Default Does Max Kellerman know more about boxing than everybody here?

I don't mean picking winners in fights and stuff like that. I mean in terms of boxing history, records, fighters, etc. Kellerman is like an encyclopedia. He brings up names of fighters from even the 1800s to make a point.
Who on this board knows more than him in terms of boxing's rich history?

Growing up, his family would sit at the dinner table and argue numbers, facts, and figures about sports. He actually read sports encyclopedias, almanacs, and stat books for fun.

His problem is that he is absolutely clueless when it comes to relating historical fighters to fighters of today.

Max knows more about a lot of subjects, not just boxing, than most, if not all, here and any other boxing message board.

I don't care for him as an announcer (he has his moments, but is far too agenda driven for his own good, even in comparison to others), but dude is mad smart, and can pose a convincing argument on just about any subject.

    Not just sports, either.

Which other subjects does Max know about, Jake? I mean, I only know him as a boxing analyst and nothing else. Does he do other shows discussing other things I don't know about?

he seems to know very little about objectivity and obviously favors African American fighters, almost unconditionally.

the fact that as a sports announcer, he does this, whether knowingly or not, demonstrates an intellectual deficit to some extent when it comes to his profession.

and memorizing history isn't an intellectually demanding task, by the way. it's generally considered obsessive behavior, that in many cases is carried out due to an inferiority complex.

the one thing i like about Max though is his ability to see the whole picture and articulate the implications of events that take place related to the sport.

True, that's why I said he's like a boxing encyclopedia. I heard Tyson is also a boxing encyclopedia. But Kellerman has the worst record for picking fights and that is, to some degree, a reflection of boxing intelligence.
It's difficult to respect a historian who is almost always wrong in his fight picks, don't you think Reed?

I've noticed this too. It's like he wishes he was black or something.

He used to study any sport he could get his eyes on. Who would read about cricket(Besides maybe you)? He would.

He was the origional host of Pardon the Interruption on ESPN, and then had a similar show on FOX Sports Net after pricing himself out of ESPN.

EDIT: Side note.....The guys on that show genuinely enjoyed and respected Kellerman's opinions. They don't really care at all for what Reilly has to say.

I always found it funny about this whole "Max favors black fighters" thing. Ask him to list his favorites, and there's a whole lotta white on that list....Gatti being at the top.

Does he know more than Larry Merchant? Merchant is twice his age and has been ringside for fights all the way back to the 40s.

    That's different and they're different.

Merchant will tell you what kind of emotions were going on in the arena for Ali's fight against Joe Frazier.

Kellerman will tell you what the punch count was.

Merchant is wittier (or at least was, but perhaps still is) and carries more of a writer's mentality than does Max, but yes I'd surmise that Max is considerably smarter than Merchant is and perhaps ever was

Max is doing what true boxing fans wish they could do. He's been doing this since he was a young boy on a NY public access station. Good for him. It's great to have a boxing fan who cares about the sport be involved with it!
