It wasn't even close. The scifi action remake of Robocop was shot down by the kid's film Lego Movie second week reign. With $48.8 million the family friendly film easily topped the box office chart with only a mere 29% drop from the previous week. The film has now grossed $129 million domestically and will easily surpass the $200 million mark. Not bad for a $60 million budget film not many people thought will do this well. In a weekend cluttered with 80's remakes, the second spot went to About Last Night a romantic comedy remake of the 1986 movie that starred Rob Lowe & Demi Moore, but this time stars Kevin Hart. Benefiting from the fact that Valentine's Day landed on a Friday, the film did incredibly well on that day as the date movie to go and easily took the second spot with $27 million. With a budget of just $12.5 million the movie is already a runaway hit for its studio. In the third spot and probably burning some circuits among audience members, Robocop failed to even beat the numbers of the last Paul Verhoeven's remake (Total Recall). Its $21.5 million is a big disappointment for the $100 million budget film (the studio was expecting at least a $50 million opening). That said, the international numbers might save the film from being total bomb since after two weeks the film has now a worldwide gross of $96 million, not exactly Iron Man 3 numbers, but still hopeful it might not lose that much money in the following weeks. Monuments Men took the third place with $15 million for a two weeks total of $43 million, not exactly the numbers expected for this $70 million production. The third remake debuting this weekend, Endless Love did not brought the expected numbers on Valentine's weekend. With just $13.3 million gross the only its number can go is down and will quickly fade out of the charts. Ride Along continues doing very well in its fifth week with $8.7 million for a total of $116.1 million. Great numbers for the $25 million production. The bomb of the week title belongs to the ill conceived Winter's Tale which debuted in the 7th spot with $7.7 million. The idea of mixing a romantic story within a scifi canvas felt like a by-the-numbers studio tactic to lure both men & women, but only a few bought the concept while most audiences ignored it and went back to watch the Lego film again. It its 13th week of release Disney's Frozen continues its now slow journey to the $400 million mark. It only dropped 14% from last week and grabbed $5.8 million for a total domestically of $376 million so far. If it wins, as is expected, the Oscar for Best Animated movie and Best Song, that could boost its sales for a few more weeks. The 2013 leftover Lone Survivor added $4.0 million to its $118 million gross in the 9th spot. Finally in the 10th spot That Awkward Moment took some $3.3 million for a total of $21.4 million in its third week. Doesn't look like much, but since the movie cost so cheap ($8 million) to make, it is a hit in its own right.

Thanks for the report panchy. You should post these more often. Hipefully Robocop will do better, so Hollywood invests more in scifi movies.

Yup. Most of these remakes have bombed bad, but unfortunately there are like 50 more remakes in production right now.

There are tons of original scripts. Hollywood just wants guaranteed money.

so basically they really fucked up with the "robo" part of the character :scratcher:
i know why too, they were greedy and wanted to make the character super fast to throw in as much action as possible

in the originals they got this right...i remember that even in Robocop video games he moved around with really heavy feet

Even real robots are more agile than they were in 1987 so i dont see why that is a problem. But that being said, you kind of have to watch the movie. It's not the same Robocop. Due to the laws, they cant have a robot on the street, so they manipulate the law and actually put a person into a robot suit. He still has the same memories and goes home to his family and shit. It's only when they realize he cant be as good as real robots, do they drop his dopamine and practically erase all emotion. And when the visor drops, the suit takes over. It's not even really him doing it, but he thinks he is.

It's actually a quite interesting take on it. But like i said before, it was too quick and it didnt give us enough time to give a shit about him.

True, but this year's Oscar nominations are particularly strong:
    The Wolf Of Wall Street
    Dallas Buyer's Club
    American Hustle
    Gravity
    12 Years A Slave

    All great movies..

naaaah people aren't stupid...they want to see robots acting like robots
whoever heard of a 1 tonne robot dodging bullets..it's ridiculous...the whole point in having a metal suit is to just walk through that shit

this is why the movie flopped

He is actually not as agile as the previews suggest, but he is more agile than 87 robocop. He still walks very robotic, like the original. He runs funny, like a robot. But again, it's a human in a robot. Think of something like this, but more advanced because it's movements are all connected to his brain. Also remember that the movie takes places well after 2020

TALOS the Iron-Man like Army bodysuit is way too cool: it not only protects the body from bullets, but it segregates a healing liquid to any open wound

Yeah but if Robocop and Total Recall have proven that remakes aren't exactly guaranteed money, why won't they stop shoving them down our throats and go back to taking chances? If the problem is the budget stop paying actors so much guaranteed money. Their contracts should be based off of the gross.

They havent proven shit. For every robocop there is ten other remakes making loads of money for the studios. Remakes wont stop. In fact they will become more and more frequent.

Yeah man. I mean lets look at some remakes in 2013 alone.

    Carrie - 85 million
    Evil Dead - 97 Million
The secret life of Walter Smitty - 176 million
    Delivery Man - 51 million
The Lone Ranger - 260 million
Man of Steel - 668 million
    The Great Gatsby- 351 Million

Now lets go into sequels/prequels, which again, is just the same idea with a new twist.

    Hunger Games - 862 Mil
    Iron Man 3 - 1.2 billion
    Despicable Me 2 - 970 Million
    Monsters U - 743 Mil
    The Hobbit - 860 mil
    Fast 6 - 788 Mil
Oz Great and powerful - 493 mil
    Star Trek - 467 mil
    Thor - 639 Mil
    Grown ups 2 - 246 mil
    The Wolverine - 414 Mil
    Anchorman 2 - 169 Mil
    GI Joe 2 - 375 Mil
    Cloudy/Meatballs 2 - 267 Mil

And i could go on. All of this for just 2013 alone. See it's not the studios, it's the audience that goes and see's the movies. Hollywood will never have to put much effort into their movies anymore because the audience eat's up old and used ideas.

I count them. Same ideas with a different twist. Again, no real originality.

All the movies i listed made well above their budgets.
