I parallel Trinidad-Vargas to Chavez-Taylor 1. Vargas and Taylor being the undefeated American champs with the good amateur background, who fought hard-hitting, undefeated Latino champs who won titles in 3 divisions (2 at the time for Tito) and whom had much more experience. Both were classic fights which ended in 12th round TKOs for the more experienced champs.

Both fights took something out of Vargas & Taylor. They had some decent wins and good performances afterwards (more so for Taylor, who had the 2nd best win of his career against Davis). Both of them generally took a lot of punishment in general.

Which of the two fights was better?

Trinidad-Vargas was More Fan Friendly, in REED's Opinion...Had Various Momentum Shifts & BOTH Men Tasted the Canvas...

Chavez-Taylor ENDED More Dramatically, Obviously, but REED Finds Trinidad-Vargas A LOT More Rewatchable...

Taylor and Chavez were way better fighters and their bout was fought at a higher level... plus it was more competitive

Trinidad/Vargas was a tremendous fight and Vargas's courage was remarkable, but the fight was not as dramatic, nor was the skill level as high

Chavez/Taylor was speed/volume vs. economic efficiency... The dazzling speed of Taylor vs. the patient precision of Chavez and there's a dramatic ending, to boot

Chavez/Taylor is one of the defining fights of the last 30 years... I wouldn't say the same of Trinidad/Vargas (thought it was a terrific fight)

There's no wrong answer here. Both were terrific fights, about on the same level. Sure, Chavez was better than Tito and Taylor was better than Vargas, but why does that matter? Corrales & Castillo weren't all time greats, yet they produced the best fight of all time.

Personally, I would agree with REED that Tito-Vargas is more re-watchable, but I have no problem with whoever thinks Chavez-Taylor was better.

"better" and more entertaining are two different things

I voted Chavez-Taylor but if I had to watch one of these tonight it would be Tito-Vargas

Also, Taylor was better than Tito and Vargas

Incidentally, I'm not saying it's a better fight simply because Chavez/Taylor were better fighters, but because they were better fighters fighting at a stiff pace in a fight with lots of action and a dramatic ending

In all honesty, the ending is probably what tips it for Chavez-Taylor.

Minus Chavez coming on for that KO, it just would have been an excellent fight and a clear win for Taylor off a brilliant performance. The dramatic, and controversial ending made the fight legendary.

Tito-Vargas was a dramatic fight as well, and although Tito remained in control through most the fight, Vargas at times turned the tide, and gave his fans reason to believe he was a live dog.

Both are top 5 fights of the last 25 years.

Shit, as matter a fact you could make an argument that they're #2 and #3 in the last 25 years, with Corrales-Castillo being #1.

No way is Tito-Vargas top 5 in the last 25 years. I'm not even sure if it's the second best fight of 2000.

Personally, REED Didn't Find Chavez-Taylor to Be All that Dramatic Or Competitive, UNTIL the Last 4-5 Rounds or So...Taylor was COMFORTABLY Ahead in REED's Opinion, To that Point...Chavez was BEHIND, Undefeated Record in Jeopardy, yet he was Getting Stronger as Taylor Seemed to Be Wilting...THAT Was the Drama of the Fight...

Chavez Did SUBTLE Damage, Particularly to the Body, which Fatigued Taylor & Compromised his Legs, in the Championship Rounds...THEN, Chavez Took Over, Administered an Asswhipping, which Led to the Dramatic Last Second, Hail Mary Stoppage...

It was MOSTLY Taylor Early to Mid, then ALL Chavez Late...1 Momentum Shift, Basically...

Tito-Vargas was MUCH More of a Roller Coaster Ride, in that Realm...

20 Seconds In, Vargas is on the Verge of an Embarrassing Early Doors KO Loss...By the 3rd or 4th, Vargas Seems to have Recovered, to the Point he DROPS Tito in the 5th-6th...From There til about the 9th-10th, it was ANYBODY'S Fight, Then Tito Obviously FINISHED Stronger...

& Let's NOT Pretend Tito & Vargas were DEVOID of Boxing Skill...This WASN'T Gatti-Ward, for Chrissakes...

Until this Thread, REED Never Would've Anticipated a GENUINE Debate Over Which Fight was BETTER...Tito-Vargas All Day, for REED...

Tito vs Vargas and is not even close in my book. The awful stoppage in the Chavez-Taylor fight left such a bad taste in my mouth it ruined the whole bout for me.

I've always thought Tito-Vargas was a little overrated too (again though, it was obviously a brilliant fight) not a patch on Barrera-Morales 1 for example.

    Exactly

It's twelve three minute rounds... not 11 three minute rounds and one two minute and 58 second round

I think Taylor was ahead but I think it gets overstated a bit... The best shots were being landed by Chavez... it was a tightly contested fight, ultimately volume versus crispness

It might get overstated that Taylor was dominating, but it wasn't that close either. Taylor was CLEARLY ahead, even though it wasn't a wipe out.

But shouldn't a bit of reasonable discretion and common sense be used by the ref in a unique case like this, where 2 seconds is left in the fight? In theory I understand what you and Hut are saying, but there were 2 seconds left ffs, of course he could have continued for another 2 seconds

It was a gift to the house fighter and nothing more.

True say, it's just common sense. Chavez probably wouldn't have made it over to the other side of the ring in that time

Um, no it really doesn't. He didn't even look completely done, fighters have been in worse states and been allowed to continue. It was a robbery, plain and simple. If Taylor had been the more popular fighter, I really, really doubt that fight would have been stopped.

yeah, that's the way i see it too. A fight is 36 minutes long and he got his job done in the time.

Although on watching it back I agree with mex now.

Taylor was in better nick than i remember, i think Steele would have let it go if he didn't know there were 2 secs left.
