The Woman in Black is a refreshing throwback to the great gothic horror films that Hammer Films treated us back in the days of yore when slasher films were not invented yet and ruined the whole genre. This is the first attempt of the newly resurrected Hammer company to do what they used to do best: pure unalduterated supernatural gothic horror and they succeed with high marks. Daniel Radcliff of Harry Potter fame, portrays Arthur, a widow man and father who is assigned by his boss to travel to a remote village to settle the proper arrangements towards the potential value and sale of an abandoned house. What he ends up is discovering the town's secret of the curse of the woman in black, a spectre that when seen by anyone will claim the life of one of the town's children. The film is effective in its atmosphere, direction, acting and plot. It rans for only 96 minutes which is proper time enough to build its tension as Arthur decides to spend the night alone in the haunted property and face the ghost. One of the best ghost stories you will ever watch. 8.5

    SPOILER ALERT!!!!

Arthur tried to end the curse by reuniting the ghost with her dead child. It was a nice idea that didn't work at all. The spectre didn't recognize the dead corpse as her son and her rage was still on. She lured Arthur's son to walk on the railroad. Arthur tried to rescue him. Both died. Then they meet Arthur's deceased wife/boy's mom. Walk together toward the afteralife.

    The End

    what part you didn't get?

I thought this was a good movie. The ending was a bit sad - is it too much to ask for one of these movies to have a happy ending just once in a blue moon?!?!?!

How do you know she didnt recognize him? The movie would have been better if Radcliff turned out to be her son.

I just speculate she didn't recognized him, but that is not really important. What is important was that Arthur's idea didn't work and he paid the price. The rage and hatred of the ghost was too big and she might be very disturbed, crazy, to reason with.

What was the point of arthur's friend getting haunted and hearing voices? What was the whole point of that? It makes no sense for her to be upset with Arthur for helping. none.

You mean when they both spend the night at haunted manor? the place was haunted so it is expected that no only Arthur, but his older friend also experience some form of paranormal activity. She was in rage towards everybody. You can conclude according to the letters Arthur read at the manor that during her last days she lost her mind and was full of hate. She didn't saw Arthur as 'helping', but 'intruding'. According to the town's folks lore every time someone sees her, a child will die, so she claimed Arthur's son, who was an easy target out there in the train station. I don't think she was picking on him. Just that the boy was an easier target than maybe another town's child.

Yeah but they never concluded the story with the friend's haunt. Why was he seeing his child?

He didn't saw only his own child; he saw all the dead children. So did Arthur before him. They seemed to be damned souls after they were induced by the woman in black to kill themselves .

I get it. What i am saying is that why did he and arthur both see them? Nobody else seemed to see them.

Did they spend the night there? I thought they were only there a few hours and then went to the train station that night.

Well, recovering the corpse from the mud swamp might have taken a while, then Arthur taking a bath and rearranging the boy's room properly and then placing the corpse in the tomb with mom's skeleton...it seems like it was almost all night. The train might have arrived before dawn thus the reason it was still dark.

But still: they were the only ones venturing in that place.

What did THAT place have to do with her haunting? She was angry because of what happened in the mud area. Why did she torment those in town? And how come her boy wasnt a ghost like arthur's friend's boy?

Shit movie. Works only in cinemas because of the loud sound effects. The story was uninteresting and the pace was slow.
