Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as Napoleon Solo. Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) as Ilya Kuryakin. Directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) and set in the 60s! Yeah, baby, yeah!!! <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-x08iNZ8Mfc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>
Yup. He was Napoleon Solo and David McCallum was Russian partner Ilya Kuryakin. The spy tv series had a successful run from 1964 to 1968 and while many thought it was 'inspired by James Bond', few people knew that Bond author, Ian Fleming, helped in the conception of this show. Fleming created the character of Napoleon Solo whose partner was supposed t be April Dancer (The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.) and the series was supposed to be titled Ian Fleming's Solo.
Simply because he already has played a similar role in the Mission: Impossible franchise also based on a 60's spy tv series.
No, he signed on for the project and then left. Unknown what those reasons are. This doesn't look good anyway. At least to me.
The Man From Uncle Watched it a couple of weeks ago and found it quite entertaining. Director Guy Ritchie did a great job in recreating the 60's atmosphere (fashions, sets, idioms and Cold War espionage). I mean except for a couple of high rush action sequences if this film would have been released in the 60's, no one would have noticed a difference from films of that era. And that is also its weakness: with its feuding protagonists, unstoppable He-Man Russian spy Ilya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) with anger issues & suave former thief turned American spy Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) that are forced to work together and the lack of James Bondian cool gadgets, there wasn't much for audiences to run to the theaters to watch this film, thus its flop status. But it is a good choice for a home video night rental. I mean, the plot is interesting, the characters are engaging, it has a nice WTF plot twist near the end and the editing is 60's groovy cool style! The downer? There will be no sequel. I wish there were plans for another one as the film ends right where the tv series started: with the creation of the team U.N.C.L.E. These characters deserve another shot without the feuding part so we go straight to the forte of the show which was the friendship of these two totally different personalities. 7/10
