I think most of what he introduced to Hoya's repertoire was unnecessary and cumbersome, frankly... With the right type of fighter, he could be good... I prefer Roger as a trainer
He's ok. He tries to turn every fighter he has into a defensive slickster and that doesn't always work.
yup... He was fucking useless with Ricky Hatton, for example Great trainers can train anybody and maximize the fighter's strengths... Futch, Clancy, Georgie Benton, Ray Arcel are four great examples
Roger mayweather and some other guys were laughing at a kid in the gym who said he was training with mayweather Sr because they all seemed to agree he can't train southpaws for shit
Yes but then there is the in-fight aspect. I thought he was giving Oscar good advice in there in the DLH fight, for example. I cannot comment on him the rest of the way but he seemed a good chief-2nd that night.
90% of world class trainers have one receipt and fighting strategy they believe in and try to make their fighters follow it. For that reason choosing the most suitable trainer is more important than choosing the best
I imagine you meant recipe but I agree. A lot of football managers are very similar. They have a certain idea of how the game should be played and try to impose that system regardless of the strengths and weaknesses of the players at their disposal.
True... Angelo Dundee couldn't teach a dog to sit but in the corner, he was great, one of the best ever I don't doubt that Mayweather can be very useful but I'm not sure he should be THE guy in a lot of cases
Agree The only boxing trainer I can think of like that who had a really great career was Manny Steward... with a handful of exceptions, there was always a "Kronk Style" in the mold of Thomas Hearns... Left hand carried low, right hand cocked, attack behind the jab, look to turn over a right hand... To at least some degree, he had all of his guys fight like that and he was great at helping shaky-chinned guys
i actually think floyd senior helped odh. before, it seemed like odh was either highly aggressive, as in the mosley fight, or hyper defensive, as in the trinidad fight. i think floyd helped him develop some middle ground, which is pretty much what he needed against vargas.
There isn't any stand out guy right now, to me... The next Eddie Futch will probably some Russian fellow or something
