The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness This documentary shot during a period of 12 months follows the daily life at Japan's main animation company, Studio Ghibli, which is like Disney Studio in America, and its three main figures: founder animators Hayao Miyazaki 72, Isao Takahata 76 and publicist/CEO Toshio Suzuki 68. These three men and their animation studio had remained sort of like a mystery to everyone as they are mostly reclusive people which rarely will grant access to their production process. Here the filmmakers have almost a 24/7 all access granted to their company and their personal life (well, just Miyazaki since Takahata remains camera shy and works at another location in Japan since he and Miyazaki can't stand each other. It is a fascinating relationship of love/hate and wonderful partnership that has lasted for 50 years). The documentary follows the arduous task of trying to finish Ghibli's last two films: 'The Wind Rises' (Miyazaki)and 'The Tale of Princess Kayuga' (Takahata) with Miyazaki announcing he is retiring after his film is completed which is loosely based on his father's life. One of the last sequences in the film was mindboggling as Miyazaki encourages the camera man recording the documentary to take a panoramic shot outside his work studio window and he explains how many important elements from his classic films he based them on just what he was looking at outside his window. Pure magic. 8/10

Watched this awhile ago with my kid, who hopes to one day work in the animation industry. Was pretty fascinating. Not a lot of time off for anybody when they're working on one of these films.

I was amazed at the work ethic of these elderly animators. With all the money they have made I would have quit decades sooner and let younger animators do all the job.
