I was at the gym with Nate Campbell......

I have a couple of amateur boxers here in Jacksonville, in which whom, I'm preparing for a show in Tampa on Saturday (the 20th) and Nate happened to stop by the gym, in fact, he was there when we got there.

We were talking about past fights and his time in the amateurs. He was telling us about his fight with Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz. He mentioned how badly he destroyed Casamayor physically and should have gotten the decision. I watched that fight, and agree, he could have gotten the decision or at the very least, received a draw.

He talked about the lacerations to the face and bruised liver Casamayor had received from him and how he was the first and only fighter to send Casamayor to the hospital without knocking him out.

As far as Juan Diaz is concerned, he was proud to have beaten Diaz at his own game.

Of course, I had to ask him about the Tim Bradley fight; he called Bradley a bitch and what not, while also talking about the back and forth during the post-fight conference. He said it was the headbutt that changed the complexion of the fight and how he is still feeling the effects of that headbutt. In fact, he said that his eye still gets blurry on occasion because of the butt and it also leaks from time to time, especially when he sleeps.

Finally, I asked about his next title shot, in which he answerd by saying "I don't want another title shot again"; his reasoning, he can't deal with the sanctioning fees! I wonder how many other boxers out there are not so anxious in being a belt holder because of the ridiculous "sanctioning fees"? I told him, if anything ever meant anything, the Ring Magazine belt is all that matters.

By the way, his next fight is against Victor Ortiz, at the Garden in New York.

Do you infer that Ortiz isn't tough from the Maidana fight?

The kid can take a punch for sure, he may be able to cope better with adversity in the future. He was about to get KO'd and couldn't deal with it, he may have been unprepared for that (who is anyway?). He may be able to overcome that. I wouldn't write off a guy that young that showed so much promises. I haven't seen him fight since that fight though, did you see something in his following fights (if he had any) that was indicative of him being a wuss?

I am inferring Pedan is tougher then Ortiz.

I am inferring that fighters who have a history of "not wanting to be in there", especially younger fighters............don't usually toughen up as they get older. If he's not hungry now, he never will be.

I don't remember exactly which fight but I remember a bout where Pedan was getting his ass kicked. He was throwing up in the corner and he still wanted to continue with the fight.

I don't see that in Ortiz, and I think it's one of those things you either have or you don't.

I don't think he's a wuss. Listening to him talk, I think he might just be too smart for the game to be honest. He knows the damage prizefighting inflicts on the body and is conscious of it all the time. As a boxer, that's just poison. Unless he gets some sort of Zen trainer in his camp............that's the way he'll always be.

He's not talented enough, dominant enough or have the right style (Klitschko's, Mayweather) to pick and choose when he wants to and doesn't want to engage and take punishment.

I think Ortiz should handle the present version of Nate, but it's not a gimme and the Nate of a couple years ago (barring stupidity.........a big if I know), would have probably punished Ortiz into quitting just like Maidana did.
