Let's Go Decade for Decade, from 1980 or So, Listing Boxing's BEST Chins...Hopefully a Consensus Develops... Tex Cobb, Juan LaPorte, Antonio Margarita... ???... REED:dunno:
Yeah he does actually, and he looked smaller than almost all his opponents too. How about Tyson? Perhaps not quite elite class, but he was very hard to hurt with single shots. He only got stopped on accumulation of big, meaty shots.
Yeah, in terms of raw physical ability to absorb shots he probably isn't too far off. Durability isn't just chin imo it's also about style, defense, ability to make adjustments, 'heart' etc. Tyson probably had a better chin than Ali even though Mike was KOd a bunch of times and Ali never was.
If there were classes I suppose I would rate Tyson's chin one level below the elite. The kind of guys like Lamotta, Chuvalo and Cobb where it seemed like you needed Barry Bonds to hit them with a baseball bat to knock them off their feet.
McCall is still the number one chin IMO. I can't remember him ever being close to hurt. He was taking flush, unprotected shots from Lennox Lewis in the middle of a fucking breakdown and barely even flinched
So we have: Chavez Cobb Hagler LaPorte Margarita McCall McCullough Morales Toney Tyson Wilson Anybody MISSING, from the 80's til Now???... REED:hammert:
Amongst ELITE fighters: Hagler, Chavez, Sal Sanchez, McCallum, Hopkins, and Toney. Amongst very good/good fighters: Eubank, Collins, Laporte, Mercer, McCall, McCullough, Jose Luis Lopez.
Its the only fight I have seen of him, but Mohawk Mavrovic showed an inhuman chin against Lennox. LL was one of the hardest hitters ever, and hit Mohawk with all kinds of shots, and Mohawk just kept taking them. James Toney could take a great shot to both the head and body.
Am I alone in thinking that Carl Froch's chin is overrated? He has a very good chin, but people seem to exaggerate how good his chin is and how bad his defense is. I thought Lamon Brewster had a terrific chin. Horrible defense, he took a lot of punishment.
Definitely showed a strong chin against Lennox but outside of that fight he didn't get hit much so it's hard to say
I thought Froch's chin was overrated for a good while - his 'war' against Pascal saw him hit and hurt a lot then Taylor put him down hard. However, it tends to be shots he doesn't see which really hurt him - when he sees the punches coming he takes them very well and, importantly, he always fires back when hurt which prevents most opponents from taking advantage. I think Froch just about deserves his rep as having an excellent chin. As to the thread, my first thoughts for recent British guys were Eubanks, Thompson, McCollough and (tin hat on) Calzaghe. Vitali showed a great chin against the only guy who ever hit him regularly on it, too. Most of the rest have already been mentioned. MTF
That's as much a result of his dreadful defence than anything else. He's only really been hurt a handful of times and never really come close to being stopped. Considering how often the daft cunt has been hit, that's pretty decent. MTF
He hasn't exactly been in with murderer's row in the power department, though... Still I am saying he has a good chin essentially
He's fought pretty much everyone to fight, to be fair to him, though I maintain a proper puncher like Benn would have sparked him as often as not. Froch's chin has been such an issue because the useless bastard gets hit all the time, even against garbage, because he thinks he has elite level reflexes when he is just a farmer and so he gets clipped loads. Among modern fighters, especially those who like him were medal-winning ammys, he has a very good chin. Without it he would have lost a lot more fights. MTF
