There is a new Boss in town. And he has Alec Baldwin's voice! Against many predictions The Boss Baby claimed the top spot at box office with $49.7 million thus ending Disney's box office behemoth Beauty & The Beast two weeks reign, which last week looked like it would remain undisputed for a couple of more weeks. The animated film had a Cinemascore of A- which is very good considering that next weekend will be competing against the Smurfs and another animated film. Beauty and The Beast took $47.5 million in the second spot for a 17 days domestic total of $395 million. It also added $66 million from international screens for a current global total of $877 million...or the equal total amount Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made in its entire run. The Disney live-action remake will easily surpass the $1 billion mark in a couple of weeks, making it the first $billion grosser of the year. In the third and extremely distant spot Ghost in The Shell bombed miserably in its domestic debut with $19 million. This might spell doom for those that were looking forward for Scarlett Johansson to become a big box office star and justify a 'Black Widow' solo film. Not happening now. On the international market it grossed just $40 million for a worldwide total of $59 million which is still not enough to justify its $110 million budget. Power Rangers had a 64% drop from its debut last week and went down to the 4th spot with $14.5 million for a two weeks total of $65 million. On the foreign front it is doing even worst with a total of just $32 million. Don't wait for a sequel. Kong: Skull Island just added $8.8 million to its domestic coffer for a current total of $147 million. Worldwide the film has grossed $477 million which is a good number, but not enough to call it big success (in comparison 2014 Godzilla had a slightly lower budget, but finished its run with $200 million domestically and $529 million globally). Maybe the studio should do their monster mash next and forget about the plans of adding more monsters in the mix.
Well, well, The Boss Baby remained at the top of the box office for its second weekend with $26.3 million followed closely by Beauty and The Beast with $25 million which brings the Disney live action remake to $975 million worldwide and closer to the $1 billion mark. The Boss Baby has a current $89 million domestically, but $190 million worldwide. Smurfs: Lost Village debuted with an unimpressive $14 million while Going in Style debuted in the fourth spot with $12.5 million. Ghost in the Shell continues spiraling down with 60.6% drop or $7.3 million for a current domestic total of $31.5 million. Internationally the film saw a boost from its China opening ($24 million) which brought its worldwide numbers to $124.3 million...not enough to save the shirts of its studio honchos investment. Meanwhile Kong: Skull Island had a small drop of 32.2% taking $5.8 million for a current domestic total of $156 million. Worldwide it has taken $535 million, surpassing the $529 million total of 'Godzilla'.
