Like Quicksilver said in ‘Avengers Age of Ultron’, “Did you see that one coming?” The cloud of dust you saw this weekend wasn’t a scene from Mad Max: Fury Road, no, it was Pitch Perfect 2 blasting off at the box office starting gate and leaving the Mad Max reboot way, way behind. The girl power singers sequel took the top spot at North American box office with a smashing $70.3 million which is more than the first film entire domestic run of $65 million. This is a blockbuster opening for the $29 million budget female centric musical and a great achievement for its female director, actress Elizabeth Banks. The film had a 70% female attendance with over 50% under the age of 25. Franchise familiarity played a key role in the success of this movie.

Apparently that wasn’t the case with Mad Max: Fury Road which unlike its tag line didn’t had a lovely day. Regardless of the almost unanimous glowing reviews, it only scored $44.4 million in the second place. That is bad news for the $150 million budget film which reportedly Warner Bros tossed an additional $50 in advertisement. So we are talking here of Lone Ranger-like colossal flop numbers. The film’s audience was 70% male, 73% under the age 50. In other words, it appealed to the older Mel Gibson Mad Max crowd, but was ignored by younger audiences who had never heard or seen the older films plus all the girls took their boyfriends/husbands to watch ‘Pitch Perfect 2‘. Internationally the film made only $28 million, not enough to think it will eventually will recoup its investment. unless word of mouth start increasing the numbers in the next few weeks (very unlikely). Also being rated ‘R’ didn’t help much, but hey, Fifty Shades of Grey was R rated too and ended its run with $559 million worldwide...of course it was mainly a ‘chick-flick’ so maybe Max needs to be advertised as the feminist film it really is.

In the third spot The Avengers: Age of Ultron ended its two weeks dominance with a ‘mere’ $38.8 million, which is great, but way below what its predecessor accomplished at its third weekend (#1 spot with $55 million). Ultron now has a domestic gross of $372 million while at this same point the first one had $457 million. It is curious how a film like ‘Ultron’ can gross over $1 billion worldwide and still be tagged as a ‘disappointment’ by industry pundits just because it didn’t made the first film’s numbers, which is no small feat since ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ is the third highest grossing film of All Time.

In other Disney news, Cinderella now has a worldwide gross of $529 million on a $95 million budget proving again that films directed toward females are highly profitable (see FROZEN).

Well, yeah, but in reality no one was clamoring for a Mad Max reboot in the first place and probably many think is 'just another 80's remake...like Robocop'.

You think that anyone thought that Pitch Perfect sequel was going to do those numbers against the $200 million WB Mad Max film?

Uh yes. I did not know they were coming out against each other. Pitch perfect is a huge fucking Cult Classic with females. It's one of the few times the girl will decide what movie to watch. This was a dumb mistake.

This might suffer the same fate as Dredd. Except dredd didnt spend 100s of millions, but was still great.

Mad Max was very good. It will have a strong run due to word of mouth.

That didnt work for Dredd. It will probably do well in Bluray. It's time is done. Next week you have Tomorrowland and after that it's San Andreas. I would be shocked if it does well in theaters from this point on.

Yup. Great reviews and word of mouth alone not always translates into box office gold. What hurts Max the most is its inflated investment. Can't blame the studio as they did all they could to sell the movie, but unfortunately it didn't lure the demographics it needed.

I think Mel is too iconic. Too old to play Max, too recognizable to be anybody else.

He didnt have to have a big role. But something that would draw that audience in.

Nah, not even with Gibson in there would have made a difference as this weekend audience was mainly older (70% under age 50) and Mel has not been relevant as an actor for a long time. If any of the younger generation remembers anything about him is for his drunk meltdown racist remarks that practically turned him into a pariah in Tinseltown.

70% under 50 is not older. That is a young crowd. Adding Gibson would have probably gotten the over 50 crowd in. The real issue is going up against pitch perfect. That was the big mistake. This movie should have came out much sooner.

2012 wasnt a flop. The movie made about 770 million dollars worldwide.

Yup. But there is a big difference between 2012 and San Andreas. San Andreas is based of an actual natural disaster. 2012 was some bullshit theory, made by some bullshit people and was thrown together to look like a garbage.

Well, we need to keep in mind that the Mad Max films, as awesome as they are, were never big money makers. The Road Warrior opened #4 on its debut week and finished its run with just $23.6 million. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome opened #2 and finished its run with just $36.2 million. These films became more popular when they were released on video than when it played at theaters. Also they were low budget so they did made money. Fury Road can still recoup its investment if it can hang among the top five for several weeks, but being so expensive that will be though. Just forget about any sequel.
