The opposite of the Defining Roles thread: which roles/films ruined or almost ruined the careers of these actors?

    Nicholson
    DeNiro
    Pacino
    Schwarzenegger
    Stallone
    Willis
    Cruise
    Russell
    Kilmer
    Van Damme
    Seagal
    Costner

I am talking about the real stinkers, not the commercial flops that were arguably decent films or good roles. For example, Tom Hanks has many misfires in his career and at one point 'The Bonfire of Vanities' was named as his biggest fiasco. Well, the film is actually good, but it cost too much and did not found his audience while 'Volunteers' and The Money Pit' didn't lost much money but were real stinkers.

Costner - Waterworld... Laid bare his astonishing egomania and nearly killed him off after a run of films where he was one of the biggest stars around (I've never liked the guy, personally, I don't rate him)

You guys realize none of those roles ruined their careers and all of them are still doing very well.

I thought that was a great movie, and actually an under-rated performance by Bonet.

If anything ruined her career it was probably Lenny Kravitz and being difficult to work with.

Most actors, it wasn't really any single role, they just sort of morphed into lower tier movies when they fell out of favor for whatever reason, or just started losing roles to younger actors and had to grab whatever they could.

I am going to agree with Godfather though. Panchy's list basically sabotages the premise of his own thread.

More to the spirit of the thread I think:

Klinton Spilsbury - "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger"

Bo Derek - "Bolero" (probably the point that people realized that simply being every teenagers fuck fantasy, doesn't make you a movie star)

Taimak wanted The Last Dragon to be a trilogy. They only offered him a sequel. He turned it down and didn't do crap afterward.

    This isnt true.

Rupert Hitzig a producer for the Last Dragon, claims that Taimak was offered a sequel, but held out for a three picture deal. He claims Taimak wanted a gurantee for three more pictures, if he agreed to the sequel. The three pictures had nothing to do with The last Dragon or were they connected. THAT being said, Taimak claims Hitzig is wrong and was never in the room when the deal was trying to occur. According to Taimak, the studio tried to bully him into making a sequel and were being shady about money and future projects. And because of that Taimak turned the role down.

Costner took quite a few years to recover from Waterworld, and the Postman didn't help

Even now, he's never reached the status he enjoyed in "Dances With Wolves" days

After waterworld he did Tin Cup and that made over 50 mil at the box office. Than he did Postman which sucked and made no money. But after the post man he did Message in the bottle, which made over 100 mil at the box office. He then went on to make some really good movies after that that got good reviews and did well at the box office. His recent stuff is really good. Mr. Brooks was excellent. Hatfield and the McCoys was fucking great. His new movie 3 days to kill looks pretty good.

Neither do most people when they reached that success. You can only go down after that. But his career currently is getting very good and he is increasingly in demand and his career was far from ruined.

Speed is also the movie that turned both Kenu, and Bullock into stars.

Might have a point there. It's definitely the movie that turned Bullock into a star though.

Wesley Snipes - New Jack City.

I guess you could also make an argument for White Men Can't Jump, but overall, Nino Brown will always be his best known character.

White Men Can't Jump is Woody's defining role though. And Rosie Perez's, for whatever that's worth lol.
