I know it's fashionable for self professed movie buffs to bash films that achieve huge commercial success and are exceedingly hyped up (like the elitists do in any genre)...so I'd expect most of you to bash Avatar....just because..and say it's a hype job or whatever....

...however...I happen to think that it's one of the best films ever made. It's a true classic. That is an example of exquisite film making on every level.

    What do y'all think?

    Visually incredible.
Other than that, it was an extremely boring Ferngully movie.

LMFFAAOOOOOOOOO @ one of the best movies ever made. I swear you say some of this shit for shock value.

Avatar is a highly forgettable movie, and not even a top 20 movie of the 00s, let alone an all time great movie.

So what? The Magnificent Seven was nothing but The Seven Samurai in the old west. Both co-exist as movie classics.

It being ripped off from Pocahontas has nothing to do with it being a boring, uninspiring movie. It simply was. Visually impressive, but that's literally it.

You are in the minority. The film was well received and got 9 Academy awards nominations including Best Picture winning 3.

"Avatar" was a giant screen movie theater experience film. I thought it was a great experience first time I saw it on the big screen. Doesn't hold up to later viewings on the small screen though. Unless you have a giant 3D Home theater system, it has zero re-watchability to me.

It's gotten much of the same backlash that Cameron's "Titanic" received, but I would rewatch "Titanic" again (even the first half), long before watching "Avatar" again.

It was entertaining to watch on the big screen in 3D.

Exactly. It's a shit movie, with zero memorable scenes / lines / acting in it.

Yet this idiot OP thinks it's great?

You're a madman. Avatar was a classic. Fabulous from start to finish. Tremendous story, pacing, action, script, dialogue, drama...you name it. Excellent.

"Toruk Makto....I will fly with you!"

Doesn't get better than that. I've watched that film at least 5 times already.

Calling Avatar a "shit movie" removes any credibility you may have had left.

There's a reason why it had commercial and critical success.

It's not a "shit" movie, but it has VERY little re-watchability and doesn't resonate with you at all. Pretty uninspiring and mediocre movie if you take away the great visuals.

As was said already, it was worth seeing ONE TIME on an IMAX screen. But I was forced to see it TWICE (about a week apart). First time around I was mildly entertained but said to myself (this is overrated), SECOND time... I wanted to kill myself.

I would NEVER EVER wanna see it a third time. It's just not a quality movie, especially not for multiple viewings.

I was being EXTREMELY generous when I said it wasn't a top 20 movie of the 00s. I think there's easily 50-75 movies made between 2000-2010 that are much better than Avatar.

The Never Ending Story is a better movie than Avatar.

Titanic is not overrated. Not at all. Great film also.

You can't compare it with Avatar, though. Very different.

    Back to Avatar though...

Avatar is great film making on every level. I'm surprised you can't appreciate it. It's not just about teh special effects, it's the story, the screenplay, the character development, the flow, the use of music and sound...everything. Tremendous work of art. Only "weakness" is a lack of STRONG acting...but the acting wasn't bad.

T2 is probably when James Cameron started getting so much into visual effects that the other areas of his movies, like scripts, went downhill. He's laughing all the way to the bank, but his top 2 grossing movies (and the top 2 all-time I think) are not even close to some of his other movies in quality.

I knew nothing about Avatar going into the movie and it was obvious about 30 minutes in exactly how it was going to play out, so I turned my brain off and just enjoyed the visuals so I would enjoy the movie more.

Sly and Panchy are just obsessed with popular, mainstream movies that gross a lot.

They would probably consider Wild Wild West to be better than Unforgiven, because it sold more.

    Nope.

The difference is I'm not a deliberate tiresome non-conformist like you that bashes popular films just because they're popular....in order to make myself look like some expert movie buff. Same tactic used by guys like Bert Sugar in boxing when they rank highly fighters no one has heard about.

I appreciate all types of films: I love some obscure critics pix foreign language shit and I love films like Avatar and Lion King. I'm objective when it comes to films.

Agreed. I thought it was boring. Visually nice but not much substance.
