    Default Robinson-Burley

    How does this go?

There's certainly a case to be made for saying Robinson didn't think he could win. The fight was offered in 1946 at the biggest purse of Robinson's career and the challenge ducked. After retirement Ray said he doubted whether he could have beaten Charlie.....maybe those were generous words for a historically neglected contemporary or maybe he meant them.

    Thoughts.

Where are the specifics for this purse?

I do not believe it as Burley could not draw flies.

Hey, Im just going on what I read in various snippets of unsourced spoutings by anonymous malcontents like everyone else. This is the internet baby, not a court of law.

Not much. Youtube has a bit, including a sooper-pretentious video analysing his skills. His style was playful but deadly serious and the integrity of his artistry belies total serenity.

He looked good. I'm sure guys like Joe, Ramonza and cdogg can tell us more.

Truthfully I don't have enough to go on, burley was obviously great but there's very little of him... All we have is some snippets and an exemplary ledger... I wouldn't want to start analyzing off of that

Let's ask StingerKarl, I'm sure he's seen Burley fight live.

No tentative thoughts on how his style matches up with Robinson? Obviously it's stupid to come down hard based on so little footage, but there's enough to get an impression I think (given the context of his record). I can imagine him frustrating Ray somewhat and lowering his output. I can also imagine Ray just doing & throwing too much and winning the majority of rounds. Ray's shear output is an underrated attribute, he threw ALLOT of hard shots.

In many ways it's a Pac-Floyd type match up. Similar to my thoughts on that one, I kinda lean towards the cutey though.

You better shut up if you know what's good for you. Karl will come through your wires like Horace Pinker and GET YA.

well, certainly based on what is often written about Burley and on the scant footage of him, it becomes pretty clear that economic movement and countering were his main M.O. ... He was obviously very tough and very durable (never stopped in a long career against excellent opposition) so I dont worry about him being stopped, even by a guy who could pour it on like Robinson... certainly be a lot like what you are describing, Ray busy and Burley selective... But I don't feel comfortable going much further than that
