Jurassic dominion continues, while Disney scores big

In yet again another weekend that proved ALL predictions wrong, the supposedly ‘easy win’ of Universal’s Jurassic World was met by a better than expected performance by Disney/Pixar Inside Out and it turned into a tight race, but at the end the Amblin dinosaurs claimed its meal as it chomped the #1 spot for a second best all time second best weekend ever with $102 million, nearly tying Marvel’s The Avengers $103.7 million 2nd week record. But when the final numbers are tallied tomorrow, we might have a new record. Also by tomorrow the dino pic will reach over $400 million on domestic take, the fastest one ever (11 days).

On the other hand the predictions were placing Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ with a $70-$81 million opening due to (a) it being in direct competition with producer Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur film (b) was not a sequel nor based on a popular fairy tale, but an original story (c) it is Father’s Day weekend...dad wants to watch action films not a cute animated Disney movie, right? RIGHT?? Well, ‘Inside Out’ proved to be a blockbuster of its own with a whooping $91 million debut. That is the second best opening ever for a Pixar film. Had it been opening against any other film not titled ‘Jurassic Something’ it would have easily claimed the top spot AND higher BO numbers. With an impressive 98% fresh on rottentomatoes the animated film will be making sweet feelings for Disney studio honchos.

In a far distant third place the comedy Spy is holding very well with only a 32% drop from last week and $10.5 million gross for a 3 weeks total of $74.3 million. Holding even better with just a 23% drop from the prior week, Dwayne Johnson’s disaster film San Andreas added $8.2 million to its ark for a current total of $132 million domestically. Worldwide it has grossed so far $414 million which is great news for the Rock.

Debuting less spectacular than expected in the fifth place, Dope didn’t got so high with just $6 million. The studio is hoping the well reviewed film can get good word mouth to eventually show a profit, but with the onslaught of upcoming summer blockbusters that is more a wishful thinking than a likely scenario.

ok genius, was this story a remake, sequel or reboot of a well known fairy tale? If not, then is original.

    Duh.

Like king Solomon said, 'there is nothing new under the sun'. I can mention 10 movies or tv shows for every single movie out with similar thematic. That is as dumb as saying that STAR WARS was a rip-off of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon (sure their influences are there, but a rip-off is just to change the title and character's names and leave everything else the same). Yu can take an historical event or well known mythical tale, give it a spin and is damned original. That Pixar's children movie has a similar theme to a long forgotten sitcom ( I never heard of it before, honestly) is like accusing 'The Incredibles' of being a rip-off of Superman, Flash and Fantastic Four just to name a few.

    Actual numbers were released today:

Jurassic World indeed smashed The Avengers second weekend record with $106.6 million AND also claimed the fastest ever to surpass $400 million domestically (10 days with $402.8 million) PLUS set a new record: fastest film to reach $1 billion worldwide (13 days). This numbers are INSANE!!!

Well Ted is opening, but it looks fucking horrible. So i think Inside out should take it. But Jurassic word of mouth keeps growing.

Yup and they stopped the next attack with Terminator also and Inside out almost beating Jurassic Park. Both with great longevity.
