Historically, Carlos Monzon is Another Guy REED Deems "Impressively UNIMPRESSIVE"...

Monzon was the first guy that came to mind. I think I even created a thread a while back with a similar theme.

    To a (much) lesser degree:

    Virgil Hill

Modern day example other than Danny Garcia could be Bradley. Doesn't really have anything exceptional about him, but no glaring weaknesses that make him a walkover for a certainly style.

    Why not call the topic:

"Guys whose records prove they are good, but who don't fit the stereo-type of what I think an "impressive" fighter is?"

This is almost harder to do than to be just impressive. Guys that I think of are; Jessie Vargas, ishe Smith and Alonso Gomez but none of those guys are impressive just average.

It was impressive for Nielsen and Campas to have big undefeated records. Neither of them were impressive at all.

Beyond those already mentioned, I'm having a hard time with this because for every name I think of, there's at least one really impressive looking performance

Well, you know...it's all relative. But even allowing for the fact that most the footage exists of of him post-prime his style isn't immediately eye catching, is it?

Doesn't seem to fit the thread... Charles was dominant and technically superb... He wasn't eye-catching like Jersey Joe Walcott or Archie Mo' but he certainly wouldn't be described as steady-but-unspectacular the way someone like Garcia would be

He's not really much more impressive looking than Monzon if at all; if Carlos warrants mention so does Ezzard.

    Can't see that at all

Monzon basically stood up straight and threw jabs and straight rights... not a lot of nuance to his game at all

Charles moved well, threw a lot of different punches, moved his head, etc.

a lot more dynamic than monzon

furthermore, I'm not 100% sure I'd even put Monzon in this thread... He was pretty boring but I don't know that I'd describe him as unimpressive

Garcia fits that label perfectly, I think

He wins his fights, not by a lot and never appears dominant, but he wins

Monzon and Charles had scores of fights where they'd lose a round or two at best

I just took the Q as basically meaning 'guys who are way, way better than they immediately appear to be'.

Garcia and Frock are the best examples so far.

Monzon I don't think is a great example. He was methodical, conservative, almost basic looking.

But doesn't look unimpressive to me, to be honest. He was tall, rangy, and fucking powerful and accurate, with great focus and timing. That is impressive.

It's a bit like saying Foreman is unimpressive. Sure he wasn't the most stylish fighter out there, and was fairly basic looking, but he was pretty fucking impressive in his own way.

Hill's Middle Name is Probably "Meh"...

His Home State (North Dakota) is UNIMPRESSIVE & So was the Bulk of his Career...If You have Trouble Sleeping @ Night, just Say, "Virgil Hill is from North Dakota", a Few Times...

    BORING...

On One Hand, it's VERY Impressive Hill won Silver @ the '84 Olympics, but @ the Same Time, Sweet Pea Whittaker, Mark Breland, Meldrick Taylor, Tyrell Biggs & Others All Won GOLD...Evander Holyfield was Gypped in the Semi's of his Weight Class & Had to Settle for Bronze...

Hill WAS NOT as Impressive as ANY of those Guys, Unfortunately...

It's IMPRESSIVE As Hell, that Hill was THE Best Lightheavy in the World, for Just About a DECADE...Yet, he was DOMINATED by an Undersized Tommy Hearns, Roy Jones & MichalSHITski, in 3 of the 4 Biggest Bouts of his Career...

REED was GENUINELY Impressed by Hill's Title Winning Effort over Leslie Stewart & his Crusierweight Title Winning Effort vs. Fabrice Tiozzo...

But there WEREN'T Many Awe Inspiring Performances in btwn...

Bradley is a good example. No one is going to look at a Bradley fight and go "Wow, this guy is impressive". Yet he is an elite fighter and has competed at the highest level for years, with quite a lot of success.

He is just one of those guys that knows how to fight, even if nothing he does is particularly impressive.

    Hill was polished shit

His comp was fucking awful and a washed-up Thomas Hearns beat the shit out of him... He was not competitive the only two times he faced great fighters (and again, I reiterate, Hearns was great by that point in name only) and was not competitive when he faced a pretty damned good fighter (Michalchzczyshwelsczki) ... He feasted on shite mandatories for years

Vitali. Most of the guys who got in the ring with him, never mind the fans, didn't fancy the guys chances. After the Sanders fight, a contender for British HW Title sat in the studio and said that Vitali has "shown him nothing"..just a lot of "arm punches" and "awkwardness".

I guess that's the thing, those arm punches and awkwardness are a hell of a lot more effective than they look at face value.

Prime Bernard Hopkins was impressive to anyone who knew wtf they were watching, he's a terrible example for this thread

Garcia & Monzon are good examples. Winky Wright.. did a lot of winning with nothing more than a guard & a jab. You could also add Larry Holmes to that list, very basic fighter but very good at what he did.

Then again, Monzon, Holmes, and Wright all had excellent jabs. So really, it was that the rest of their game appeared unimpressive, but they had an impressive attribute that was enough to enable them to win.

There's Vitali, of course. Everything about him is unimpressive. Including his competition.
