I disagree with your review. Ex-Machina is brilliant little science fiction film that has more brains behind it than all the big budget crap Hollywood tosses at us every now and then passing as scifi (see Jupiter Ascending, Enders Game, I Robot). The film only has three actors with speaking parts and one with no dialogue. The magic here is in the dialogue and the acting. Kudos to all three of them, but I was particularly impressed with Oscar Isaac's performance as the creator of the A.I. 'AVA'. The A.I. effects while simple were convincing. 8/10

did you guys develop a connection with the robot and the 'romance'? is that what the movie was trying to do? make the viewer bond with the robot?
I never had any sympathy for the nerd or the robot, felt the whole thing was stupid..and felt sorry for the creator guy since he was about to have his robot stolen from him

Nope on both questions. The 'romance' was not the main theme and I you thought that you missed the whole point. The creator choose the nerd guy to obtain new creative responses from his A.I., but his creation outsmarted both of them. This is a cautionary tale of the risks of science playing God as our weaker personality traits can bring disastrous results to ourselves.

how did the robot outsmart the creator? the creator knew it all along
besides, the robot was programmed to escape, and did so..so it solved a puzzle rather than be a free-thinking AI

very very predictable ending...all the movie did was tell a tale where the viewer knew what the next step would be

like what? (apart from some superhero movies)
I like most movies, Ex Machina just isn't good enough...maybe I found it predictable from reading sci fi books :dunno: or was trying to predict what would happen thanks to everyone saying that the ending surprised them..eh shame

An $11 million budget UK indie movie does not fit the 'big-budget' 'Hollywood' tag, you moron. :kick:

That's true that you don't and neither does Panchy. Panchy does however, give damn near every movie he reviews an 8/10.

Because I only bother to watch widely regarded good movies. My days of risking watching movies that could turn out to be turkeys are way behind me now.

My thoughts exactly. A bit too thin to be great but pretty good.

Yeah I rate it in the 7/7.5 range too. Meaning very much worth the watch.

I took the meaning as being a redefinition of the Turing test- that the true test is when the AI will kill for personal gain.

The plot was a bit thin, but very focused and compelling. I found Isaac's character to be very inconsistent, alot of questions left on his part more than anything.
