Who has it? Robinson? Charles? Leonard? Obviously this is on fighters BEAT, not big names they got battered by. I suppose if they were robbed against another name fighter or fought them really close then it should be taken into consideration, but generally we are going off fighters who they defeated.
If you take overall resume, wins, losses, close fights, guys he might have stood in with when he was older, top guys he fought multiple times, I guess Emile Griffith needs to be considered. Starting in 1960 he doesn't get very many soft touches, considering how many times he fought.
Leonard gets my vote because of the sheer quality of the guys he beat. Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Benitez. It's simply doesn't get better than that. I think it was Mike that pointed out the fact the at the time he beat them, 3 of them were p4p nb1. I think it is unprecedented. I would put Charles at nb 2. His resume is literally a who's who of the era.
We must also consider the condition of the “names” on the beaten resume at the time that they were beaten. For example should terry norris be given credit for meldrick taylor and sugar ray Leonard? A lot of fighters in the past that are being given credit for big names on their resumes...beat some of those big names when the opponent was past prime and or undersized. Beating great or very good fighters in their prime weight and age is where it’s at
I'd give it to Leonard as well, to have just 40 fights and have the names on there that he does is fucking insane.
Leonard beating Hagler, hearns and Benitez is impressive. Duran....sure....but I only give him half marks for that. With Duran, he avenged a loss...a loss he shouldn’t have had....from an older smaller guy and a loss based on his opponent quitting before being hurt and after a reasonably competitive affair. So I don’t count that as one of his big accomplishments. Hagler was 34 (old in those days) and was inactive so I give Leonard a good mark but with an asterisk. Hearns was his best accomplishment. I won’t take anything away from him in that one. Still he only barely scraped by hearns....way behind on points and just stopping him on his feet and hearts looked like he could have continued. Benitez was a good one though as Leonard was ahead on points anyway even though the stoppage was a little suspect. I rate Jones dominant wins over Toney and Hopkins as better wins than any Leonard wins. But that’s just me.
Ezzard Charles, Emile Griffith, Harry Greb (sure we can't see him but for fun take a look at year end top ten lists at middle and light heavy from the late teens to his retirement and the amount of guys on those lists he repeatedly fought and beat -news decisions and officials- is fucking crazy) Any or all of those is the answer
Holyfield was the man. Tyson, Bowe, almost Lennox Lewis (rematch), Moorer, Mercer...and although they were old men having the names of Holmes and Foreman also isn't too shabby. True warrior, that one.
No matter, the Sly One is right. Hopkins and Toney were extremely talented fighters and in the same league as Leonard's victims (at the time Leonard fought them)...and Jones beat them without breaking a sweat.
Hopkins wasn't anywhere near the complete fighter he grew into over the years since the Jones Jr I fight and Toney was struggling with the weight and consequently fought lacklustre...
Yeah in other words I've actually devoted more than 2 minutes time to critically assessing the question and giving a meaningful answer instead of just cheerleading
Armstrongs climb thru the weight classes in a pre-PED era needs examining. I didn't see the Garcia fight but if he wins that then it's probably case closed. Not too many 130lb dudes are going to 155 even today to win a proper middleweight title, and no Sly, Floyds shit doesn't count.
Most accounts of the Garcia bout do seem to favor Armstrong ... he's résumé is quite insane Both their fights are out there on video ... I thought they were both pretty close
Either Leonard, Duran, or Robinson. Not really a wrong answer between the three. Irish is correct also, Armstrong has a legit argument. For heavys... Ali by a mile.
Holy gives him a run for his money, especially when you considet that the secong fight could have been scored a draw
