At this point, I think Paulie is the best fighter commentator there's ever been. Up until Paulie, that title went to Roy, but I think Paulie is better at this than Roy ever was. He's just a BRILLIANT analyst, and breaks fights down perhaps better than anyone who's ever worked a fight. I hope Showtime employs him for MANY years to come, but one day, they need to build a better team around him. Bernstein is shit at this point. Guy hasn't been good since the 90s. And Mauro doesn't know a goddamn thing about boxing.
Agreed, he's an excellent commentator. He's been great in the few shows he's done with Sky, and is the perfect antidote to shitty Jim Watt
I agree with you, Paulie is really good, but my god Bernstein is awful. He hasn't got a fucking clue, not sure why anyone ever thought he was any good.
Andre ward is better than RJJ ever was at commentary. So was srl. Tarver too. RJJ is piss - poor if you ask me. Half the time he doesn't make sense.
I thought Leonard was awful. Roy was insightful and I think his delivery was good. Paulie is the best, though.
Tarver was good, but I don't think he was up there with Paulie abs Jones. Ward is better than Tarver also. Ward just has ZERO personality. NOBODY was as bad as Lewis though. It was mind boggling how horrible Lummox was.
It is surprising really how weak commentators there usually are in boxing telecasts. You would think that the fighters or the coaches who have been around the sport for decades could tell you something more than that body shots can wear you down, throwing left jab from the waist can make the punch more difficult to block but exposes you to counters or that the taller guy will probably fight outside. Yet this crap is what you mostly get to hear. Only very few commentators tell you nuances about feinting with chest for example, or can tell you a fighter is getting tired before everybody sees it. I wonder why that is To the actual topic, I agree Paulie is very good. He doesn't just repeat the most obvious shit (unlike Lennox), has studied the fighters beforehand (unlike Roy), follows what is happening (unlike George), doesn't talk about himself (unlike ROy and Manny) and keeps his sentences short (unlike pretty much everyone, especially Lennox).
They should fire his ass. Let him mature a bit, and comeback in 5 years as PAUL Mallignaggi. I find it unprofessional and extremely silly that this "Paulie" character acts like such a professional on air and then off air it's all side piece this, 12 year old "gangsta" dressrobe that, yo yo and all that bullshit. Grow the fuck up you little feather fisted "man".
This might be the dumbest shit I've heard in awhile. Fire him because he doesn't go by his full birth name? Guess we need to fire Lampley, until he comes back as "James Lampley" and fire Kellerman til he comes back as "Maxwell Kellerman". I could give a flying fuck how many whores Paulie is fucking off air, and Showtime doesn't care either. As long as it doesn't affect his performance as an analyst, nobody cares besides you.
My apologies, Max. Better Showtime employing a womanizer like Paulie, over a drunk (Czyz) and a crack head (Tarver).
This... Doub Hates Roy MORE than You or REED Loves Him... If Roy SAVED a Member of Doub's Family, Doub Would Think that Relative DISGRACED the Family Name... If Doub was Homeless, DYING of Thirst/Malnourishment & Roy Drove Up w/Drinks, Food & a Place to Stay, Doub Would DECLINE the Offer & Tell Roy How LUCKY he Was to Beat WHOlio Gonzalez... REED:hammert:
I don't hate rjj. I'm just objective enough to tell it like it is. RJJ ' s command of English is not on a par with what you'd expect in a professional communicator. If he has insightful thoughts on a fight, it's appears he's not able to articulate them in a consumable form...essentially failing imo to achieve the key objective of any analyst. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt he knows about boxing. His career strongly suggests it. He just can't put his knowledge into words effectively.
Jones was very good. Okay, he talked a bit too much about himself and religion (he randomly threw in something about Donaire's Christian faith or something like that), but overall, he was insightful. Foreman was still the most unintentionally entertaining and funny. Like Magic Johnson's commentary
Roy's Been Commentating Off & On for the BETTER Part of 15-20 YEARS Now, Doub... If HALF of What You Claim is True, WHY Would HBO Keep him Around???...Lennox ISN'T Still Around, is He???... Roy's COUNTRY As Hell & has a THICK Southern Drawl, but he's Able to CONVEY his Boxing Thoughts Well...Roy FORESHADOWS in a Way Other Commentators DON'T... He'll Pinpoint TACTICAL Nuances WHEN they Happen & HOW they'll Impact the Rest of the Fight... If Someone Doesn't Like Roy's ACCENT, Fine...If Someone Thinks Roy GLOATS Tooooo Much for a Commentator, Fine...But to Suggest Roy Jones is Anything But a FINE Commentator, is HATE... REED:hammert:
Tarver's a Better SPEAKER than Roy is, but NOT a Better COMMENTATOR...Tarver's a Better T.V. Personality, but in Terms of Breaking Down a Fight, as It's Playing Out, Roy's BETTER... But Like You Said, Paulie SHITS on Both of Them...LACKING Power, Paulie was FORCED to Take a More SKILLFUL Approach to the Sport...Coupled w/his Effortless CHARISMA & Gift of GAB, that Makes for Excellent Commentary... Hopefully, there's No More Shawn Porter Level Beatings in his Future, Because Paulie Could OWN Commentary for Another 25-30 YEARS... REED:hammert:
My comments on rjj ' s commentating were mostly a response to the idea that until Paulie came along, he was the best. I don't think he was the best before Paulie came along and he certainly isn't now. And it has nothing to do with his accent.
