Pedro Pena was an up and comer, never got over his first beating.

There was a Russian guy, up and coming cruiser who got wiped out by Enzo Maccarinelli, Alexander Kotlobay.

    Savage ending.

Kotlobay was last seen losing a decision for the WBC Baltic Cruiserweight Title. Nice.

My favourite one is Sergei Lyakhovich being picked by Brewsters people as another nice soft treat. He took Brewsters eye out and ended his little contrived reign.

Virgil Akins doing a job on Vince Martinez. Ironically, you could say that Akins loss to Turner seemed to "Ruin" him too, albeit that it was not a ruinous beating.

Chuck Davey being touted and then wiped out by Kid Gavilan.

A young hyped Joe Lipsey got his shit pushed in quick by Bernard Hopkins

Juan Lazcano was never the same after taking a pounding from JLC

    Vargas-Trinidad is another obvious example

I remember a hyped young boxer from the early 80's, Wilfredo Negron (not to be confused with another boxer of same name), a newyorican who was undefeated with a record of something like 22 wins all via KO who was hailed as the new Wilfredo Gomez since he was not only fighting as a superbantam weight, but was the #1 ranked contender after Gomez vacated the title. Well this kid's managers thought that before going to the title fight he needed to fight in Puerto Rico to create a local fanbase that will root for him. Big mistake. He fought a local scrub that had like 9 defeats in his record and wasn't known as a puncher, but the journeyman systematically took him apart knocking him out in 7 rounds. Negron never recovered from this defeat. He was inactive for more than a year and on his comeback fight was knocked out in 3 rounds. He retired after that. I heard Negron even tried to commit suicide.

Not the same guy. The one on boxrec is Papin Negron from Toa Alta, PR. This other one was from New York.

Why you think every non-title fight from the past might have a link? I'll look in my old newspapers collection to see if I can find something and I'll scan whatever I find on him.

Only the first fight was tough. Jones beat the shit outta Karass in the rematch.

Just seems like Jones is just a fragile chinned guy.

I'm ashamed for thinking he could be a top guy at 147-154.

An otherwise good thread degenerates into a cat-fight over the innate concrete, or lack thereof, in Mike Jones, and the shortcomings of the Boxrec search-engine.

    Tommy Morrison vs Mercer :dunno:

I like the one about Negron...being ruined by a totally unknown dude.

Bobick was ruined by Norton, but people KNEW who Norton was. Duane needed some anti-virus that night

You could say that Fullmer "ruined" Benny Paret...he basically died from injuries incurred in that fight. All Griffith did was finish the job.
