I know, I know, Monzon didn't fight at 175, but I've often wondered how he might have done if he made the jump to 175 and took on Foster.
Man, I have a lot of trouble putting any middleweight in there with Foster... middleweights fighting Foster is like Foster fighting heavyweights let me put it this way, if this was 1970 and this matchup was being discussed, I would be betting on Foster by KO in no more than 7 rounds we dont know for sure, because Monzon never fought that heavy, so who knows, maybe he carries the weight well and is still close to what he was a middleweight, but I just can't take that leap of faith, I think Foster evetnually just overwhelms him with his power... the guy hit sooooo fucking hard and Monzon, a guy who loved to use his height would be forced to come to Bob, not a promising scenario
Agreed. Height & range were mighty significant to Monzon's stand-up, jab-&-chop style. It's difficult to say whether he could adapt as the smaller man to the point of beating someone like Foster, but I have my doubts.
Yep. Foster's a nightmare for most guys, but stylewise not great for Monzon as well. It's kind of like Ray Leonard fighting Roy Jones @ 168 or Chavez fighting Duran @ 147. Size is not the only thing Monzon would be giving away.
