orrrrale, carnallll just rewatched this, not having seen it since i was a kid. the movie is fantastic trash, with the pacing and depth of a soap opera. particularly bad acting by the guy playing "Milkweed" Miklo, the half-white chicano who eventually becomes boss of the mexican jail gang. several supporting actors in there who became famous later - billy bob thornton, ving rhames, delroy lindo, danny trejo. they must have looked at Miklo and thought, shit, if that guy can get a lead role, I can definitely make it in this acting business.
Awesome movie and it gets better the more you watch it. As bad as Milkweed's acting was, his cousin the painter who became a junkie was probably the best actor in the movie.
I agree. Another underrated prison movie was Against The Wall about the Attica uprising. Anyone see that one? I never hear it mentioned on here.
