After three weeks of its release Ben Affleck's political historical events thriller Argo accomplished one of those rare feats for a three weeks old film: grab the top spot at the box office. With $12.3 million the film has now grossed over $60 million and seems headed for some serious Oscar nominations come January. Also improving its numbers is the sleeper family hit Hotel Transylvania which rises from the number four spot last week to #2 at the tune of $9.5 million and has now a total of $130.4 million gross easily becoming Sony Studios highest grossing animated film to date. Also it became the unexpected Halloween winner which many thought was going to be the sequel Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. This new release not only failed to meet its studio expectations, but it opened in the 5th spot? with a 'meh' $8 million...way below its original film $20.7 million opening a few years ago. The first film was a minor hit with $45 million gross, but achieved cult status on DVD release and has become a horror fans favorite. Debuting at #3 with a weekend gross of $9.4 million, Cloud Atlas can officially be called the biggest box office failure of the season. The $100 million production spend even more than $9 million on advertising alone. The German company who put the money for this project should had known better when the siblings who directed this film delivered a turkey with the more commercially attractive Speed Racer. Paranormal Activity 4 had a disastrous second week dropping 70.1% of its numbers with a lame $8.6 million landing in the fourth spot. Taken 2 tied numbers with Silent Hill, $8 million. Until the final numbers are released on Monday afternoon we will not know which film bested the other for the #5 & #6 spots. This weeks other new releases went largely ignored by audiences. Nickeledeon films Halloween teen comedy Fun Size failed to grab its target audience and landed in the 10th spot with $4 million. Expect it to debut on that tv channel movie of the week within a few weeks. Worst was the surfing film Chasing Mavericks: it wasn't even to crack the top ten and crashed on the #13 spot with only $2.2 million. That is really bad for a film that is being shown at 2,002 screens nation wide. Why studios keep making surfing movies is beyond me. There hasn't been a single one that has made any money at the box office, but like the gay genre, it keeps getting made to please a very small part of the population...who also prefers the real thing instead of the reel thing.

The film got mixed reviews and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63% or 6.5/10 which isn't exactly good. Some critics calls it a 'gorgeous mess'.

Cloud Atlas is a brave project. I admire them for attempting to bring the book to the big screen.

    Will you check it out?

But the biggest box office news today is that Skyfall opened overseas with $77.6 million gross.
