Default Thoughts on Floyd and Manny's next opponent...

Was just thinking about this today. I think most people want to see Floyd and Manny fight next, but what if they were to both move up to fight Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams, respectively, and then provided they both win that fight, THEN match up and I think the fight could be even bigger.

It's hard to imagine the fight being any bigger than it could be right now, but barring them matching up immediately, I think this is the best case scenario for their next fights.

There's really no one left at welter for either of them that does anything for them. Moving up to the next division and taking on legit guys there, could be solid matchups.

And for once, I don't think Floyd would be the foregone conclusion as winning.

I don't think Paul Williams stands a chance against Manny, due to Manny's speed and relentlessness.

I think Floyd has a very good shot at beating Martinez, but as long as Martinez doesn't go below 154, and he's said he won't for any amount of money, then I think Sergio definitely has a shot at beating Floyd.

That'd be a nice doubleheader they could put on. Can you imagine the PPV #'s if those two fights were put on the same night?

A Double Header with Floyd vs. Sergio and Manny vs. Paul would do at LEAST 1.5 million buys, I think. Appart, they probably do about a million each, if that. But together, that'd be a helluva ppv card. Add a few decent undercard fights, and that's a PPV that you really can't argue against buying. For once.

Nobody cares anymore, unless they fight one another. There just isn't anyone left --- fighting someone else will be condemned as ducking the match of the moment. Mayweather played his last card with the champion, Mosley, & Pacquiao was finished after beating Cotto. I refuse to diminish his conquering of Clottey, since that is already taken for granted by far, far too many observers --- however, there is no escaping the fact, impressive though it was, it stands as a, "Treading Water" fight.

It's time. I'll be decidedly uninterested if either announces their next opponent isn't the other man.

I get you, but I think in the case of moving up to fight someone at THEIR weight (no catch weight bullshit) then how can that be dismissed as a treading water type situation?

Obviously the best case scenario is for them to fight each other, but if that doesn't work out, I think that Floyd would get the most credit for fighting Sergio, but Manny probably wouldn't get as much for Williams, due to I think most people thinking that's a mismatch due to Manny's speed and power.

But aside from them fighting each other, I don't see anyone ELSE besides moving up to fight at 154 as giving them any credence.

just read robert morales' article on boxingscene. where merchant questions why mayweather jr wont just fight pacquiao without the testing. he and others have wondered why "if mayweather jr is soooo goood why wont he just take the fight since he's the best. i wonder if this type of logic was tossed around when ray robinson would threaten to back out of fights if concessions were not made at the last minute.

It couldn't be dismissed as treading water --- but to what degree can that be taken? You could theoretically say, "Well, after beating X at 154, what if they then went to 160 & defeated X? Wouldn't that be great?"

Sure, it would be. It still wouldn't satisfy. Some things, a man just has to do, as the addage goes. No more games. No more bullshit. No more trinket-chasing. Just Mayweather, just Pacquiao. NO MORE DISTRACTIONS!

Manny and Floyd need to make that fight now, the window on the hype for it IMO will eventually close a bit and I think it'll actually lose some steam if this goes on for another year or more. Floyd especially is coming off the biggest win of his career against a top named fighter, beating Sergio won't cause nearly the anticipation or promotional hype of him against Manny as beating Mosley did.

TBH, the fight has probably already lost quite a bit of sheen versus had it happened in march. Any further delay is just disastrous for the sport.

I honestly wouldn't pay anything to see them fight anyone except each other.

Even if Mayweather moved up to HW to take on one of the Klits, it would be pointless unless he faced Manny first.

Boxing fans should honestly relegate themselves to the sobering truth that this fight will never happen. Manny is distracted and likely has one fight left which is within a very tight timeframe.

Meanwhile I am sure Mayweather doesn't think he needs a Manny fight to prove anything.

Ahhh, the sadness of modern boxing.

Nah. Since both dominated 2 of the top 5 Welterweights like they didn't even belong in the ring I think the fight even increased. Buuuut they need to fight now. Fighting Williams, Martinez in higher weight classes is fucking stupid. One, they stand to either lose or look shitty due to bigger opposition and weight divisions. 147 is the highest both can go and still be at their best and they're both in a great momentum right now. Make the fucking fight happen God.

I'd pay $200 ppv to see Floyd vs either Klitschko, to be honest.
    I wouldn't pay more than $50 for Floyd/Pac though.

Not me. I could have dealt with an extra 4 bucks but that 99 cents on top is the straw that broke the camel's back.
