So if a fighter gets knocked down in a round, can he win it even if he can't knock his opponent down or the opponent doesn't get a warning? I don't think the rules say anything specific about this so it is about how you interpret it. What do you think?

Suppose there is a round where fighter A is totally dominant (like PBF-Gatti 6th round) and is winning the round 10-8 without a knockdown but the beaten guy scores a KD in the last seconds. KD is supposed to be one point, so in your opinion does the round score 10-9 for fighter A, 10-10 or does he lose it 9-10? I suppose nobody would rule such round 10-8 for the guy scoring the knockdown, even though a KD often gives a two-point edge if the round is even little bit close.

    Let's hear it

    Yeah, i think he can

Say fighter A gets dropped 10 seconds in... flash knockdown... he gets up, he's alright... he's down a point now

Then he proceeds to spend the rest of the round hammering fighter B, wobbling him all over the place but the guy never goes down so there's no "official" point loss for fighter B ... At worst, that's an even round, IMO

The only way I could see it is if it were a flash knockdown early in a round, and the fighter would have to get up and dish out an unholy asswhupping for the rest of the round. A fighter who didn't have great balance could possibly pull it off if it were a case of something like a glove touching the ground or a slip that was misread by a referee. The closest I can think of was the round that Moorer was winning in Holyfield-Moorer I and then he got dropped briefly. That round was scored 9-9, I think.

Pretty much like the scenario cdogg pointed. Chances are the judges would score it even instead of for the fighter who was knocked down though.

I don't think it can be scored 9-9, since it is a ten point must system. The original idea was that eve when there are warnings one fighter has to get 10 points but that is different now. If there are no warnings, somebody must get a 10. Holy-Moorer can have been 10-10 perhaps

IIRC Joe Louis won a few rounds against Walcott despite getting knocked down, then again the judging in the past was whoever won the round gets one point

I think so. Or at the very least he can certainly score an even round. You score the round to who laid on the most hurt, and a KD is worth a point, imo..

Then what would be the difference between 10-10 and 9-9? Mind you, originally KD is worth a point, it doesn't mean you remove it from the other guy

You cannot score a round 9-9 because of a knockdown. The 10 point must controls.

A knockdown is going to win most rounds 10-8. A round that otherwise would be even or in favor of the knocked down fighter could be 10-9. These happen. At most, that's what the Holy/Moorer round should have been.
A 10-10 round is going to be very rare. A 10-9 round in favor of a fighter who went down is going to be a once-in-a-decade/generation type occurrence. Possible, but barely. I don't know of any examples where I believe it is appropriate, but it can be imagined. The slip at the beginning of a round seems to be the most likely way.

The Holy/Moorer round is not a good example.

I'm almost positive I have seen a 9-8 (for example) score counted in a fight

why would it only apply to penalties meted out by the ref? the word "must" is still apparent

In this case the ruling has been changed from original. With deductions, you still score the round ten points must and then you separately remove one point from one of the fighters. When there is a KD; no points are removed, it adds one

Earlier all rounds were scored ten points must, even if one guy got a deduction. Thus, if one guy won round 10-9 and got penalized, it became 10-10. Now, this has been changed, and the score becomes 9-9.. This is because the point gets removed afterwards

This type of change has not been made with KDs. If there is a KD, there still is a ten point must since no points are actually removed from the scorecards.

For some reason, I think it was scored 9-9. I remember reading about it in Sports Illustrated.

it is 10 point must, a 9-9 or 9-8 is a scoring error by the judge and should not occur bearing a point deduction other than a knock down. For the guy to win a round when he was knocked down he has to knock down the other guy. Usually you hear it very often he lost the round 8-10 although he was winning the round besides the KD. For 10-10 he needs to be pretty dominant.

If a fighter can lose a round without being knocked down, I think in my mind he can win a round after being knocked down, yes. Even without knocking the other fellow down.

I didn't technically see Castillo go down, so indeed a fighter can, Ugo. Indeed he can! :bears:

And Corrales was losing the round 10-7 with a point deduction when he suddenly won it.

    /end thread.
