Production budget: $130 million. Box office after nine days: $20 million. The trailer looks nice though.

Have we ever seen so many big budgeted films bombing every week during a summer season or any other season for that matter?

Now that you say it, it indeed seems to be a RIPD-off. The aliens are replaced by dead people.

I'm glad it bombed and I'm glad Ryan Reynolds was part of it.

The mistake they made was not giving the film more character by using a black guy instead of Reynolds. Namely Will Smith lol.

These past years has been disastrous. Even Spielberg is predicting an implosion in Holywood. Studios are paying too much for these movies while you can spend less with a good script and make a decent earning while getting critical praise (The Focus Films strategy).

2012 has made more profits than 2011. 2013 is on schedule to make more than 2012.

Maybe the industry as a whole will make profit, but the truth is that last year there was only one or two major box office bomb while this year is a succession of films failing to break even domestically. Even The Wolverine is being called a 'disappointment' since the studio was expecting at least a $70 million opening instead of the $55 million it made. The foreign box office will rescue it though.

After Earth had a budget of $130 million. To break even it needs to make $260 million plus. Domestically is closing with only $60 million and worldwide it has made $235.6 million. Is still losing money.

After earth has already made over 100 million dollars in Profit. Where you get the idea it needs to make 260 million profit in order to be profitable is ridiculous. The studios dont care about foreign or domestic anymore. They take it all into account. And after earth is considered a success in their eyes. Wolverine will do just fine. Again. Movie studios make more money in the foreign market than the domestic one. The world has grown since the 70s and 80s panch.

there has been more big budget movies that succeeded this year than failed. Superman is killing oversees right now.

Anthony: we had this kind of dialogue before, but still you are not accepting the facts. Do a little research on how the movie business works. Again, in a nutshell, for a movie make profit it has to make twice its budget and a little bit more. Why? because every ticket sold needs to be split between the movie studio that financed the film, the distributors AND the movie theater owners who are showing the movie in their screens. Movie studios do NOT get 100% of every dollar spend on movie tickets. So if a movie like After Earth cost $130 million (not including the marketing budget which could have been easily $50 million), it has to make twice that amount ($260 million ) to recoup its investment. Anything less than that is loses for the studio. Yes, every dollar counts, including worldwide, but a movie that is considered a disappointment in USA, will have a hard time getting a sequel greenlighted since USA is still the most profitable country for Hollywood studios.

I have told you before and will tell you again. Movie studios DO NOT GET 50% of the ticket sales. They get 20-25%.

Read carefully what you just wrote: you are contradicting yourself!:hut:
Anyway I did not said the studios get 50% of the ticket sales. I stated that they DO NOT GET 100% of every movie ticket sold, thus the need for a film to make twice its budget to break even. http://io9.com/5747305/how-much-money-does-a-movie-need-to-make-to-be-profitable

Panch what you arent getting is that the major studios have offices overseas. The overseas market is growing bigger and bigger. The smart movie studios took note of that early on and developed international distributions deals. Which is why a movie like pacific rim is already buzzing for a sequel. The problem with you panch is you live too slow. You think something is the same 10 years ago, but you dont even realize something is not even the same from yesterday. The world is growing at a rapid pace. You better keep up pops.

‘Pacific Rim’ $9M Opening In China Biggest Ever For Warner Bros: Sequel Likely Now

EXCLUSIVE… UPDATED: I’ve just learned that momentum is building for a Pacific Rim sequel based on the international box office for the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros summer tentpole. The latest development is the 3D sci-fi actioner’s Wednesday opening in China to a record-breaking $9M from an estimated 5,700 digital 3D screens, 117 digital 3D IMAX screens, and 22 China Giant Screen sites. That’s a new high for any Warner Bros release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film including 3D Harry Potter 7B. Pacific Rim grossed a huge 70% of the Top Five market share there. This is after the pic broke through to become the #1 film internationally on July 19-21 as it rolled out into less than half the global territories. Pacific Rim releases in Spain, Brazil and Japan on August 9th. The result is that screenwriter Travis Beacham (who had the original idea which also resulted in Legendary’s homegrown graphic novel) and co-scribe/director Guillermo del Toro’s film will likely have a sequel. No one is yet saying this movie is going to turn a profit due to the high cost of its Industrial Light & Magic CGI which sent the budget to $180M-$220M. Unfortunately, U.S. theatrical sales are not expected to exceed $100M all in so overseas coin was crucial. But international was always a big part of Pacific Rim‘s strategy in a crowded summer marketplace. Through Tuesday, the pic’s foreign cume is $144.7M from 52 territories and its worldwide total is $229M. As I’ve said before, Legendary’s mega-financier Thomas Tull has the luxury of mining this marginal outcome into a franchise. Warner Bros underwrote 25% of the film and receives the global distribution fees.
