Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

Brilliant! The best documentary I have ever seen on the making-of any film, in this case a terrible film, considered one of the worst ever, but the original idea & original director's vision was of something way different (and better) than what ended up in the big screen. This documentary keeps you glued to the on-going behind the lens battles, politics, backstabbings, witchcraft (yes, witchcraft!), ego trips, mental breakdowns, careers destroyed, sex, drugs, confusion, and ultimately tragedy (for us & its original director, Richard Stanley of being denied what could have been a tour de force shocking scifi tale, but instead got a turkey, feathers and all).

Anyone that claims to love cinema and is mildly interested on filmmaking must watch this excellent documentary, which serves as a cautionary tale on 'how-not-to-film-a-movie'. If there were any little rewarding things about the final film it was what was left from Stanley's original twisted vision. 9/10

Is a real tragedy that a visionary young filmmaker was so crushed by the Hollywood politics that it destroyed his career and most of all, his mental health. Too bad, that guy could have made so many genre gems. Lost potential.

 

I just watched it. I agree with you. Very good documentary. Stanley comes across as a guy who's intelligent, but far too "out there" to deal with the pressures of consistent movie making. Really, really fuckin weird guy.

Also what to take away from this movie... Marlon Brando had not a fuck to give in the world, and Val Kilmer was an asshole. Pretty glad Kilmer's career fizzled out.

 

I think The Doors and Tombstone are his best two performances.

What a fuckin tard... he deserves to die. Throat cancer is one of the more curable cancers with treatment, it's not a death sentence like pancreatic cancer is. He's committing suicide. Oh well, let him.

GTFOH! Brando was a superb thespian who elevated the art at the beginning of his career. Unfortunately as he grew older, richer and entitled, he realized that he was sought after only because he was Marlon fucking Brando, the best known actor in the world, and from then on he did not gave a shit about his roles, but only how much money he could get paid for just a few days of work.
