaker.
