Why does every non-boxing fan call him Merriweather?

Has anyone else noticed how frequently non-fans make the mistake of calling Mayweather, Merriweather? What the hell is up with this? It's not a big deal. I get it. But it's not an isolated mistake either. People on the radio make it. People at work. Nobody outside of real boxing fans seem able to get this guy's name right. It's pretty funny actually.

They call him "Merriweather" as they barely know who the fuck he is.

Damn I dunno where you live, but where I'm at everybody knows who Floyd is, and says his name properly. They might not know much bout boxing, but they know Floyd.

I've never heard anyone call him that. He's probably the most known active boxer on the planet right now so I can't see why anyone would screw up his name.

Is this another attempt of yours to use sarcasm as the basis for making your point or are the people you work with really morons?

    Exactly.

Then again, I used to hear people call, Holyfield, "Hollyfield." And there's no disputing his wide-spread fame.

Still, I agree. For most, he's a passing sound-byte, a flash somewhere on a bar's plasma screen. Nobody "really" knows who the hell he is, or what he does. That's probably to PBF's benefit.

It's not just people at work. It's people everywhere. Like I said, on the radio, even on tv. If you read the thread, I ask, "is it just me?" Because I'm fully allowing for the possibility, that as in your case, not everyone has noticed this.

But no. You have to be a fucking prick about it. :atu:

No that's probably who they were actually talking about and Double L was the one who got confused. They probably went on their NFL message board and made a thread called "Why does this non-football guy at work call him Mayweather?"

:giggle: you are probably right, since despite X's experiences, I have found that in today's world, even a famous boxer like Floyd Mayweather is only slightly more well known to the average person than a good, but generally forgotten 1980s linebacker

Uh, yeah. It does. And there's been at least one feasible explanation on here as to why, which is that there was a football player named Merriweather. What this means is that it's very possible Merriweather is not an uncommon name, which means that people who haven't before heard the name Mayweather, but have in the past heard of the name Merriweather, are inclined to assume without confirmation that what they've heard, or what they've read, is Merriweather, and not the less familiar, Mayweather. Now go fuck yourself.

I've never, ever heard anyone ever refer to Floyd Mayweather as "Merriweather". Or at least until I read this topic.

A sad day when most are wrong and Double L is the one who has it right...

But I've heard it quite often as well. Not that I'd start a thread about it, mind you... but I've heard mainstream refer to him as Merriweather on more than one occasion, although it seems like everyone's getting his name right lately.
