Thread: Alvarez is minus 2.2 pounds overweight for WBC Jr. middleweight championship

  1. #1

Default Alvarez is minus 2.2 pounds overweight for WBC Jr. middleweight championship

He weighed in 151.8 pounds for the WBC 154 pound title and has to drop 1.8 pounds. Not sure what happens, if he doesn´t make weight.

    From Fightnews:

    Big Joe Miranda

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez weighed in at 151.8 pounds for his 154lb WBC world title match against Matthew Hatton on Saturday. Unfortunately for Alvarez, the bout against welterweight Hatton is being being fought at a 150lb catch weight (four pounds under the division limit), so he needs to drop 1.8 pounds.

How much dumber can it get? Explain that to a casual sports fans.

    Thanks for saving boxing Oscar.

Minus 2.2lbs overweight...what does that mean? He is a minus figure over something??

I bet what happened here was that Oscar didn't fucking explain to Canelo what he needed to have done in order to get the fight made.

They mentioned so many figures that nobody remembered what the correct one was.

    Dummies.

Presumably Alvarez forfeits money to Hatton per the terms of the contract but the fight will still be for the title. Catch weights are just a contractual stipulation between the fighters, no?

I wouldn't mind only I just submitted my pick for this a few moments ago, then I see this new information. Still Canelo should have too much for this Hatton dude.

You can change picks right up until fight time. Just dont edit the post once the fight starts ->.

Because he wants to keep fighting welterweights without having to make weight, I suppose.

Ricky said earlier in the week to walk away...

"Our contract with Golden Boy promotions stipulates both fighters come in at or under 150 lbs. If Alvarez is above that I would want Matthew to call it off. He is already giving away weight to a bigger man."

“Boxing is made up of weight classes,” De La Hoya criticized. “Stick to your weight classes.”

“Whitaker was so slick and to me, he felt like he was in a whole different class,” De La Hoya said. “He was a southpaw and he had all these tricky moves and everything. But he didn’t mind trading with you and Mayweather didn’t want to do that.”

Well Matthew's gotta weigh up how much he needs the money, but ideally it'd be great if he took a stand against this shit and pulled out. It's disgusting.

    There is...

There is a clause in the fight contract that calls for Alvarez to lose 30% of his purse if he weighs in above the contract limit of 150.

The fight will happen, Hatton just took some extra money. That was predictable. Since he was below 154 it's still for the title.

Yeah, I don't think there was any ever real doubt...the contract calls for penalties.

    -2.2 pounds overweight

The whole catchweight thing is becoming pretty absurd really.

Yeah I know I kind of forgive Pacquiao for it, but that's not even because I'm a big fan of Manny, it's actually because he's fucking 5'5 and a natural featherweight.

Even Pacquiao's constant catchweight fighting is becoming annoying. I wish he would just fight at 147 or 140.

The only good thing I can possibly see for catchweights is if they make more fights get made that otherwise might not.

    Agreed!
In proportion, Puerto Rico is and has been the biggest champion producer in the World.
