I always liked Verno. He is a solid lunch box type of fighter. I expect Williams to outwork him and win a UD.
:dunno: Margarito don't want to rematch Williams...just yet..Margarito isnt' campaigning for that rematch..he mention wanting to fight a few guys at 147...Cotto, Mosley..but not Williams... Verno is average..but he can surprise a few..he won't win..but it will put to slow down those people who say Williams would beat Pavlik...
Mitchell, I don't know about your thread title. I've yet to hear that Phillips' title will be at stake; in fact, all indications seem to point to his eventually giving up the title in taking this fight. As I re-read the blurb you posted, it suggests that the fight will be for the WBO interim title, which all but confirms that Phillips will vacate... that's if FightNews got that part right.
This will be a one sided fight. Hopefully Paul stays at 154. I'd like to see him fight Martinez. It appears that Martinez is a rich man's version of Quintana. Or better yet, I'd like to see him in against Kirkland.
This will be his 6th fight in 13 months. :bears: The only question in this fight is whether it goes the distance.
Yeah, I goofed...it's for said "for the WBO interim 154lb title". I seriously need to actually read the full sentences. ::
For both fighters to get paid? :dunno: I'm sure Verno wouldn't mind the payday, as well as the added bonus of not losing a title in the ring. What I don't like about it, is that if a WBO interim title is at stake, then Williams, should he win, will be forced to give up one belt or the other. I don't see an interim title piquing anyone's interest at 154 any more so than the belt he currently holds at 147. And call me crazy but what exactly does he line up with an interim title win at 154? Neither HBO or Showtime will pay for PWill-Dzinziruk, and if by some chance Julio wins next month, there's no way in hell Main Events will let him fight Williams in his very next fight, if at all. In all honestly, if not for Phillips' IBF title, it might as well be for no title at all.
Does Phillips have an unattractive mandatory to fulfill? I guess from Verno´s point it is simple. He will get a decent payday and should he win, he´ll enforce the WBO "mandatory" against the Dzinziruk/Julio winner and get another nice payday. I doubt Paul Williams really cares about the belt, it´s just an incentive for Verno to give up the IBF belt.
There's actually no mandatory. The issue is whether or not the IBF would approve a title defense against an "unranked" lower weight fighter, since Williams is a WBO champ.
lame fight. phillips is one of the accomplished 154 pounders in the last decade and half or so, but i'd rather see him on espn2 like he was during his comeback trail. goosen cards suck.
Verno Phillips is no chump, Paul has a fight on his hands. If Arreola bothers to train and backs off the beer and mexican food that he devours and drinks between fights, I think he is the next heavyweight champion. Chris is really going to have to hire a nutritionist, as he does what Ricky hatton does between fights, except it is obvious on Chris as he was VERY flabby in his last fight.
The beer might be asking too much :: Regarding the Garcia fight though - in his defense, there were a lot of issues going into that Versus fight. Like if it was actually going to happen. That said, he owes it to himself to generally be in better shape than that. I don't know how far he'll go at heavyweight, but I can honestly say he's the only one I'll go out of my way to watch these days.
I really wanna see Duddy-Angulo. Fuddy Duddy would be beaten up so bad by El Perro, that his fraud ass would never fight again.
